    Day 8: Road to Carlsbad

    April 9 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Today was a very low key day. We slept in this morning. Enjoyed our last few hours in our presidential suite and lake view. Then we headed to the Village Buttery for an amazing early lunch before hitting the road. They were famous for their buttermilk pie. It did not disappoint! Then we hit the road to Carlsbad, stopping halfway in Roswell. Roswell is famous for it’s alien folklore but doesn’t have a lot going on but was a fun pit stop. When we arrived in Carlsbad we walked around the Living Desert Zoo before turning in early. It’s 90 degrees here!Read more

    Carlsbad

    February 8, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 4 °C

All we did today was drive up to Carlsbad and see the Carlsbad Caverns. It was about a three and a half hour walk through the cavern. Cost about $10/person but worth the price. We decided to buy a park pass for $80 and they took off the price of our Grand Canyon ticket. Now any national park is free. I think we'll get our money's worth out of the pass. If you go to the caverns, don't bring a coat. It's in the mid 50's inside but you're walking up and down so much that you are plenty warm.Read more

    Fortifying ourselves for the caves

    November 11, 2015 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

We stopped at the Blue House Bakery and Cafe in Carlsbad prior to heading out to the caverns. We figured a cup of coffee and a sweet roll would fortify us for the spelunking ahead. But alas... the pastry case was empty! Only one lone croissant left, but that was taken out even as we watched. Oh no! What to do?

Heather noticed that they still had bagels, so we both got chili bagels with cream cheese which came with more chilis to spread on the bagels. Very tasty, warm but not too hot. After finishing the bagels we felt prepared for our adventures at Carlsbad Cavern. But if we had thought about the empty pastry display further, we might have known that today might hold more surprises in store for us.
