      From Camden to Whitechapel

      September 13, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

The weather has at last gone back to being English. It’s much cooler with cloudy skies.

Dan and David went to Camden Markets today. Dan has really been shopping up a storm. He’s been off on his own exploring wherever he thinks there may be something interesting to see or buy. I think he’s going to need a bigger bag to take his stuff home in.

Enzo, Maegan and I stayed home and just wandered around Putney High Street and surrounds. Found ourselves in a nice pub having a nice lunch and a drink.

We got back to our apartment and soon after we got a message from Dan telling us that David got on the train in the Underground and before Dan could get on, the doors closed and the train took off. Separated in the London Underground as it nears peak hour- not to good.

They were heading to Leicester Square so lets hope David doesn’t head back to Dan whilst Dan is on his way to Leicester Square….. Eventually they caught up with each other and kept on shopping.

We had our Jack the Ripper walking tour tonight. A 2 hour tour (not a Gilligan 3 hour tour). It was a really good tour, we walked the streets of Whitechapel and were shown all the significant spots where Jack The Ripper was active. Some of these places are now new building but some of the places are still there and the old building from the 1800’s. The guide was animated, and he was very passionate about his history and he was born and raised and still lives in Whitechapel.

After the tour we went to a pub, “The Hoop and Grapes”, to rest our sore feet and had a yummy dinner before jumping back onto the Tube for our journey back to out Putney flat. When arrived home just before midnight we were so tired that we all got into bed, no showers were had.

The next morning, we discovered that there is no water at all in south London- NONE! Apparently, there is some kind of power issue and the water pumps aren’t working. We are really embracing the baby powder and deodorant today.
I think today we will spend the day north of the Thames in London town where there is water 😆

      Tower of London

      September 5, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

As Ian had not been to the Tower of London before, and it must be over 30 years since I last visited, we decided we would check it out. We walked from our apartment, which was a fair old walk, but allowed us to absorb all our surroundings and enjoy blue sky and sunshine. Entry to the Tower is not cheap, 30.30 GBP per adult, and they call it a “donation”.

We went to the Tower’s Mint, Traitor’s Gate, and The Bloody Tower - where sir Walter Raleigh had a study, and was also the site where King Edward the 5th and Richard of Shrewsbury (12 and 9 years of age) were imprisoned by their uncle ( Richard Duke of Gloucester), and there are rumours they were murdered as they were never seen again. We also saw the Queen’s residence, the Crown Jewels - the ones that were created after Olly Cromwell destroyed the originals in 1649. We also walked up on the Battlements and saw a display on the royal beasts. We also had a great view of Tower Bridge.

There are 150 staff and their families who live within the Tower of London site - comprised of Welsh Guards, Beefeaters and Yeoman Warders. There are six Ravens that live at the site and, along with the Yeoman Warders, are considered the historic guardians of the Tower.

      Tower of London

      September 8, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Read more

      Londres

      September 27, 2019 in England ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Tower of London and our last night

      January 9, 2020 in England ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We weren't quite finished with London yet, and today we went on a tour of the Tower of London. We were shown around by one of the old Yeoman with an impressive uniform and a wry sense of humour.

It was a smashing day - cold, but bright and sunny. Perfect weather for some iconic London shots.

Back at Connaught, I took a last trip to Waitrose for supplies for a farewell meal - negronis, steaks and spuds.

      TOWER OF LONDON

      April 10, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

      Tower of London

      April 21, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 8 °C

Naja, der Tower of London.

      Tower of London

      April 30, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Suzie - We have been sent to the Tower by order of....well, ourselves really!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 This example of Norman (and other dynasties of English royalty) is a sight to behold!

The last time I was here, I was with a tour and it's so wonderful to just meander through the Tower and grounds, instead of being rushed through.

We are having lunch at the moment in the Armouries Cafe and we are about to go to the original Tower, the White Tower, built by William the Conqueror.

Nik - I was expecting a crowd at The Tower of London. I was not, however, expecting the line up to get in to be three quarters of the way around the outer wall.

Having said that though, the line moved quickly and we were soon through the gate.

It's a marvel, how they were able to build such huge, beautiful, enduring buildings way back when with such simple tools. We certainly don't build like that now, even with the technology we have. Do you expect any modern built building to still be standing in 950 years? I sure don't.

I loved seeing the ravens. They are two or three times the size of the crows we have back home. Unfortunately they we're not allowed out of their cages due to an avian flu going around. I would have liked to see them out and about.

We went to see *some* of the crown jewels. Many of them were not on display due the the coronation of King Charles in six days time. We did get to see many of the crowns though. So sparkly.

I found walking on the old cobble stones tricky. They are all uneven and I got the toe of my shoes caught between the stones several times, causing me to stumble.

I loved exploring this old site, trying to visualize it back in the years just after it was built, knowing I was walking in the footsteps of Kings and Queens, being in the room where the two princes were kept, So many stories, so much history.

      Tower Bridge

      April 30, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Suzie - While we were too late to get tickets to go up the Tower Bridge (having too much fun at the Tower!), we did walk over the bridge and back to Tower Hill tube station. It was fabulous and seeing the look on Nik's face 😀😀😀

And we even went down to the banks of the Thames!!! I've wanted to do that for ages!!

Nik - I've obviously seen the bridge in TV many, many times. The pictures don't do it justice. It's simply stunning.
