Nach der letzten Nacht unter normalen Bedingungen ging es nun endlich los. Das 2022er Great Alabama 650 Meilen Rennen begann. Leider schaffte es nicht jeder Teilnehmer und nicht jedes Team an den Start. Bei einigen sagten die Supportteams kurzfristig ab, andere waren durch den Hurrikan Ian nicht in der Lage, rechtzeitig da zu sein. So bestand das diesjährige Teilnehmerfeld aus 11 Teams, davon 8 Solo-Starter.
Wir bereiteten mit Frances alles vor, stimmten uns hinsichtlich der Stopps ab und checkten ein letztes Mal die Ausrüstung.
Um 10 Uhr ertönte schließlich der Startschuss und die Boote brachen auf ins Abenteuer. Schnell setzten sich Salli O‘Donnell und Bobby Johnson vom Feld ab. Salli, 63 Jahre alt, ist eine der erfolgreichsten Langstreckenpaddlerinnen und Kandidatin auf den Sieg ebenso wie Bobby Johnson. Beide konnten das Rennen in der Soloklasse bereits gewinnen und liefern sich gern erbitterte Wettkämpfe.
Die Überraschung war jedoch Frances, die es keineswegs ruhig angehen ließ. Am Ende des ersten Tages lag sie auf Platz 3 und dachte noch lange nicht an eine Pause.Read more

Little River Canyon National Preserve

I’m in love with national parks, and not just because I have the stamp book. This little preserve is the best of all worlds: great scenery, visitor programs, and an affiliation with a nearby university. The promise of an ‘easy’ half mile with a little climbing was a big fat lie, but the finale at the river’s edge was worth the steep climb down. Note to self: even when you don’t think you need water, bring water.

They marked the trail here by painting a red spot on the trees, which I tend to think of as a mark for thinning. Good reminder to check with the visitor’s center about navigation.Read more

If you've glanced at my mileage below, then you can see I went a very long way yesterday, my longest day yet. Mississippi was a blur. I made it to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and was planning on spending the night there, but every hotel from there through Birmingham was booked. I have no idea what was happening, but I decided to push through to Chattanooga, Tennessee.

15.5 hours after I left Texas, I arrived at the Tennessee hotel at 22:00. I drafted an SUV for the last 80 miles or so because its headlights lit up both lanes well enough that I could see where I was going and if I needed to dodge anything in the road 👍 .

About 50 miles before Chattanooga, my GPS told me to take an exit. Thinking it was one of many fuel stops I added, I ignored it and kept following the SUV. I realized this morning that it was taking me to the Alabama 50 Rides 1 Nation location in Fort Payne. So, today I've ridden back south to take the photo.

I got here 15 minutes before I left because of the time zone change at the Georgia border. (I-59 cuts the corner of Georgia as you go between Alabama and Tennessee.) I expect it to take me an hour and 45 minutes to get back though 🤣.
