      Breckenridge, CO

      August 15, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Road trip in the Jeep from Buena Vista to Breckenridge, CO. Lovely drive up the Arkansas river, over mountain passes, passed by lakes and through old mining towns on the way. Some of Breckinridge seemed familiar, but it looks so different in its summer colours. There's so many more buildings since we were here 13 years ago. We rode the 'new' gondola from the parking lot to Peak 8 and which is completely unrecognisable as there's a huge complex there and more going up still. The base is a summer activity centre and was buzzing with people. We had lunch at the Tbar restaurant and then went back down and had a walk up Main Street. Drove up to peak 9 which looked familiar, but eerily quiet as all summer activities are at peak 8. Drive back via Fairplay completed the loop. Great day out.Read more

Breckenridge - 4th of July Parade

      July 4, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Having subway on main road while everyone outside is getting ready for parade. When I walked out the parade had started, not a great experience if you are trying to race. I calmly pushed my bike along next to the parade and took a few photos.Read more

      Breckenridge

      August 6, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

I'm taking a day off at Breckenridge, not because I'm tired. I had a reservation at a hostle and I had to pickup a resupply package. This trail is easier than New England trails. I'm here one day early without pushing at all. I haven't been keeping this up to date, because the trail thusfar hasn't been particularly interesting. The good stuff is ahead. So, 7 days and 100 miles. Just 400 to go. The picture was the other day. I'm at around 10k feet. Reached 11800 two days ago. Rocky Mountain High. Limited cell service so sporadic updates.Read more

      Boxing day

      December 26, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ -2 °C

Today we went skiing through some kids parks and Ollie and I both got some air. Kelly, Rick, Colton, and Kylie left the house today, just after we left for the ski fields.

    • Prospector D1 ... Breck and More

      July 27, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Part II of today's story finds us exploring the area ...

First up, we drove around the loops at Prospector Campground to check out the sites and note our preferences for a future stay. Rimmed as the area is by tall mountains with green-clad slopes, the scenery is nice pretty much everywhere ... the air redolent with the scent of fresh pine .... except when the campfires are burning. Privacy-wise, however, the sites on the outer edge of the loops are the better choice.

Next, we drove down Swan Mountain Road to Frisco, one of several towns in close proximity to Dillon Reservoir. Seeing the construction traffic, we skipped checking out the downtown area. Instead, we crossed the Dillon Reservoir by way of the Dam Road. This gave us a chance to check out the Heaton Bay Campground, which has FHU sites. What surprised us the most about this campground is that none of the sites have water views! And they are fairly close together. That definitely was not the impression we got when we spotted the campground from the overlook on our way back from Carbondale a few weeks ago.

A brief drive into the town of Dillon followed ... then another one into Silverthorne. Seeing the heavy traffic in both towns, we decided to skip any in-depth exploration. It was too early to go back to the Cruiser, however, so we decided to drive up to Breckenridge — aka Breck — instead ... maybe get some ice cream 😉

When we arrived in town, we were pleasantly surprised to find Main Street blocked off to traffic to create a pedestrian way with one side affording restaurants a place to set up tables for al fresco dining. Even better, though there were a number of people out and about, there was no problem social-distancing. And everyone was obeying the MANDATORY requirement for face coverings.

Parking in Breck is inexpensive considering it's a resort town — $1.50 bought us two hours to wander up Main Street; get some expensive but delicious ice cream at Higgles where the ordering counter was set up outside the shop; stop to check out the sculptures and smell the brilliantly colorful flowers hanging from baskets on the light poles; stroll along the Blue River Rec Path while being serenaded by the gurgling water.

It was a perfect late afternoon wander ... until the sun went into hiding and it suddenly cooled down considerably. Add to that an uptick in the number of people finding their way to Main Street. It was time for us to leave.

One of the reasons we opted to test our dry camping set up at Prospector instead of a campground closer to the house is because our friends, Sonia and Boris, are in Breckenridge for a few weeks ... to escape the heat in Denver. On our way back to the car, we called to let them know that we had arrived. After a brief chat, we ended up going over to their place for a bit. We'd last seen them in December 2019, so it was great seeing them again and catching up. We have plans to spend time together in the next couple of days.

