      Erkundung der Isle of Skye

      March 26 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 5 °C

Hier sollen Feen leben. Und genau neben diesen Pools, haben wir Bergkristalle gefunden, welche wir natürlich sofort mitnehmen mussten.Read more

      A walk through Inverness

      March 25 in Scotland ⋅ 🌫 39 °F

We managed a sort of self-guided tour thru part of Inverness this afternoon. We saw the oldest house still standing in Inverness and Leakey’s Bookshop, which was a highlight for me. It’s Scotland’s largest secondhand bookstore and has everything from current day fiction to books over 100 years old (I even saw a few prints that were supposed to be over 300 yrs old)! A wood burning stove situated right in the middle keeps the place warm! It is SO cold today! It feels cold everyday, but our hosts actually said there’s snow in the forecast! We looked up the weather and it says possibly some tonight! 😳😲 We grabbed dinner-food from a grocery, earlier today, and are now back at our little B&B eating, planning and posting!Read more

      Shut up Kate!

      March 25 in Scotland ⋅ 🌫 39 °F

We have named our GPS system Kate. She can be quite insistent with her British accented directions and sometimes is quite wrong! Like today when she basically instructed us to take a right … down some stairs! 😂 Most of the the time we say “why, thank you, Kate.” Or “Will do, Kate”! But there are times that the round-about frustration comes to a head and we just say… “Shut up, Kate!” Then Andrea and I will laugh a little and carry on. 🤣 Today we started off with a very nice breakfast spread provided by our B&B hosts. Max and Angie have taken a liking to us and just before we entered the breakfast room, Angie whispered to us, “I saved you the table by the window. I told everyone you had reservation. Shhhhh” with a wink. 😉 We were both in need of some clean clothes, so finding a laundromat was a priority today. We also were able to visit the site for the Battle of Culloden. A wet marshy moor! Another interesting site we visited, nearby, was the Clava Cairns. Clava Cairns were a sacred burial site thousands of years ago! The burial chambers would have been rocks piled into a sort of igloo shape with one entrance and the entire tomb would have these standing rock slabs set intermittent all around them in a larger circle.Read more

      Headed to the Highlands!

      March 24 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 39 °F

Leaving Stirling today, we headed south a bit to see the “Kelpies”. The Kelpies are a pair of monumental steel horse-heads that stand about 98ft high. They are relatively new sculptures, but are fast gaining notoriety and I can see why! Next was the visitor center for the Battle of Bannockburn. I’m so glad we took the tour which was another major learning experience for me. As I looked out over the beautiful hills and fields, it was hard to imagine the carnage that took place that brought about such a win for the Scott’s freedom. Afterwards we headed north to Pitlochry with a stop at Hettie’s Tea Rooms for lunch and some highly acclaimed tea and cheesecake. My “Rocky’s Rainbow” tea was soooo good! I especially appreciate how dog friendly many places in Scotland are. Made me miss mine, though. While I had plenty of scares at the narrow streets and small parking spaces, Pitlochry was definitely worth it! And, finally, after passing through some beautiful mountains dusted with snow and dotted with sheep, we arrived at Inverness (considered the capitol of the highlands)! We are staying at a darling B&B here for two nights.Read more

      Keep cool and stay LEFT!

      March 23 in Scotland ⋅ 🌙 41 °F

We have left Edinburgh and rented ourselves a car! A nice car! (we basically had no choice). Rentals were ridiculously priced and very low inventory. We will just have to grin and bear it! 😆😉 Driving on the right side of the car, in the left lane, in a country that loves their roundabouts… well, it’s been something!! We had a very quick stop at the Linlithgow Castle (Mary Queen of Scotts was born there). Then we drove to Stirling and will be spending one night here in an inexpensive hotel. The highlight of today was the Stirling Castle, but you’ll have to see the next post for that! I also got a few pics of the Wallace Monument just as sun was setting. Quite a stand out tower against the soft landscape!Read more

