    Guadalupe Mountains NP

    September 8 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

It was a bit chilly in the morning in Cloudcroft and I decided I might be ready for warmer weather.. I haven't been to the Guadalupe Mtns in about 30 years so I decided I should see them again. The scenery on the drive was very flat and empty, no trees, no hills, just nothing. Then suddenly there are these beautiful mountains.

I'm not sure what the elevation is here; or if it is just the change in temperature but the little hike I took felt 3 times longer than it was. No way I could hike up to the peak even if I started first thing in the morning. But it isbeautiful and I would like to try it when it's cooler, maybe in the fall.

Maybe the SKUNKS and BITTING FLIES will be dormant in the cooler weather.

    Observatorium-Guadalupe NP-Caverns

    September 25, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

On the road to El Paso

    December 18, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Wunderschöne Landschaften...eher karg, aber eindrucksvolle Weiten und HügelRead more

    Guadalupe National Park, TX

    October 25, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

    Highest point in Texas!

Our first stop in Texas made for a tough decision. Take a short jog on a loop track or commit to the 6-8 hour trek up to Guadalupe Peak. The risk was that it was 3pm when we got there and sundown was at about 6.30.

Fool hardy with a she'll be right attitude we stuffed our backpacks with water and sugar and made the ascent. By 'made' I mean we coughed, spluttered and snot-rocketed our way to the top, climbing 1000m over 7km. The views were worth a million dollars!

Obviously work like that deserves a calorific reward, and where better to award that than a good old fashioned texan smokehouse bbq, washed down with a bud. Slept like a baby that night!

    Carlsbad caverns/ Guadalupe Mountains

    November 19, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

Yesterday I went to Carlsbad Caverns NP. Probably my favorite cave to date. It's so big and open. I went on an audio tour which I greatly enjoyed. It was so well done. The stops were relevant and interesting. Good interpretation. The first tour I've enjoyed since interp training. But the cave itself is really cool. It had all sorts of decorations like cave popcorn and bacon and stuff. But the lighting was also really cool. They wanted to light the path but for it to still feel cavernous and not be too light as to encourage animals to come in. So they hired a Broadway lighting expert person. It's a cool cave.
Then I camped in blm land and in the morning made the 1/2hr drive to Guadalupe mountains. I summited Guadalupe peak which was a rough 9 mile hike but I made it. It was really gorgeous up there. It's literally a desert so there were so many cool cacti and things. And thankfully it wasn't too hot. Then I went back to the blm land where coyotes were howling all night. Pretty cool couple of days.

    More adventures tomorrow!

    Van Horn

    November 18, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

    Peeking into Guadalupe Mountains NP

    October 24, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

After a sad goodbye to Carlsbad, and New Mexico, we beat feet to poke Carter's nose into Guadalupe Mountains National Park. This is a hiking/backpacking park with the honor of protecting the world's most extensive Permian fossil reef. In fact, the mountain behind Sorren's park photo opp is El Capitan, an exposed portion of just such a reef. Basically, you're looking at a mountain of fossils!

Off to Fort Stockton, our end point for tonight. We haven't finalized the final leg of the trek to Florida yet, so all bets are on for where we'll end up tomorrow.
