A day out in Southampton UK

      May 12, 2024 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We decided to get off the ship in Southampton for a few hours. We checked out a historic Tudor home/museum/garden, walked thru the old village a bit, popped into a bookstore (because we can’t resist one) and we had a great fish and chip lunch. And we got in a nice walk on a very beautiful day.Read more

      Last night in Southampton

      November 23, 2024 in England ⋅ 🌧 59 °F

Partying late with Helene and her family the last night in Southampton. We had a couple drinks at the Red Lion. The oldest pub in town. The floors weren't level. The walls weren't straight, but the atmosphere was joyful, and the company was great!Read more

      Southampton

      August 13, 2024 in England ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Despite Southampton getting a lot of hits during the Battle of Britain in WW2, there are some lovely old bits left. This includes our hotel, which was built in 1820 right into the old town wall. Next to it is the Westgate, through which the army of Henry V marched to the ships bound for Agincourt in 1415. On the other side of the hotel car park, inside the garden of Tudor House Museum are the ruins of a building called „King John‘s Palace“. It wasn‘t a palace and didn‘t belong to the king either. It is in fact a wealthy merchant‘s house which once had direct access to the quayside. After an attack from the French in the 14th century, the city decided to build more fortifications there and made all the merchants block up their quay access.

There are also some more Georgian buildings, for example the Dolphin Hotel where Jane Austen danced. Also the Star Hotel where young Victoria once stayed when she wasn‘t queen yet.

After a visit to Winchester we concluded the day with dinner at the Dancing Man Brewery located inside the gorgeous Wool House and drinks at the Dark Arts Bar.

      Southampton Day 1

      June 22, 2024 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Today I got up and took the Eurostar to London and then on to Southampton (where my boat leaves from!) The train to London was very nice, the one to Southampton not so much. There were no places to put large luggage so I had to stand the whole time, which was fine as it was just over an hour, but it was so hot! No AC, no windows, just hot hot hot! Oh well. One positive of standing by the door is that when it stopped I could get the fresh cool air!

The walk to my hotel from the train station in Southampton was…not the amazing. I did take a walk after I checked in and it was the same. It was fine, but nothing special and it felt really grungy and dirty. I was also looking for some beverages for my boat in case I get seasick, but most of the grocery stores were lacking. They had lots of alcohol or sugar free soda but not much else. I did find a few nice buildings and some fun tiles on the sides of buildings (they were small - maybe 6 inches). Then I had ordered food for dinner that I was looking forward to...and they delivered something else because they were out of what I ordered? It was odd. So not the best first impression of Southampton!

      Southampton und die Titanic

      May 9, 2024 in England ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

      Day 18 - Southampton, England

      October 30, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Southampton today and a sad farewell to Wayne and Karin who are heading home to Newmarket. Busy day on board with staff prepping the ship for the onslaught of new passengers…our steward, Anshul, looked a bit overwhelmed - it looked like we were the only cabin in his row that were staying for the second half of the cruise so he had a lot of work to do. Hopped off the ship and headed into town. We walked by the Mayflower memorial, a memorial to the 1620 pilgrim ships that headed to America. Then we made our way to the Solent Sky as it had been highly recommended by our Aussie friends. It’s a museum dedicated to the history of flying boats and the Spitfire, housing over 20 aircraft from the golden age of aviation. The Solent region was the centre of aviation research and development between 1910 and 1960. Paul enjoyed it, but only managed to take one picture, and had some interesting discussions with one of the volunteers who was impressed with Paul’s knowledge of the airplanes, particularly the engines. We headed back towards the city centre, passing the Church of the Holyrood (known as the church of the sailors) which was erected in 1320, but damaged significantly in 1940. We continued along Blue Anchor Lane, alongside the Tudor house, that in Medieval times, was used to bring up imported goods to the market place and then down by the Southampton town walls. It had been raining on and off all morning so we ducked into the West Quay shopping mall (check out the vending machine for fresh flower arrangements), continuing with my quest to locate one of my favs, The Flying Tiger (glorified Dollar Store) which, I might add, we’ve been successful with in every port so far, except LeHavre. Jacqui, my craftaholic on board, found it today too (I had brought back Santa tissues for the ladies a couple of days ago) and LOVED it…her husband, Malcolm, was less impressed. Stopped in for lunch at Franco Manca where they make their own sourdough pizza crust and source their ingredients from small suppliers across Italy and the UK. Paul ordered a “No Logo Lager” - bit spicy (the pizza, not the Lager), but delicious 😋. Heading back to the ship we popped into Ikea to get out of the rain…same shit, different continent and then into McD’s for a coffee. Dinner and a show (comedian) and then off to bed.Read more