Day Seven: The Road Back to Edinburgh

      March 22 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 3 °C

Today was a perfect end to the Highlands tour. I am leaving feeling satisfied. We were going to start with a hike by the three sisters, which we stopped at on our way up. But Scottish weather took over. It was winding like yesterday but so much colder. So, instead, we ended up finding a little waterfall right below the highway. There were 3 falls merging to one, and it was a cool find with the mountain backdrop. It even started hailing out of nowhere for only about 2 minutes. It was so unexpected yet an exciting and random moment to lighten the mood and make the drive so much easier. On the way back, since we didn't hike, we had time to go to a castle ruins as well as the Stirling castle museum. We started with the ruins, which was really our hidden gem of the trip. It was in a picturesque town with classic architecture surrounded by mountains and a massive river with cascades. Then, walking up to the ruins, you could instantly feel the history and memories stored there. It felt so strange seeing a place that stored generations of memories. Turns out that this castle has a dark past. When walking around it, I passed a stone lined hole, and at first, I believed it was just a cellar or something. Turns out it was the execution pit where they decapitated people... There was even a hanging tree. But it did honestly make the experience even better. It was one of the best stops for me. On our way back through the town, we found a burial site that was on an island and just decided to check it out. It was for the McNabbs. Which seemed so familiar, and it was driving me insane where I knew that name from. By the craziest of coincidences, I am related to the McNabbs! What are the odds of that? And we weren't even supposed to go to this town in the first place. It is hard to comprehend how things work out sometimes. Moreover, as soon as we entered the burial site, the clouds cleared, and it stopped rain, to start raining as soon as we left! Then, to finish the drive, I got to tour a castle museum. A chance to hear all the long forgotten stories of the past. It was so interesting to see why things were built and how many times the ownership of the castle changed. Within a span of just under 50 years, the castle was under seige 8 times, which from 1296 to 1299, the castle was retaken each year by the other side. The poor common people! Even crazier there was no water in the castle, so everyone was given one free Scottish ale pint (which is equivalent to 4.5 pints today). It was a great finish to the Highlands for sure. Getting to see all the views, especially from the castle, was mindblowing. Honestly, I won't change a thing about this leg of the trip. It was a great chance to get comfortable with traveling. Thanks, Amanda. While also getting to see everything I would ever want from Scotland. Cheers to this, and I can't wait for portugal!Read more

We got our steps in today, again!

      March 22 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 39 °F

Not to be stopped by the unpredictable weather, we walked….a lot… again today! My feet are going to thank me when we finally leave Edinburgh with a car! So many cool things to see in this city. We finished our day with St Giles Cathedral! Founded in 1124 by King David I, it has been a working church for almost 900 years! In 1559, the church became Protestant with John Knox, the foremost figure of the Scottish Reformation, as its minister. After the Reformation, St Giles' was internally partitioned to serve multiple congregations as well as secular purposes, such as a prison and as a meeting place for the Parliament of Scotland.Read more

      Don’t like the weather?… Wait a minute!

      March 22 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 39 °F

Today’s weather was cRaZy! Woke up to sun, but the day held everything from blinding sun, sideways rain, pelting hail, freezing cold… and back to Sun again. Every 5 minutes It seemed to change. One thing was true ALL day… it was cold! We visited Hollywood Palace today, which has served as the principal royal residence in Scotland since the 16th century! I only have a few pictures because photography is mostly forbidden.Read more

      Last but not least today…

      March 21 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 46 °F

Edinburgh Castle was last on our list today and the skies cleared enough to have some impressive views from this fortress on a rock! From a small well preserved chapel King David built in 1130, to a cannon gifted to King James II that could shoot giant cannon balls 2 miles, to the “Great Hall” (originally built 1488-1513 and restored in 1880s) that still has its original oak ceiling and houses 400 years of weapons and armory… I just kept saying WOW on this tour!Read more
