      Day 1

      Ankunft in Boston

      Ja gut.
      Flug war furchtbar (direkt nebendran nervige Kinder, ich wurde von der stewardess mit sprite beschüttet und mir ist eine wasserflasche auf den kopf gefallen weil ein sehr beleibter Ami ständig über mir sein Zeug rein und rauskramen musste.
      Nach der Landung 2 1/2 std anstehen für die passkontrolle.
      Dann Gepäck suchen ( und zum glück auch finden) weil die landung schon so lange her war, dass sie das Band freiräumen mussten.
      Dann mussten wir auf den einzigen Geldwechsler im ganzen Umkreis ne halbe std warten.
      Dann sind wir über den halben Parkplatz hin und hergerannt wegen dem Uber. Der dann als Abholplatz ein nahegelegnes Parkhaus ausgewählt hat zu dem wir abenteuerlich über zwei gut befahrene Straßen gerannt sind weil es keinen Fußgängerweg war.
      Dann hat sich der Uberfahrer verfahren und wir standen ewig im Stau.
      Und unsere Unterkunft ist scheinbar eine Art WG... zumindest sind da noch andere Zimmer. Wussten wir vorher auch nicht. Felix fast am verhungern hat aber im Laden noch instant nudeln bekommen... und zum glück ist zumindest heute scheinbar keiner ausser uns im Haus. Jetzt direkt pennen... ich hab noch keine ahnung wie ich morgen zu der konferenz kommen soll....      Read more

      Day 2

      Erster Tag

      August 4, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

      Heute sind wir durch die Zeitverschiebung sehr früh aufgewacht. Zuerst sind wir in die Stadt gefahren mit Bus und Bahn und haben wirklich toll (wenn auch viel zu viel) gefrühstückt. Danach haben wir ein bisschen die Stadt und den Supermarkt erkundet. Um 13 Uhr hatte ich dann mein doctoral consortium bis um 18 Uhr. Bin dann aber nicht mehr zum Social weil ich so platt war und migränartige Kopfschmerzen bekommen hab. Habe aber mehrere Deutsche kennengelernt mit Denen wir mal abends essen bzw was trinken gehen werden. Morgen ist ein 'kurzer' Tag mit nur einem Workshop. Mal schauen was wir danach noch machen.Read more

      Tag 2

      Ich bin in der früh alleine in die Stadt um Vormittags Konferenzbeiträge zu besuchen. Danach bin ich noch in einen süßen Buchladen und hab auf Felix gewartet der wg einem Call im Airbnb geblieben war.
      Die Einkauffsstraße war richtig toll dort. Danach sind wir noch ans Wasser und haben in einem Biergarten sündhaft teures Bier getrunken und dafür ultra luxus dixis kennengelernt. Also wenn amis nur solche dixiklos kennen bekommen sie bei uns einen Kulturschock.
      Als wir eigentlich keine Lust mehr hatten und nach hause fahren wollten haben wir uns auf dem weg noch straßenkünstler angesehen und sind durch North End gelaufen.
      Danach sind wir zum von Felix heiß ersehnten Bbq gegangen und haben dort noch etwas gequizzt, bevor es mit abenteuerlicher manier mit dem bus nach hause ging.
      Hier daheim angekommen ist gerade eine Party im vollen gange, die unser gastgeber gibt, Der direkt nebenan wohnt.
      Wir haben aber abgelehnt und liegen nach einem zweiten tag mit 20.000 schritten und mittlerweile Blasen an den Füßen im Bett.      Read more

      New England - Roadtrip

      Today is the start of our roadtrip in New England - MA (Massachusetts), VT (Vermont), ME (Maine) and NH (New Hampshire) - on the hunt for autumn colours and experiencing the beauty of New England.

      Driving out from Boston towards the west - carefully not to hit the toll roads - it feels like a trip through English towns and places with names such as Winchester, Chelsea, Leominster, Worcester .... the list is endless

      A couple of titbits
      👆Massachusetts - The pilgrims establishing the first permanent settlement in North America named this area after a nation of people and also took the name for their colony
      Massachusetts is also known as "The Bay State" in reference to the Cape Cod Bay where early settlements were made.
      👆Vermont - is a state known for its natural landscape, or being home to more than 100 19th-century covered wooden bridges, and as a major producer of maple syrup. So it's Pancakes for breakfast.
      The state's name comes from two French words vert (green) and mont (mountain), which explains Vermont's nickname, the "Green Mountain State."
      👆Maine - a state of unspoiled wilderness. The importance of seafaring in the region is evident in the many lighthouses along the coast.
      Maine's nickname is the “Pine Tree State” because it has over 17 million acres of forests and has recognized the white pine tree as an officially designated state symbol.
      👆New Hampshire - state motto "Live Free or Die" is the best expression for NH's individualistic spirit
      New Hampshire nickname is "Granite State" because of its numerous granite quarries.      Read more

