    • Day 32

      Winchester

      June 14, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Last evening we had a nice dinner at the Renegade Brewery near to Compton. It was lovely to have Jane's dear 100-year-old father join us and I enjoyed my first-ever Strawberry cider. It has been great to renew our 40-year-old friendship with Tony & Jane and it is always sad to leave. It was an easy drive down to Winchester this morning although there are a lot of trucks on the roads - like Northern Italy! We found our lodgings in Hyde Street, and it feels like we are in a basement although at the moment we are grateful for the cooler retreat from outside as once again it is hot and our hay fever is playing up! It was great walking around Winchester - it's a good sized English town and the Cathedral is great - steeped in history. We paid 10 pounds to get in but enjoyed a 1.5-hour in-depth tour with an informative guide. It has a history going back to Saxon times with several bishops buried there from important times like the signing of the magna carta. The stained leadlight windows were huge and put together again after the roundheads smashed it all during the English civil war. Gothic arches were prominent as were several chantry chapels. Jane Austen is buried here as she died in Winchester. The 'screen' was full of historic statues - most impressive all round. Afterwards, we shared a healthy halloumi salad and then walked around seeing the City Mill, a lovely canal flowing through Winchester, the posh schools, and so on. The only thing we didn't like is the ongoing heat and hay fever!!Read more

      A Cathedral, and a Castle

      August 7, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

What a lovely part of the world! The southern part of the UK at this time of year, and especially after all the rain in July, is very green and scenic. Helen took us for several drives through the beautiful countryside, very rural but very pretty. The famous Goodwood polo fields are close by with lots of polo games taking place. It was the first time we had attended a polo game and were surprised when we were told that in 4 x 7 min quarters it was not uncommon for riders to use up to 6 different horses!! Definitely a rich man’s sport! It was somewhat intimidating for the horses to be at full gallop chasing the small white ball heading directly towards the spectator crowd near the edge of the field and just before the crowd ducked for cover the horses would be pulled up at the last minute. It’s no wonder the horses are changed so often!
Goodwood of course is also famous for its historic car racing track, but this was not operating during our visit.
We visited the city of Winchester, home of the Cathedral immortalised by The New Vaudeville Band in 1966, and looked around the huge building. And of course Carolina and Helen went off shopping while Peter was left alone to split his time between any comfortable coffee shop he could find and being bored out of his brain.
At nights we all caught up the latest and funny Jeremy Clarkson series called The Farm, all about his farming endeavours on his 1000 acre farm in The Cotswolds. In the mornings we would wake up and look outside the window and watch for the deer that come in from the woods in the Commons nearby.
These days were very enjoyable relaxing with friends while seeing some of sights of southern England.
On our last day in this area John and Helen took us to the medieval town of Arundel and the castle. A very relaxing day with them including lunch.

      Winchester Cathedral

      May 25, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Jhd.
      Es war die Parkplatzsuche wert.

    • Day 68

      Andover Adventures

      August 14, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

The forecasts looked to be a dreary gray day. A figured the time was best used perusing "charity shops" in our quest to acquire items for the Atjan Wild festival on the Faroe Island.

We started off locally in Whitchurch, but the shop had a very limited selection of items, so we jumped in the car and headed west. Google maps suggested a half dozen shops within a short distance of one another around High Street in Andover.

Parking was quite inexpensive and close, and a quick walk brought us to the Salvation Army charity shop. It was pretty tight and cramped, but we managed to find a long sleeve sport top that fit J. We browsed the other nearby shops, but without much success. There was a sporting goods store advertising a killer sale, but they too had limited stock.

After a quick lunch at a grill cheese eatery we headed to the next town over, Basingstoke. The mall and parking complex was pretty disorientating to get around, let alone get in to, but we managed. We meandered through the mall, stopping at a couple sporting good stores. We found some success at one shop; hiking boots! The surprise at the end was paying for the parkade 🤯. Then the craziest most convoluted maze to exit to the street.

Happy with our purchases, we headed back to Whitchurch for dinner out with H. The local pub has Pizza Mondays. We enjoyed a pint of beer too in their huge backyard area.

