    • Day 87

      Detroit

      July 4, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Read more

Détroit, la ville abandonnée pt. 1

      October 11, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

    • Day 6

      Detroit

      September 7, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

In 2021 there was no time to go to Detroit, since our joint time in the US was so limited. This year, however, we made sure that Detroit is on the list. The city is really interesting. Once, 2 million people lived here, now, only 650.000 are left. It was a thriving metropolitan area in the first half of the 20th century, but it steadily declined since then. Currently, around 80.000 houses are empty and those are not only small residential houses, but also huge business and factory buildings. The city is quite photogenic, but at times also a bit spooky...
We first walked around the downtown area and had a look inside the Guardian Building, which is beautifully tiled and decorated, a milestone of american skycraper architecture of the late 20ies.
After two hours of walking, we had a coffee break and took the Qline (Tram) to the northwest of the city. We visited the Museum of Contemporary Art. It featured several African-American artists and had a special exhibition with art by incarcerated people.
A couple of stops further is the Fisher Building, another example of how wealthy the city once was.
We still want to see the Eastern Market on the weekend, so this won't have been our last visit of Detroit!

      McDonald's

      August 25, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

Look, we had to see how it was different.

      1. My chicken nuggets spoke French.
      2. Paper straws, ew.
      3. Sweeter ketchup
      4. Coke not as good.
      5. Donuts (Sophia got a different flavor Mcflurry AND instead of fries I could have gotten poutine.)Read more

      Border Crossing

      August 25, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

We didn't know if we would get tunnel or bridge. Since the weather isn't great today, we were glad for tunnel. Not going to lie, I got a little claustrophobic but it was all good. One lane each way tho!

The border patrol intimidated us a little. Luckily Sophia had to answer most of the questions for us.

Where are we from? Where are we staying? When are we leaving? How do we know each other? Why are we visiting? WHY NOW? And what we do for work (and what college I go to)?

But we got through well and now we ARE IN A DIFFERENT COUNTRY!

    • Day 3

Gaye, Ross and Wonder were nearly here

      May 4, 2022 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

The passenger rail service in Canada is limited but the trains that do run are comfortable and efficient. We take a 4-hour ride to the city of Windsor, which has been an overspill from the car industry of the USA. In fact, the river that separates the USA from Canada is only about the width of the Thames at the Dartford Bridge (500 yards) and the skyscrapers of Detroit are so close, you could almost touch them. My phone is getting texts from the network saying "Welcome to the USA"! It's a surreal feeling to be so close to another country but with border regulations, so far. And also that at this point the USA is north of Canada. Image 1 confirms that spring in Canada lags that of Britain, while the second image is a view from our hotel window.

A walk along the river front is eerily quiet, unlike our South Bank which is teeming throughout the day. It's quite nice to be free of crowds but it's almost as if the city were still in lockdown. But solace follows at the excellent Craft Heads Brewery, which makes 16 (yes, SIXTEEN) brews on site. No thirsts in Windsor!

      Loooong Road Trip

      July 12, 2015 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Kieran picks us up in the morning and we are off on a road trip to Toronto!!! This all sounded like a great idea at the time but its a massive 17 HOUR drive. Kieran and Trav do an excellent job driving and Suki does an excellent job chatting and sleeping in the back seat. Its not too bad though and we even manage to stop off in Detroit for dinner and check out the old abandoned train station and drive by many homeless people on the street.Read more

      Rockin' Detroit

      July 30, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

      * Birthday Celebrations 🎂 (Who the hell is Bob?)
      * GO Tigers ⚾

      Hello from Detroit!
I am having a total fun time over here. Carolyn and her daughter Brooke are hilarious.
Togehther with Laura and Pragya we had dinner at the Cheesecake Factory and I had a raspberry-lemon-cheesecake-birthday-dream 💚 so yummie!

Yesterday we went to Eastern Market, a semi-open air market with local veggies, awesome Capuccino and Pizza 🍕did a River walk (with a nice view on Canada, which was only at the other shore), entered the Roofbar of the GM building (72. Floor) and joined a Tigers Baseball Game afterwards. I was so excited and it was awesome. There were not only the game going on, but also lotteries, races of people who were dressed as foam-cars (siriously), dance-battles, Group karaoke (Bon Jovi 👍) and so on and so on. It felt like the biggest children birthday party ever!

Beside that we visited the Henry Ford museum where I found my 4-wheeler-dream 🚃, the Detroit Institut of Arts which was really cool. Drawings, furniture and sculptures from almost every century and culture.

In between I am planning the Canada Roadtrip Adventure, which will start in a week 😁

      Konzert

      November 15, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C
