    On Lake Windermere

    June 27, 2018 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Today we travelled on Lake Windermere to Lakeside where we changed boats. After the
Very pleasant boat rides in ideal conditions we had a vintage train ride which took us to Haverthwaite. This was a tourist destination. On the platform there was a guy with his four owls which were chained to their poles, but were tame enough for some people to pat them.
According to information given to us on the train it was supposed to be 150 yards to a lookout. The 150 yards may have been a vertical measurement, and it would not be classified as an easy walk. But the view was excellent. After that feat we treated ourselves to Thunder and Lightening icecreams. By this stage the temp was approaching 30 deg c.
On the return leg via Bowness we saw a large number of swans, geese and other birds waddling around in the shallow water. A bit further on we met a retired pilot who was quite a character. During the day we saw four aircraft doing low runs over Lake Windermere. Keith seemed to know quite a bit about these exercises.
In summary a delightful day with wonderful scenery and weather and good company.

    Windsor Castle

    April 25, 2018 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We arrived at Windsor Castle to discover the Queen had flown in (on her Helicopter) to Windsor earlier that morning. You always know if the Queen is present by the flag. The Union Flag is replaced by the Royal Flag when the Queen is there.

Because the Queen was there, we were unable to tour the state apartments. (It is pretty cool to know that the Queen was basically just on the other side of a wall from me though!) We did get to see the rest though. Unfortunately it's forbidden to take photographs anywhere indoors at Windsor Castle so the only photos you will see are of the outside.

We also got to see Queen Mary's Dollhouse. Super cool. The Dollhouse is huge and has so much detail. It even has running water! I really wish I could show you photos of it.

    St George's Chapel

    April 25, 2018 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

In just a few weeks Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will marry here at this very chapel. This was a beautiful chapel inside and out. The details in the architecture and in the stained glass windows was absolutely stunning. Again, photos are forbidden so I guess you'll have to wait until Harry and Meghan's wedding photos or video are published if you want to see the inside!Read more

    Windsor Castle, England

    September 8, 2017 in the United Kingdom ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Off to visit the Queen, or at least her country residence at Windsor Castle. The Castle grounds and the village of Windsor are beautiful. The green in the photos hasn't been enhanced, it was a very grey day today with occasional rain. We are just starting to see the trees change their colour as autumn is on its way. We also had a great view of the changing of the guards, much better than Buckingham Palace as you are up close. We viewed the State rooms and St George's Chapel.Read more

    Royal Windsor

    December 21, 2016 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

I've had a wonderful couple of days. Riding in the park where Henry VIII hunted deer in the morning, after hours guided tour of the castle in the evening with a spot of shopping and good pub grub in between.

Not a lot of pics as it was raining during the ride and you can't take photos inside the Queen's house.

    Windsor Castle

    January 26, 2017 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ☁️ 32 °F

We journeyed from London to Windsor, the sometime home of the queen. Apparently she spends the winter months at her private residence. It is one of the oldest occupied castles in the world and it shows as it is very well maintained. Tremendous power and wealth was consolidated here which the castle and its content demonstrate. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windsor_CastleRead more

    Windsor Castle

    October 10, 2015 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We met several couples this morning on our tour who had signed up for the Windsor Castle tour, so when our bus got to their hotel we went inside to the Globus office and bought tickets. The castle is right in the middle of a town, which surprised us. We weren't allowed to take pictures inside, which was unfortunate. The opulance and granduer was over the top. The craftmanship in the furniture, walls, ceilings, staircases, etc. are mind boggling. A very fun excursion.Read more

    London, day 4, part 1

    August 10, 2019 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Today was THE earliest start so far. No brekkie, out the door at 6.45am! On the tube heading for the Victoria Coach Centre. We managed to get tickets a couple of days ago for Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and a walking tour of Oxford City. Our guide Sacha was brilliant. She's studied anthropology at Oxford and knows everything.

We left London by bus at 8am. Got to Windsor Castle at 8.45 and waited in line for it to open at 9.30am. We were one of the first in so, as advised, we went straight to the state apartments where early Kings, Queens and guests lived or stayed. Then it was a wander around the grounds. This is the queen's normal residence but her and Phillip are in Scotland for the summer.

At 11am we saw the changing of the guard - very good stuff. Back on the bus at 11.15 and off to Stonehenge.

    St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle

    July 5, 2018 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

These are pictures of St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. Megan and Harry were married here 6 weeks ago. I wish we could have taken pictures of the inside of the church but it was not allowed. We had almost complete and full access to wander around. It's much smaller than it appeared on TV. We were able to walk out through where they walked out to sign the register. We were able to stand where they stood. We were not able to go into the pews where the immediate family sat though. The tombs of many past Kings and Queens are buried inside the church as well.Read more
