Dad’s (and Mum’s) final resting place

      August 3, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

      A somber day.
12 years ago Peter’s mum passed away and requested that her ashes be spread in Lake Windermere where she and his Dad spent their honeymoon some 60 years earlier. So Peter and his Dad went to the Lake District and found a very nice quiet location in Lake Windermere that meant something to them and spread Mum’s ashes over the water. At the time Peter made a promise to his Dad to spread his ashes there too when he passed away so his Mum & Dad could be together again forever.
Dad passed away during COVID so today was that day. It was lovely weather and early in the morning that we drove to the same place overlooking the lake and after a few emotional words quietly spread Dad’s ashes in the same water as Mum’s ashes. A very peaceful and meaningful final resting place for Mum & Dad to spend the rest of eternity together.

    • Day 44

      Peter Rabbit Country

      October 6, 2016 in England ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

Today was another of those days where I didn't end up where I'd planned but was happier with the result.

I couldn't get a signal and therefore couldn't find the address of the Beatrix Potter exhibition so I put the address I had on a flyer into the GPS, this turned out to be Hill Top, the first farm Beatrix Potter bought and where she lived for a while. The National Trust owns and runs the property now.

The ticketing was a bit weird, you bought a timed ticket and had to be waiting outside at that time but then you could just wander through at your own leisure. I was fortunate that a coachload was running late, I got a time in which I had to wait just 5 minutes instead of 35, and I avoided the crowds until I was just about to leave.

I then made my way to Bowness on Windermere, via the Windemere ferry. I found the original exhibition I had been looking for. It was more like Beatrix Potter land, they had models of a lot of her books. It was good but seeing Hill Top farm was better.

I had my first ploughman's platter and it included a small pork pie so I could tick both of them off the list.

I spent the afternoon on Lake Windemere going south to Lakeside and then north to Ambleside.

I'm again going to try for an early night, last night as I went to leave the bar I got drawn into a conversation about Brexit and the working man and then spent quite a while researching the peak district so no early night.

      Cruising

      July 15, 2017 in England ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Breakfast was sumptuous! Everything you could want and scrambled eggs and salmon. Yay!
And that was after enjoying the complimentary treats downstairs when we came home after dinner last night - chocolate cake for supper for us. There are also two different types of biscuits and another cake. In our room we also have a container of other biscuits, all home made. Even the danishes at breakfast this morning were home made.
It certainly was not a perfect summers day, but on holiday it is what it is, get on with your sightseeing or miss out.
It rained until about 4.30pm but at least it wasn't heavy.
We walked from our B & B in Windermere to the pier at Bowness on Windermere to take a lake cruise from Bowness, south to Lakeside pier. From there we climbed aboard a carriage of the steam train for the round trip to Haverthwaite through the countryside along the river.
Once back at Lakeside we cruised back to Bowness to catch a cruise to Ambleside. We spent a few hours wandering around a very pretty village that has certainly embraced tourists and started marketing everything they can.
The slate homes and fences in the Lakes District are just amazing wherever you go.
The views on the lake were beautiful ever though a little blurry today through the mist.
Back on the steamer boat to Bowness and once back on land it was time for refreshments and thankfully the rain eased off. Into a bar we went for a mojito and pint. A very busy place but relaxing just chilling, watching the world go by, along with a few hens parties and a buck in baby nappy and bonnet!
Dinner turned out to be italian tonight and was very enjoyable and for a change we had a dry walk home.

Phil - Not a heavy rain, just a misty to light rain most of the day. It did not stop us doing anything, but the boat cruise would have been better with sun.
Interesting that in all of the towns we have been to, there are many notices in shop windows looking for workers. All different positions, waiting, retail, cooks. Yet I have still seen beggars and homeless in the streets, especially Edinburgh. If they cleaned themselves up, they could get a job.
Looking forward to tomorrow, where we hit Liverpool and the Beatles.
