A Warm Shower and Crabs!

Our stay in Bandon was made even more comfortable by another Warmshowers experience. Brian and Nicole not only took the four of us in, but also fed us fresh crab. The only cost was that we had to go and get the crabs out of the trap on the river (and kill and clean them), and wake up very early on a Sunday morning and play with their kids. Oh, and Karl had to wear fairy wings as decided by Olivia, age 7.Read more

101 Oregon Coast part 5

Jetzt fahren wir schon die letzte Etappe entlang der Küste Oregons. Wir starten wieder sehr früh, damit die kleinen Beifahrerinnen die meiste Fahrzeit über noch schlafen können. Wir frühstücken am Cape Perpetua, das mit 800ft. der höchste Punkt an der Küste ist. Dort wandern wir eine kleine Schleife mit spektakulärem Blick und süßen Squirrels. Am Heceta Lighthouse schauen wir Surfern zu und laufen ein Stück am Fluss entlang. Surfen möchten beide Mädchen auch gern können: der Seepferdchen-Plan gewinnt eine ganz neue Dimension.Read more

101 Oregon Coast part 4

Strandtag im Beverly Beach State Park - der war sowas von nötig und er kam genau zum richtigen Zeitpunkt. Der Campground gefällt uns gut: unter großen duftenden Zedern, mit kleinem Flußlauf und direkt am Strand. Somit verbringen wir den Nachmittag komplett am Strand, den man erreicht, indem man unterm 101 hindurchläuft. Aus Treibholz bauen wir eine Piratenfestung, tanken Sonne ohne Ende und kehren erst zum RV zurück, als alle von uns ganz sandverklebte Gesichter haben. Der starke Wind am Meer hat uns zudem ordentlich durchgepustet, sodass wir uns mit großem Appetit zum Abendessen Burger mit allem drum und dran grillen. Selbst genug Muße zum Reisetagebuch-Schreiben finden wir noch, bevor es Zeit fürs Schlafen wird: Happy Camping und so!Read more

Bullards Beach sunset

After leaving Crater Lake, we drove straight through to the coast and set up our tent near Bandon at the Bullard Bay State Park. It was an extremely busy and crowded campsite, but the beach was nearly deserted. We trekked through the forested dunes to a very windy beach just in time to see the sunset. There were some driftwood shelters set up which protected us from the wind. Of course we ended the night with a campfire! Tomorrow, we head back up to Salem.Read more

The weather is definitely cooperating. Clear skies again.

Had a fairly easy ride the first half of the day. Then I took the seven devils road to Bandon. In hindsight I should have realized devil means Hills !!! I am getting so much better at the slow inclines, but the steep hills are impossible!

I stopped and had a tuna melt for lunch in Charleston. Tuna comes right off the boat there. It was good, but maybe covered in mayo and cheese wasn't the best way to go.

I rode almost 48 miles before I stopped for the night at Bullards beach state park. They have a nice hiker/biker campground with a bike repair rack and lockers with a charging station. And showers!!!

After I had everything unloaded and set up I biked the 3 miles to the Coquille river lighthouse to unwind. (Biking without weight is awesome!) For the first time in almost 2 days I got to see the ocean again.
