      LEJOG day 19

      April 25, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 3 °C

1/3 of the way! Almost a rest day today. 11.6miles 360miles totall
Helen rode the horse this pm and I walked the dogs for a little extra.
Awoke to a beautiful but frosty morning. Blue sky all day. A few lanes initially- a slight relief not to be in mud. Quiet and pretty. Some stunning houses then in to Stafford and on Staffordshire way that we follow for some time. Well labelled and good paths. Finished early- at a shop for an ice cream. This is our last night chez Scott’s. Thanks so much for having me. Ollie will meet us again soon (hopefully!!). Lovely to spend time here, and play Poppywally😊Read more

    • Day 2

London to Chipping Campden, May 31

      May 31, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

So the flight crew just woke us up for breakfast. Early, way too early, but a new day and we saw bright sunshine outside the plane's window. I believe the absolute worst part of international travel is international travel. Hate not being able to stretch out, relax, and get a good night's sleep. Arlene is groggy and so am I. We now sit on a train for a couple of hours so perhaps a snooze or two will help overcome the jet lag.

We touched down at 0804, about 40 minutes late due to a late departure...no water to flush the toilets, so it was a very good delay. More later, and yes, the toilets worked great!

Had some difficulty getting the train tickets, but after asking several helpful folks, we got the tickets and were on our way. Had to change twice, but made it.

At Morton-in-Marsh, we fumbled around trying to get a taxi. Last taxi we called told us that she was at the train station and we should walk around the station to find her. We did and she told us the sights to see and some places to eat while we traveled to Chipping Campden.

At the B&B, we checked in early and got some good advice on where to eat. Eight Bells on Church Street gets my vote. We'll eat there tomorrow evening as we like what's on their menu. Also there is a mini "Olympics " tomorrow night, a local festival with fireworks and all of that so we plan to enjoy it. There is a candle light parade at 10 PM that goes by our B&B so we will have a ring side seat from our bedroom window!

Saw the old market place where they auctioned sheep years ago, and Saint James Church which is the official start of The Cotswold Way. Town is geogous to view with so many yellow sandstone colored buildings. This is a jewel!

We enjoyed dinner at Huxley's. Had an antipasti plate followed by tomato and herb soup, and topped it off with sharing a wonderful sticky toffee pudding. Better than what I remember from two years ago. It is absolutely the best dessert ever! All should try it. When we walked the Westmoreland Way two years ago, we could hardly wait for dinner to enjoy it. At one of our stops, Arlene was given two recipes that we have tried and it is yummy.

Time to close this day and catch up on some missed sleep. Tomorrow, more of Chipping Campden and more pics.

      September 9, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Stage 6 of the Tour of Britain was due to start in Tewksbury today and we were looking forward to seeing the event preparations. However it was cancelled out of respect for the Queen.

Lovely medieval architecture in the town and then an undulating cycle to our overnight stop.

      Distance: 78 km. 660m Ascent

      Homeward Bound

      May 5 in England ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

After checking the mileage for the journey home, we decided to come all the way back in one go instead of stopping overnight. After all, it's no more mileage than when we used to do the shows on Glasgow.

So, on a cloudy misty morning, we start back. Martin drove the first part of the way, and then I took over once we hit the Motorway. He's letting me get some practice in ready for our next trip, we also wanted to see how many miles we could easily drive in a day.

I drove to Shap where Martin took over, not as bad as I thought.

Good trip home, no holdups, back home with a stop and van unpacked in 7hrs 45mins.

A great holiday, shame the weather hadn't been a bit better.

Great holiday, lovely, scenery un coastline. I've bin up mountains un down valleys in countries I've never bin tu before. We've had sunshine, rain, thunderstorms un I've dipped me wheels in snow, well almost. Weem bin tu France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Italy dun just over 2500 miles. I'm knackered but thems ad a great time un that's all that matters. Unny downside to the trip he's gone un lost his wallet on the way hum, don't know where, could be, France, could be security at The Tunnel or the motorway services, she keeps tellin him about them pockets on his shorts, never mind good job it were on the way hum and not on the way out.

      Back Home

      September 29, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Up early and after he checked me all over for clinging migrants we trundle off for the tunnel and an early crossing. Au revoir France, you've been great!
Nice steady run back home, but bugger me the road surface of our motorways are grim and noisy compared to anywhere in France.
Anyway thanks for listening to me and a special thanks to all of you who have bin arsed to comment, you know who you are, it does make our drivel worthwhile compiling.

      Home Sweet Home

      August 10 in England ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Well, we started off early. Well, for them, it was early . Just gone 9 and weem on the road. Plan is to drive till 12.30 und find somewhere to stop for a bite and for himself to watch the Baggies match on the TV. But traffic is moving really well, no holdups anywhere, so we keep going and get home just after one in time for him to watch the second half. They won, so that's a bonus .

We've had a good time and a relaxing time. The Norfolk Broads are lovely and a great holiday.

No pics today, Bertie signing off x

    • Day 5

      Homeward Bound

      October 9, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Waking again to another beautiful day and finding an interloper in the apartment in the form of a huge grasshopper, we set about pack up our belongings and head to the hotel Martin has found for us to store our luggage before departing for the airport, can't leave it at the apartment as new guests are arriving.

We wander down by the river but not much to see here so back to the Bastide, Martin loves saying that word, can't think why.

We are surprised by how quiet it is and noticed quite a few shops are closed, then it dawns on us 'It's Monday ' not a lot happens in France on a Monday.

We decide on lunch in The Plaza and sit down to eat and people watch before heading back to the hotel to pick up the bags. We ask the nice lady if she could phone for a taxi for us. In between our limited French and her slightly better English, followed by a couple of phone calls we find that taxis also do not seem to work on Monday's. Oh no what to do now, Martin is also having no luck with Uber. There is a shuttle bus from the airport to Carcassonne so we ask her about that. She kindly looks it up on the computer and tells us its running and where to catch it, off we go to the bus stop.

By the time the Bus/Coach arrives there are about 15 of us waiting to get on, most seats are already taken and by the time we make the last pickup at the Medieval Town, no seats and people standing all along the gangway, surely not safe but hey ho the only way to get to the airport, thankfully its not far. Plane is on time and after queuing for security and passport control its straight onto the plane and homeward bound,

Good journey back to end a great few days away,. Great place and would highly recommend Carcassonne for a short break. Thanks for the great company Fiona and Mark, now to plan the next one.

    • Day 10

On our way home via Villajoyosa

      January 22, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

Up early ready to vacate the apartment but we have a few hours to kill before we catch the plane.
We drive towards Alicante and stop off as Villajoysa on the way.
A lovely town with beautifully decorated houses in different colours. As folklore would have it, it is so that the fishermen could spot their houses from the sea.
We walked the full length of the prom soaking up the last of the sunshine.
We stopped for lunch and sat outside overlooking the sea whilst we ate an under whelming burger.
Onwards now to the Airport, slight delay in taking off, about an hour, but good flight home and we are now safely enconsed in our familiar surroundings.
A lovely holiday with good weather, nice apartment and a lovely town.
      Would we go again, doubtful.
      Would we recommend it, definitely.