      Tag 9

      Heute sind wir früh raus und in die Stadt frühstücken gefahren. Nach einem ausgiebingen Spaziergang durch Parks und Wasser gabs den Ausflug mit dem Amphibienfahrzeug inkl toller Stadtführung. Währenddessen mussten wir ein anderes Fahrzeug abschleppen, war schon irgendwie cool.
      Danach waren wir in Ramsays Burger essen ( mit Aioli die keine war und Mineralwasser, dass nach Tonic water geschmeckt hat 'weil es den Gästen sonst immer nicht schmeckt' 🫣🤨)
      Danach sind wir recht erschöpft heimgefahren. Morgen ist der letzte Tag!      Read more

      Tag 4

      Heute war für mich ein großer Tag. Ich hatte meine Präsentation. Bin super früh aufgestanden um ins Bad zu gehen damit kein anderer in der zwischenzeit das Bad blockiert 😬.
      Danach bin ich alleine reingefahren und habe einige Sessions besucht während Felix Everett zu Fuß erkundet hat.
      Mittags bin ich mit Elisabeth zum Essen gegangen und wir haben uns länger unterhalten.
      Die präsentation lief soweit glatt, ich hatte richtig viel Zeit, da die dritte Gruppe die präsentieren sollte einfach nicht gekommen ist (was wirklich respektlos ist in meinen Augen, da wird man schon angenommen...).
      Danach hat Felix mich abgeholt und wir haben leckeren sushi gegessen und sind dann heim.      Read more

      Boston Celtics

      The cold wind and icy rain made us choose an indoor activity for today: go see a basketball game. We were lucky enough to find tickets for the 1st playoff game - Celtics vs Milwaukee Bucks and it was definitely worth it! Great game, extraordinary atmosphere: more than 18000th people cheering and singing, being very passionate about their team - which, by the way, won in the overtime, after a dramatic end.
      After the game, we went to Chinatown for dinner, at one of the best Chinese restaurants in US (2nd, they say): Gourmet Dumpling House. And yes, it is true: the food was extremely good (did not make it to No. 1 on my list, though), but in rest, it was purely Chinese: loud employees (talking to each other), totally disrespectful, dirty toilets. If ever there, I recommend take out order instead of staying in.
      The rain did not stop, the wind is still crazy blowing and my friends will have to run the 42k tomorrow...But this will be another story.      Read more

      Freedom Trail

      We left the Freedom Trail for last. What is it, more exactly? Well, it is a marked road that leads you to the main 16 historical places in Boston. We walked again close to 20k, making of today another interesting, full & perfect day. The Freedom Trail starts in Boston Common and ends with the Bunker Hill Monument. Through it all you can see the oldest buildings in Boston, the oldest graveyards, the oldest churches. It is a “walking museum” through the city where the American revolution started, the city where every step tells a story.
      Once again we were highly impressed by Copley - a very nice (a bit fancy) area in Boston and we ended the day with a very tasty dinner at Coda, a small restaurant close to Trinity Church.
      Tomorrow we will travel the Greyhound to NY, starting the second part of our American adventure.      Read more

      Just arrived.

      It feels like I lived my longest Friday 13th ever. Finally, though, we landed in Boston. After a quick taxi-drive to the house where we live in and after meeting our host, Eugenio, we decided to have dinner. We were told to go to an Italian restaurant nearby: small place, good food - packed with people. Pasta & wine followed by a short walk along the Mystic River that is right in front of our house. Long day, short evening, low on energy, but can’t wait for tomorrow :)

      Culture in Boston

      Today we decided to feel more of the cultural part of the city, so we visited Harvard, MIT and the Boston Public Library.
      Harvard was always for me one of the most prestigious colleges in US and of course the place where Oliver and Jennifer met (Love Story). It is different though to get the real feeling: to see the campus, the main buildings, the Library, to hear the stories, to learn about the history of the place (e.g.: the college, the oldest institution oh higher learning in US - founded in 1636 - was named after John Harvard because he donated £780 and his collection of 400 books to the college). It is a special place...you can feel it just by being there.
      MIT - you can see it directly from the campus site that it is an „IT base“. The Museum, super interesting - makes you realize how many things the human brain can develop. It is not the technology that develops, it is humans that do that. We evolve and with us, everything around us. If and how we want it.
      The Boston Public Library - 19mil. volumes and electronic resources, free for all. What can I say more? As a lover of books and libraries, I was “at home“ there. It is the second biggest in US (after the Library of Congress; Harvard Library being the 3rd). I find remarkable the idea of having such an immense source of knowledge available for everyone to access.
      We still have some top attractions to check off our list, so tomorrow, our last day of the Boston trip, will be a full day. Hopefully less windy.      Read more