It was after 8:00p when we returned to the Cruiser. The solar panels had done a good job of floating the batteries in our absence ... even though we forgot to switch the fridge from electricity to propane. Oooops! Won’t make that mistake again! We ran the generator briefly to use the microwave and warm up our dinner. And now, time to settle down to a quiet night of reading.

P.S. One of the photos in this footprint is of Tom's Baby ... the story associated with the sculpture is here ... https://eenusa.smugmug.com/PhxCrzr/CO-Day-Short….

      Breckenridge

      August 23, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

We took the free shuttle from the ice rink to downtown and ride the gondola to the top of the mountain. There was a storm approaching so we didn't bother with the activities but the alpine coaster looked like fun. Back down for some wondering downtown. Nate found new cargo shorts at the thrift store. We enjoyed DMT (di-mushroom-truffle) vegan pizza with lemon aioli base at Piante!Read more

      Day 17, Breckenridge, Colorado

      August 23, 2013 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Day 17 - We decided to get away to an early start today so that we could get across Kansas to Denver in Colorado and up into the Rockies

Our plan was to get right through to Grand Junction as a full day driving, about 6 hours, but the plan got changed as we saw what we were driving into.

Heading off from Russell took us through the high prairies of Kansas. Continuing west the countryside became a mass of green with crops being grown which were obviously the food bowl of the US. One crop we did not recognise that was abundant was Sorghum, which is a grass when ground up has no gluten, but abundant in iron, and glucose, which makes it a great gluten free alternative for wheat based flours.

Sorghum flour will be something we will look for when we get back home as being gluten free will be a better alternative for breads and baking etc. than normal flour.

As we continued on toward Denver we appeared to be travelling on flat ground but the drive over about 3 hours took us up about 4,500 feet in elevation. If I ever did this run again I think I'd do it in the other direction for a much better fuel economy. Now don't get me started on fuel economy, when we researched these RV's it was advertised that the 6.8L V10 had between 10-12 mpg depending on how you drive it. Well, that could not be further from the truth as we have been averaging around 6.5mpg, considerably less than anticipated. Now that means in dollar terms that our fuel bill is considerably higher than what we budgeted for. Oh well, we just need to get back to the end of our trip now in LA which is now only about 5 days away.

Arriving in Denver it took us 2 hours just to get from one side through to the other before our climb up the ranges into the Rockies. And boy was it a climb, 3 lane highway all the way as some of the big rigs were down to walking pace. The climb is long and steep and seems to go forever, we managed to only drop down to about 40mph (75k) as the big V10 had plenty of clout and had no problem dealing with the climb at all.

The Rockies are absolutely amazing and the feat of building that I-70 highway back in the 50's must have taken some amazing engineering. At one point there is a massive tunnel through the mountain at almost 12,000 feet.

The I-70 was instigated by Dwight D Eisenhower as a means of connecting the East coast to the West coast in one continuous highway. It starts in Washington DC and terminates in San Francisco after connecting to the I-15 from Salt Lake City through Las Vegas. A pretty good damn highway most of the way.

As we reached the ski resorts of Breckinridge, Copper Mountain, and Vail, we chose a park at Breckinridge called the Tiger Run RV park, it was just incredible with more massive Motorhome RV's than we had seen the entire trip. These things were huge, up to 50ft bogey drive coaches with trailer hook-ups, vehicle towing hitches, Harley Davidson racks and more, they were just mind blowing. Our little 34 footer looks like a baby against them.

I think there is a massive amount of retirees in the US that sell up and buy these huge RV's towing Jeeps and Harley Davidson's to spend the rest of their days travelling and experiencing what the US has to offer travellers.

One word of warning when checking in was to not leave anything outside the RV after dark as the bears are still out and about, and get into anything during the night as they move through the park. Now I figured that was just a sales pitch to create a little drama until I had to take some garbage down to the dumpsters at the back end of the park.

In the dark and dropping trash into the dumpsters I was suddenly confronted by this cracking noise of something big moving through the trees behind the dumpsters. Needless to say I retreated rather rapidly back to the safety of the RV, interesting.

Some pretty serious thunderstorms were moving through the mountains now and there was rumour that there may be some snowfalls during the night due to the drop in temperatures.

We got rugged up for a cool night ahead and our continued trip through Colorado tomorrow
