      St Martin-in-the-Fields

      August 18, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

This was the pinnacle of our holiday: the booked event I had been anticipating the most - A classical concert in the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields 🤩

I have always loved the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields. Loads of my first records were performed by them. They used original instruments and had a really intimate chamber feel to their art. Tonight's musicians were not 'the Academy' but the venue was still very appealing to me.

It did not disappoint! Such a beautiful church. The gilt ornamentation glittered in the (fake) candle light. The acoustics were wonderful. It was as expected a very intimate group of musicians: a conductor, 1 bass, 2 cellists, 2 violas and 4 violins, plus 1 piano obviously!

And the music 🥰. The chamber works were at a sprightly pace, and the pianist played very expressively. It was all repertoire we know well, but every one of them reminded me of everybody I love. Ian & I walked down the aisle to Bach's Air; Elizabeth & I play Eine Kleine as a piano duet; Jen introduced me to Mozart piano concertos; Moonlight Sonata reminds me of my sweet Jeremy (I played it to calm my nerves the night before I was induced to give him birth, and it is one of the few pieces he plays); Pachelbel reminds me of my unique Emily (who once accidentally played this in D flat major!); the violins reminded me of my lovely mother, and the pizzicato bass reminded me of my Dad pom pomming as he listened. I spent most of the concert with happy tears.

He played Chopin's Fantaisie Impromptu as an encore!

We went to and from in a black cab as Ian is over the Tube, so it was a very special evening. The Tower Bridge was lit up when we got back.

      Facetime

      September 7, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

This morning we were scheduled to do a ”Secret London” walking tour of markets and graffiti, but it was cancelled at the last minute - not happy Jan! So, as we had a totally free day, we decided to head off to the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery, located not far away on one end of Trafalgar Square, which was very crowded.

The National Portrait Gallery was fabulous - they had a display of the entrants to the BP Portrait Awards - some were amazing. We then wandered around the remainder of the Gallery seeing a range of portraits from 14th or 15th century onwards, up to modern times. Many portraits of the royals - they really weren’t a very attractive lot back in the day. We saw portraits of famous explorers, writers, poets, scientists and leaders, which were interesting. There were also much more recent ones of rock stars, actors and political activists. Definitely worth a visit.

      Getting there

      August 27, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

We're packed and loaded. Got to the airport and said goodbye to our crying grandaughters. They wanted to go with us so badly. And then we were delayed in Denver by two hours to 10pm. But, at last we are in London now. Adam and Carrie met us at the underground station, and we made our way to the AbnB. We will be here for the next 2 days before heading north to Scotland.

5 years ago in a cold December, Kim and I were here. It's quite nice here now with temps in the mid-60s. Exploration of the city starts tomorrow. But for this afternoon, we had a Sunday roast dinner (a long-time tradition in London to have roast on Sunday) at one of the pubs nearby. They serve roasted beef, chicken, or pork. It was very good and sure beats that terrible airplane food.

After dinner, we noticed all these people sitting on Primrose Hill. At the top was a lovely view of London at sunset in the cool evening air. Off to a good start with day 1. It's time now to catch up on our sleep.