    • Day 5

      Days 4 and 5 Southampton/Bon Voyage

      August 4, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We had a bit of free time on Sunday morning as we weren’t due to board the Nautica until 1 pm. So I went out for another walk early, making it as far as St Mary’s stadium (home of Southampton FC). Typically for a lot of British stadia it is in the middle of an industrial/council housing area but only a 15 minute (if you know where you’re going) walk from the city centre.

Also typically there a few signs pointing you in the general direction and you can often see the place but it takes a series of dead end guesses as to which actual street is the correct one! Anyway several false starts and curse words later, I found it (see attached photo) and took an alternative route back to town.

Following that we did a bit of shopping and took the 3 minute taxi ride to the ship. Boarding was really easy and we were having lunch and a drink within 15 minutes of turning up dockside.

Hotel review.... We stayed at the Premier Inn Westquay. Pros - it’s really close to town, the port and transport routes and it’s pretty cheap. Cons - just about everything else. It has no reception to speak of, the rooms are really basic (no fridge!), and there aren’t too many staff around to do anything.

We are en route to Edinburgh and had a sea day for the first day of the cruise so not much to report or see. Lots of reading, forming of quiz teams, playing of games and lazing around.

Photos attached ..... Southampton FC’s St Mary’s Stadium, Central Hall and the Premier Inn Westquay.

    • Day 9

      Southampton, UK

      July 20, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

After some major delays docking due to an unusually low tide we finally made it off the ship. Our first stop was our hotel for the night, the Travelodge Southampton Central to drop off our suitcases. We then headed to Boots (pretty much the same as Shoppers Drug Mart) to pick up cold medicine for both Jackson and Ruby. I’ve been dealing with a LOT of coughing and nose blowing the last couple days. Now we are at our usual spot, Standing Orders. Jackson is waiting for Sports Direct to open at 9:30am so he can pick up a suitcase, well Ruby and I will be waiting here for him to come back so we can have an early lunch before he has to head back to the ship for work.
Yesterday was our final sea day. Ruby and I were very surprised when the noon announcement woke me up. We had no idea we had slept so long. When Jackson finished work shortly after that we played another game of Pachessi before having yet another nap. We later realized we slept through the Great British Sail along which I was a bit sad about. I was looking forward to taking Ruby to it. We ended up ordering room service for lunch so we could eat with Jackson which meant we didn’t end up leaving our cabin until a bit before our reservation at Sindhu the Indian restaurant for dinner. Ruby really enjoyed it. We then however had to head back to the cabin to pack. We packed until we headed to see DNA an act that made it to the finals on Britain’s Got Talent. I think they were quite good but Ruby was very sceptical of their abilities, not really believing the show.

    • Day 135

      Southampton, UK

      October 19, 2018 in England ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

One final Standing Orders lunch with Jackson. Followed by some very much needed shopping before the long trans-Atlantic crossing to the Caribbean. One of the benefits of being assistant manager with our new manager Harry is he just gives me a list of things to do and doesn’t care when i do it. So I worked in the morning so I could get off in the afternoon with Jackson when he finished work.Read more