      Whitchurch Waddle

      August 10, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Decided to stay local and explore the area. J found a butcher nearby, so we walked through various neighbourhoods and lanes to get there. Being a much warmer day, and fairly humid from recent rains, we worked up a bit of a sweat. The heavier moist air also trapped the farm animal scents 🐮💩to the point of being beyond pungent the closer we got... 😵

The butcher shop had quite a selection of local meats and cuts, making it challenging for decisiveness. In the end, we chose a variety of sausages, a couple of aged steaks, and a seasoned pack of lamb shanks to enjoy in the coming days. They even had ice cream, perfect for a refreshing snack!

On our return trip we took the local footpath along the river back to Whitchurch. The path was a mix of grazed and cultivated fields and wild tree cover sections. At the start we passed by the 400 year old historic Bere Mill.

We then passed through a park near the elementary school, and a couple of other mills. The old town mill was converted into a residents (https://whitchurchonthames.com/mill.html), and then the functional Silk Mill and museum (https://whitchurchsilkmill.org.uk/)

A quick stop at the grocery store, and we were back at the house to prepare a bbq sausage dinner feast. 🌭

      Highclere Castle

      July 19, 2022 in England ⋅ ☀️ 93 °F

A day at Downton! I felt as if I should continuously pinch myself as I walked towards its doors. I feel immeasurably blessed to have taken such a truly special trip. Thank you Grandma and Dad!

After the day at Downton I drove back to London, returned the car and checked into my hotel room at a Holiday Inn Express at the airport. After a good meal I had a deeply restorative sleep and then walked to my gate the next morning. A perfect end to a rather perfect trip!Read more

      Winchester, part II

      August 13, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

A was very excited to use the sous vide cooker with the beef brisket we purchased yesterday. Sunday morning until Tuesday night should be perfect time for it to do its thing! Once the brisket was seasoned, and vacuum sealed, into the pot of 155F water to cook for the next 56 hours 🍖

Shortly after, we headed to Winchester to meet up with friends whom we met on our Malaga motorcycle tour in June. As the weather was quiet nice, we left a bit early to wander around St Catherine's Hill just southeast of Winchester, near the Itchen River. The path circled up the fairly steep greenery-covered chalk mound. At the top was a corpse of trees and the historical Mizmaze, a rectangular depressed grass mound labyrinthin.

Midafternoon we met up with S, who graciously provided us a private tour of the High street area. Soon after his father G arrived, and we meandered towards The Black Boy pub; apparently a reference relating to King Charles II. The pub is quite eclectic with a variety of weird items and taxidermy animals: giraffe, elephant leg, polar bear head, squirrels, meerkat, warthog, chihuahua....

Their ladies joined us in the evening and we were treated us to a scrumptious dinner at Brasserie Blanc!

      Mottisfort

      August 25, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

      Second stop of the day.
How do you top Jane Austin?

Well Mottisfort Abbey was pretty close.

We found out what Saturday on a Bank Holiday is like. The carpark was a feral jungle and we only got in because Bernadette jumped out of the car and told a woman that was our spot. Check d afterwards and al the tyres and paint work was OK. Go Bern.

House is built on an old abbey and was left in good nick to the National Trust in the 50s.

Great gardens and river runs through the grounds. Usual crowds of kids rolling down grass and lots of small boys picking up stones.

      Had a lovely time.

    • Day 24

      Winchester Town

      August 24, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Decided to continue the “Very Big Churches Tour of England” so headed to Winchester.

Decided to use their Park and Ride as we’d had a look at some of their streets.

Terrific scheme, carparks on periphery, bus to middle of town every 7 minutes and all for £3 for 6 people.

This assumes that you have a local debit card or coins that you have not given away to the barmaif the evening before.

Ah, the Interweb. Eventually it was all doen online and the next time we go it wont take longer than the bus ride.

Winchester is one of the nicest towns we’ve seen. Great Hight Street with fantastic array of old and ancient buildings, buskers, market going on.

Where the Thai ladies cooking the street food came from will ever remain a mystery.

Enormous Guild Hall, couple of Alms Houses, an old type Hospital that still gives out traveller benefits, a working watermill at the bottom end of town and the Cathedral in the back. Nothing not to like.

Bern has voted it “BEST TOWN YET” in capitals.
