The theme for today was solemn reflection. We signed up for an Excursion to Pearl harbor. We chose to change our time from the early morning tour to the last one of the day because I had purchased tickets to visit the USS Arizona Memorial which the Viking excursion did not include.
Our tour guide for the bus ride to Pearl Harbor was the best guide we have ever had on any tour. He had a video presentation on the bus's monitors. He was knowledgeable and very easy to understand. I only wish all of our bus rides were this informative and enjoyable.
We arrived at Pearl Harbor around noon and went to see if we could get on the boat to the USS Arizona earlier because if we waited for the time I had reserved, we would miss the bus back to the ship and would have had to catch a cab.
After being told that we should just watch the length of the standby line and that it was a good probability that we could get an earlier boat, we got in line to watch the film about the events of December 7, 1941. The film was outstanding and also very sobering.
While we were watching the film, the weather changed and it started raining. We exited the theater into a tropical rain shower.
As we were seeking shelter so our cameras would not get wet, we saw that the standby line was almost non-existent. So we jumped in line and were immediately ushered into another theater. We were privileged to hear a Park Ranger tell a story about a member of United States Navy and a Japanese bomber pilot who met at Pearl Harbor and reconciled. It was such a an appropriate introduction before we headed to the USS Arizona as we all could have been focused on the atrocities that were perpetrated by the Japanese. We were now focused on forgiveness.
We boarded the boat which would take us to the USS Arizona Memorial By the time we actually arrived at the Memorial, we were drenched. We viewed the USS Arizona from the Memorial and viewed the wall of names of those who lost their lives and were still entombed in the USS Arizona.
One of my great uncles was in the USS Arizona so this was a personally impactful.

Traveler Some friends of ours, whose son is a Marine, we're on the Arizona tour a few years ago. While they were watching the video of the attack, a group of Japanese tourists was cheering. Loudly. Surprisingly, those tourists made it out alive.

Our first LBGTQX

Last night I think we inadvertently stumbled in on our first LBGTQX meeting. We were in bar (shocker) and sat with couple who gave us trick or treat candy (Steve and Bob, both retired teachers). About 6 other couples joined us and we were only heterosexual pair there. Actually had a wonderful time. Very nice people and fun.Read more

Breakfast, hotel checkout, Lyft ride, boarding process, and chilled 'til our stateroom was ready.

We boarded without incident, and hung out until lunch in Windows- the large dining room. I got unpacked while W people-watched.

Walking around the ship brought back some happy memories, and a glimpse at Pride of America, and a last glimpse at Diamond Head.

We got together with our traveling friends- Darla & Rick, and Judy & Glenn for dinner at Silk, the Asian restaurant. I had calamari and orange beef, and Wayne had spring rolls, egg drop soup, and sweet sour pork.

The Restaurant Manager, Manoel stopped by our table. He was aboard Spirit with us when COVID broke out, and we shared some stories of our 3 weeks at sea. A group of women who were also on that cruise had T-shirts made with a picture of them and Manoel. They were behind us in the Teppanyaki Restaurant- and they were having a GOOD time. We decided to forego dessert, and I joined Rick & Darla for the opening night show.Read more

Day 25: Hawaii - Up Before the Sun

We are at port, Pier 2, in Honolulu, Hawaii. We got to bed early - surprisingly I woke up before the sunrise (7:11 A.M.) and my wake up call 5:45 A.M.) . Here are some early morning pictures from the deck of our floating home.

How many times have I been working on a car and lost a tool I just had in my hand only to find I was sitting on it? Countless times. Last night I left my computer bag on the glass table - I wasn’t worried - headed down to guest services they had picked it up for me and held it safely. Viking really does cater to those of us who constantly put something down - and forget where we put it. One of the benefits of being on this Viking cruise is Safety. Maslow’s first stage is “Safety” - we are safe here.

Today, we will do the included excursion - Hawaiian Highlights at 9:30 this morning. Later at 5:00pm we are meeting up with friends of one of my students this evening for dinner at Monkey Pod Kitchen. I hope to have some fun images of our time in Honolulu to share with you.

The ship is quiet - slowly staff are emerging to start their day’s work. I haven’t seen any other early risers this morning. I have the whole Explorer’s lounge to myself. Calming music is playing over the speakers - I will get a cappuccino and wait for the sun to catch up with me. It’s nice to have the house to myself this morning.Read more

Day 25: Wake-up Honolulu

It’s almost sunrise - a bit before 7:00 AM - I climb up one level to deck 9 - the Sports Deck to get an unencumbered view of the city and sunrise. It’s warm out in the 70’s.

The port is jumping to life - you can hear the beeping of trucks and fork lifts as they navigate their way through the docks. Police or emergency vehicle sirens are heard in the distance, the city street traffic is picking up, planes fly directly over head; using the Neptune as a waypoint for their safe landing.

Looking eastward, behind the city skyscrapers and mountains - the morning sun makes way to usher in another day of this fantastic journey. Please enjoy these morning photos; as Honolulu wakes up to another day.Read more
