Day trip to wee Thirsk.
Joan discovered I was a fan of All Creatures Great and Small, and then she told me James Wight, aka James Herriot, lived in Thirsk, so off we went.

Thirsk is a market town and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England known for its racecourse; quirky yarnbomber displays, and depiction as local author James Herriot's fictional Darrowby.Read more

Drove down to Cottingham, Hull to see Tessa and Frank. Then up to Thirsk Racecourse campsite. On the road for about 4.5 hours in all.
Had an evening stroll into Thirsk and saw a wool shop, then a fabric shop. Yay! Rare in our neck of the woods.
We saw a model of a 1950s Woolshop. Some tiny garments were knitted on size 19 needles!! More like pins!Read more

Thirsk, a Charming Town

Alf and his wife, Joan, were married in St Mary Magdalene Church in 1941.

Thirsk was a market town, and in the central plaza is a clock tower. It replaces a water fountain that had troughs around the bottom for animals, and above them were drinking fountains for people.

In Thirsk there is a group of people who knit and crochet decorations for the town's celebrations, including this knitted model of an airplane for the 100th anniversary of the RAF!Read more

The World of James Herriot

After a morning visit with Jake and Jodie, they left on an excursion to walk with Alpacas in the North Yorkshire Dales, and we went to Thirsk to see "The World of James Herriot" museum. James Herriot is the pen name of James Alfred "Alf" Wight, the veterinarian who wrote several books based on his years of practice. He had wanted to write but was hampered by his long working hours. Finally, challenged by his wife, he began writing at age 50, and his books have been best sellers, spawning movies and TV series. We really enjoyed getting to see the building where he lived and practiced.Read more

Yesterday was rest-a-day. So we spent the day feeling smug whilst watching the rain cascading down through the window.

Our friends Nick and Gemma travelled all the way to North Yorkshire to have lunch with us.....that's real commitment folks!

And watched endless episodes of MASH on TV!Read more

Drove to a park & ride and went into York and the Railway Museum. Met Sarah and walked to her house and chatted and she cooked us a lovely meal. Back at Thirsk again tonight.

Stunning hot n sunny day here at Thirsk Racecourse and after a leisurely morning they amble off to the town centre. He's on a mission today to visit the acclaimed James Herriott Museum being a closet fan of the famous vet books published many year ago. Wots buoyed him up as well is they get a two fer one offer with their Caravan Club card, so at £8.50 for them both it's a bargain. It's also a wonderful interactive place showing both the original home in its past era, and the sets of the BBC studios, very entertaining and herself took lots of photos. A Spoons pint followed the visit and a look at the Thirsk Yarn Bombers which adorn the posts around the market square, then back to the racecourse to soak up the Yorkshire sun.Read more

Well Mutley you're certainly "doing' Yorkshire with more great photos today. Loved Christopher Timothy as James Herriott with Siegfried and Tristan, dad read every book! Great series! Another good day.....not seen any Yorkshire puddings yet? [Fiona]
