      Ey up York 👋🏻🏰

      September 19, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

      St.Mary‘s Abby und Greifvögel

      September 21, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

      York

      October 27, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

      York

      August 2, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

It is hard to put today into words ...

It started lying in bed at 7:30am listening to the torrential rain and wondering if we should just stay home. Maybe we should have. If we hadn't prepaid the tickets to Jorvik we would have bailed for sure.

But Ian didn't want to disappoint me, and I was just hoping it would be worth the effort. We had about an hour's drive to a Park and Ride just outside of York (which turned out to be 1.5 hours due to roadworks). Then the 20 minute bus trip turned out to be 30 minutes and we were wedged in like sardines. A ten minute walk in the pouring rain and we made it in time for our 12:20 booking but had to wait 15 minutes in the rain before we could enter. We were so wet! At least my £34 jacket earned its keep. Ian's turned out to be not as waterproof as he thought and he had a wet shirt for the rest of the day.

When we finally got inside, it was so cramped and noisy I started to feel overwhelmed and had to fight the urge to escape. It seemed like a giant queue ... to what? Then I realised we were being ushered onto a carriage, like a very slow roller-coaster carriage. I actually had no idea it was that kind of attraction! It was extremely well done. The centre was built on the original excavation site. The wax figures are very lifelike, but there was one guy who was actually real pretending to be fake. 🤣

Then we headed back into the pouring rain to try and find somewhere dry to sit. We felt like Mary & Joseph trying to find an inn - everyone was full up! We did find a Starbucks which was passable.

We popped into an antiques store and then to York Minster. What an AMAZING edifice! And that organ - wow! I would have loved to hear the choir or organ rehearse, but we were out of luck.

The bus trip back to the Park and Ride was another nightmare trip. I got a seat, but Ian had to stand down the back of the bus. Why is traffic so slow in the rain? It took forever.

So, York: was it worth it? Ask me another day. I think it is a very interesting city, but today it was too crowded and too wet for us to enjoy it. I had a slight stress headache all day. You just can't predict the weather. At least we got there and back safely. Hopefully we don't wake in the morning with a cold.

      War of the roses

      November 30, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 3 °C

We said goodbye to the University of Nottingham this morning and scrapped off the ice on Bartholomew || and headed towards York.

Along we way we encountered our very first snow! There was patches of it dusted around some of the towns we passed by, on the roofs of houses and in gutters where the sun hadn't hit yet. There was even a 5 minute period of the drive where it was falling and hitting the windshield, that was very exciting!

York was a very pretty 'little' city with some very fun streets and markets. My favourite being Shambles, a 14th-century timber-framed structures overhung this landmark road, once home to many butcher shops, but now houses quirky food and nick-nack shops.

After freezing out fingers off eating some (delicious) loaded fries we explored a bit more before heading into a hot chocolate store to warm up the soul and help Bec get feeling back into 2 of her fingers.

Heading back to the car we detoured to see a castle and snack on a chip butty.

We made our way to our accommodation where we relaxed and went to watch The Nun 2, when we realised we hadn't watched the first Nun movie.

      Stockente und Abendstern 🦆🌅

      September 26, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

      The York City Walls

      May 26, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We travelled between Bootham and Monk Bar on the walls and saw a gray squirrel!!

Bootham and Monk Bars are two of the four main entries into the Roman Fortress there have been gates here since AD 71. Bootham Bar is getting some work done underneath it at the minute but it's still my favourite Bar into York. Bar means 'gateway:.

Bootham and Micklegate Bars both displayed the decapitated heads of those executed for treason.

The Walls were built following original Roman walls, built up in the mediaeval period and the Victorians created the walkway.

      The Day of Rest

      September 11, 2022 in England ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Waking up this morning took some time. We did not rush it. In fact, today we did not rush anything.

Having an extra day in York that wasn't on the original itinerary was absolutely liberating. There was no pressure to "do Yorkminster," or "do Jorvik" or "do the Shambles." We could just live.

Moving from a hotel to our Walmgate AirBnB felt like really moving up in the world. The slick white lines and wide open spaces of the AirBnB with its view of a duck-patrolled canal were nothing like the mouldy peach storage box of the Pavilion Hotel. In fact, once we had undergone the tribulations of getting keys and navigating the car park, we realised that we had hit the jackpot with this AirBnB. It is so central, so large, so well appointed in a way that Vauxhall was not.

We went for morning coffee and anything-but-a-Bap in the old part of town. Then came back home for a shower and a nap. We were unconscious for quite some time.

When the evening came, we rushed to Waitrose for some achingly perfect comestibles, then we walked back down into the old part of town for some tapas and beer. I had an Estrella which I learned from the waitress is pronounced "estreya" and that sounds exactly to me like "austraya." Dinner was arancini balls, pomegranate salad, and squid. We toasted to Betty Edser on the anniversary of her death (this is the new meaning of 9/11 for us now) and strolled home.

Tonight we watched the first episode of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power because our AirBnB has all the streaming services available to guests. It was hard to watch because our building is directly facing the student accommodation's windows and I felt like Jimmy Stewart in Rear Window, hurty leg and all. (That makes Stuart Grace Kelly, not Barbara Bel Geddes) When a shirtless guy closed his blinds I was determined to pay attention to the TV, and I'm glad I did because Lord of the Rings is the best looking TV fantasy I've ever seen. And I already loved Morfydd Clark after seeing "Love and Friendship," "The Personal History of David Copperfield" and "Saint Joan," but I'll be damned if she didn't equal Cate Blanchett for superb narration and unmatched pronunciation of the Tolkienian language.

I caught up on some writing while I supped on Fentiman's Rose Lemonade and some white chocolate morsels I bought at Hotel Chocolat in Nottingham. Life is peaceful. And York is being very nice to me indeed.

      York Day 2

      June 20, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

It is raining today, but that didn't stop us. Everyone put on their raincoat and stepped out into the 🌧.

First stop was the JORVIK Viking centre which is a museum that taught us about the Viking history of York around the 10th century. In addition to a collection of artefacts from archaeological digs in the area, it included a ride down a recreated Viking street that showed us what life was like in a Viking village. The mannequins they used were very life-like, in a freaky kind of way.

Next, Annabelle and Dani went off to visit the Harry Potter shop in the Shambles, while Tom and Simon played a round of putt putt golf at the "Hole in Wand" golf centre.

      Diagon Alley

      July 30, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌬 20 °C
