    Observatorium-Guadalupe NP-Caverns

    September 25 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

    Guadalupe National Park, TX

    October 25, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

    Highest point in Texas!

Our first stop in Texas made for a tough decision. Take a short jog on a loop track or commit to the 6-8 hour trek up to Guadalupe Peak. The risk was that it was 3pm when we got there and sundown was at about 6.30.

Fool hardy with a she'll be right attitude we stuffed our backpacks with water and sugar and made the ascent. By 'made' I mean we coughed, spluttered and snot-rocketed our way to the top, climbing 1000m over 7km. The views were worth a million dollars!

Obviously work like that deserves a calorific reward, and where better to award that than a good old fashioned texan smokehouse bbq, washed down with a bud. Slept like a baby that night!

    Carlsbad caverns/ Guadalupe Mountains

    November 19, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 45 °F

Yesterday I went to Carlsbad Caverns NP. Probably my favorite cave to date. It's so big and open. I went on an audio tour which I greatly enjoyed. It was so well done. The stops were relevant and interesting. Good interpretation. The first tour I've enjoyed since interp training. But the cave itself is really cool. It had all sorts of decorations like cave popcorn and bacon and stuff. But the lighting was also really cool. They wanted to light the path but for it to still feel cavernous and not be too light as to encourage animals to come in. So they hired a Broadway lighting expert person. It's a cool cave.
Then I camped in blm land and in the morning made the 1/2hr drive to Guadalupe mountains. I summited Guadalupe peak which was a rough 9 mile hike but I made it. It was really gorgeous up there. It's literally a desert so there were so many cool cacti and things. And thankfully it wasn't too hot. Then I went back to the blm land where coyotes were howling all night. Pretty cool couple of days.

    More adventures tomorrow!

On the road to El Paso

    December 18, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

    April 13 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 54 °F

Van Horn, TX is only a convenient spot for an overnight stop. We've camped here several times in the past, and our past exploration of the town and area has turned up little of interest. What we have here is another small town in western Texas. Not much happening here!

It appears Van Horn's lack of excitement reaches all the way back to the late 1800's. Back then, a rancher trying to increase the town's attractiveness to settlers suggested a town motto as a tribute to Van Horn's climate, "This Town Is So Healthy We Had to Shoot a Man to Start a Cemetery". Kinda sums up the excitement here.

However, we did come across an interesting site on the trip here. See photo below. We passed aTethered Aerostat Radar System blimp used by the U.S. Border Patrol to watch over the southern border by tracking low flying aircraft. Eight of these special blimps are spaced along the border to watch airspace over the US, Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Carribean.

    Guadalupe peak

    February 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 54 °F

So started off early to hike the peak, but missed the top by less than a 10th of a mile, there was ice across the trail. I tried but decided this View was enough. So only did 8.2 miles all up or all down
