      Rowington Warwickshire

      July 26, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

Such a peaceful place to recharge: why we wanted to come here. This is our chalet in a truly beautiful part of the country. The lane only fits one car at a time, and we've had to reverse a bit to let another car pass. I love the old wonky buildings. Everything is so old here!Read more

      Kenilworth Castle

      July 29, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

There was a Legendary Joust at Kenilworth castle. It exceeded my expectations! We had a lovely time, with glorious weather. While we always enjoy Gumeracha Medieval fair, there's something different about having a fair in real castle grounds. We saw HEMA fighting demos, falconry, calligraphy (the chap made his own quill while we watched) and of course the jousting. This was really well done. The horses were great and everyone looked the part.
The castle grounds are quite vast. The old stables are the only part not in ruins and are used as the Cafe. The Elizabethan gardens were very grand and were a peaceful place to sit. I am now happy to have my feet up.

      Scrum down - Ball out

      June 1, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

I'm on hallowed ground, instructions are you look at OBS ( Old Big School) where it all happened and Webb- Ellis picked up the ball and ran. Yes folks I'm in Rugby where the Brits invented the game but of course we Colonials perfected it 😉.
Rugby is a beautiful town dominated by the school. My friends Jarlath & Jenny Norman sent their son to Rugby school, a private ( or in the UK, public) school.
The history of the school is interesting. In the 1800's the school pupils revolted and there was an armed stand off between pupils and the local militia.
My friend, Jarlath , his father was head caretaker at the school and Jarlath as a child can remember helping his father mow the lawns.
My Great Uncle, Billy Wallace, was one of the first All Blacks, and he played at Rugby. These were the days when they toured for 6 months and were greeted like hero's on their return.
During my days in Rugby, we drove around the countryside and walked a lot. We saw Guy Fawkes house, built in 1605, where he planned his attack on Parliament. So Rugby has had them all, the good and the bad.
My friend Jarlath is a retired Army Captain, Parachute regiment and last served in Afganistan. Jarlath and I also worked together in our later jobs and I had Jenny work in my team.
Today, Sunday, we had a classic British pub lunch. It was delicious and not badly priced. I had a "warm beer" to wash down the Sunday roast. Afterwards we strolled back to Jarlath & Jenny's.
Tomorrow, I'm off to Tamworth to meet Dave and Bev and then travel by car to Cheltenham.

      manchmal muß eine Frau…

      July 17, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

… tun, was eine Frau tun muß😇

Aber, um es kurz zu machen: „it’s like 10.000 spoons when all you need is a fork. Isn‘t it ironic“ Soviel dazu😵‍💫

      Snowshill Manor, Gloucestershire

      October 11, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Den deutschen Text findest du unten!

"We didn't manage to get up at 7 AM, but it was 8 AM when we woke up. We spent the night in a quiet residential area with plenty of parking. Now, we're on our way to Snowshill Manor, where a country house full of curiosities awaits us. There are also gardens there.

Today, it's cloudy but warm. We made a short stop in Oxford, and Rupert bought us some bread.

Yesterday, we had to refuel, and we paid €1.90 for diesel.

Peppi now naps securely in the alcove during the drive. Cleo didn't want to stay there and jumped down over the safety net.

      About Snowshill Manor:
Charles Wade (d. 1956) was a wealthy collector of handmade items from around the world, which he displayed thematically in his large country house. He lived in a small outbuilding himself. He was also an artist, architect, and craftsman, working on the house and garden.

After that, we drove to Birmingham to meet Charles and had dinner with him. It was a short but intense reunion, and we found a place to park for the night near Mary and Gibb's house.

It was so noisy there for hours that Rupert left at 5:30 AM. I got to stay in bed with the dogs."

      Chipping Campden (and nearby)

      April 2, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

It was a long hike in from Moreton-in-Marsh (nearest train station, and the buses don't run here on Sundays), and it was at least 2/3 uphill 🙃 But the countryside is absolutely gorgeous and the villages are so quaint that it's painful 😂 Others featured besides Chipping are Blockley and Broad Campden.Read more

Cotswold Organic Farm and Bake Off!

      June 21, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We toured a magnificent dairy and produce farm, which holds a grocer with its products, restaurant and cookery school. We learned how to make a few pastries and had a bake off! I give Scott the win, though all of them were delicious. Forgiving recipe I think. Then a quick walk through Bourton on the Water. A picturesque village in Cotswold.Read more

To Be Or Not To Be

      August 10, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Read more

      Stratford-upon-Avon

      May 5, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Suzie - We had the most fabulous day today with Mez, Shannon and JJ in the beautiful village/town of Stratford-upon-Avon. This is my second visit to this beautiful area and to see Mez, (who is one of the best friends I have in the world) this time we met her amazingly fabulous family who welcomed us with open arms 💜💜💜 I miss you already fam, until next time 💜💜💜💜

We started today with a tube from Bayswater to Paddington, then Paddington to Edgeware Road, then Edgeware Road to London Marylebone, then national rail train train from London Marylebone to Leamington Spa then Leamington Spa to Stratford-upon-Avon. Wow!! 😀😀😀 Luckily I love travelling by train!!

We met Mez and Shannon at the station and then walked from the station into town to see the sights. Then we found this coffee shop with massive scones even I couldn't conquer (unusual I know!!), stayed and chatted and then continued on our way. We turned the corner and there on the green was an old carousel!! Cue much excitement from Suzie!! Of course I was going to ride it, so Shannon and I got on and it was fantastic fun!!

We then went to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and walked to Holy Trinity Church. On the way, we got caught in a proper English thunderstorm and huddled under the massive canopy of trees near the church. Then we sought sanctuary in the Church from the rain. It's so beautiful. I love stained glass windows and these were amazing.

The rain stopped and we went out into the cool air. So refreshing! We walked to the River Avon and got on a boat that went up and down the river, on the way meeting JJ who had finished school for the day. The river boat ride was very tranquil and peaceful. Thankfully there wasn't any more rain!!

After the boat ride, we went to the Black Swan/Dirty Duck which is across the road from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre for a drink before we headed back to the station to come back to London. Cue many tears. I miss you already Mez, Shannon and JJ!! I'll be back 💜💜💜💜

      Macdonald Alviston Manor: An Update

      September 9, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

As I have mentioned previously, the weather here has been just horrible hot.
Having said that, we were getting settled in our room and David remarked that the room was cooking. It is supposed to be aircon'd but it didn't appear to be working, nor was Dan's room as his room was next door.

We popped to the downstairs bar and David went to let the manager know the aircon wasn't working in either room. David had managed to get us new rooms with working aircon AND they are both in the 16th century part of the manor house.

Our room is in the coach house and Dan has his in the manor itself but he isn't next door anymore (I don't think that bothers him at all).

So my disappointment has turned to excitement and happiness- YAY!
