Gattlinburg & The Island, Pigeon Forge

August 1, 2023 in the United States

The drive to Gattlinburg was a mixture of country roads, busy dual carriageways, then after a wrong turn, small mountain roads. These were my favourite by far, winding their way up, up up then down, down, down. Steep drops at the side of the road and no barriers in sight. We called in at the Smoky Mountain Park for a pit stop. The scenery was beautiful, mile after mile of tree covered hills. Then we arrived in Gattlinburg. If you are British, you will immediately understand if I describe it as Blackpool on Steroids. I am pleased that I saw it, but I wouldn't be in a hurry to return. After Gattlinburg we went to The Island at Pigeon Forge. I was expecting a similar place to Gattlinburg, and it was a tourist destination action, but so much better than the previous place. The parking is free and it doesn't matter how far you are from the entrance, as there is a free road train that goes round the whole car park. The Island is fresher and cleaner and benefits from having no traffic driving round. Whereas Gattlinburg is mainly along the sidewalk of a very busy road, there are fumes and noise from the vehicles. Pigeon Forge is mainly small rides, restaurants, and shops. It also has a lovely fountain surrounded by plants, which this creates a relaxing focal point, and there is a fountain show every 30 minutes. Surrounding this area are a mass of rocking chairs, free to use, which creates a lovely family atmosphere. In the evening, a Blugrass band entertained us, all for free again. My only disappointment was that I didn't my id on me for the Moonshine tasting. At 62 years old, I am not accustomed to having to prove my age for a drink. They wouldn't even accept a photo of my passport.Read more

      Last Day in Knoxville

      April 24, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

After a wonderful, long weekend with Moriah and Eddie in Knoxville, I'm pulling out this morning. Yesterday was our final day. After brunch at Jake's, we headed to Pigeon Forge to enjoy some mountain views and found ourselves at the Curahee winery. We did wine tasting and bought a few bottles. I bought Strawberry wine for Rebecca whom I'm picking up in an hour on the north side of town. The winery was in a shopping plaza with a little kiddie train, a large grassy area with corn hole, large chess and checkers. We walked around and watched people fly up this ride real fast only to be dropped down. We went into Flavortown and walked around a bit. Then at REI, I became an official lifetime member of their Co-Op. I bought some walking shoes and walking sticks as well, so now I'm all ready for the bourbon trail. Last night we went to Firebird for a nice steak dinner and carrot cake for dessert. I took a nice long bath after dinner. Might not get one of those for awhile.

On to Mammoth Cave today. We're expecting rain and cold again. I see a campfire and strawberry wine in my future. Right now, enjoying my morning coffee.

Great Smoky Mountains HOG Rally Day 3

      October 1, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

What a terrific rally, the best stationary one of the season, hands down! They didn't keep us in the prison 😉, so we continued northwest and took more recommended roads through the beautiful Tennessee country-side.

We got back to the Knoxville area around 16:00, and having skipped lunch, we stopped for an early dinner while I ran a Ross the street to a leather store to pick up replacement zippers for my chaps. I don't have time to have them fixed, but at least I have the zippers now for when I get home.

After dinner, we went into downtown Maryville where the streets were blocked off for the rally. The local motorcycle cops did a riding demonstration, which was awesome! Then the rally did a slow ride race and a ball drop competition. Finally, a rally with motorcycle activities in the evening! I called it a night after that and went back to the hotel.

This morning I wound up leaving again, this time to get the rest of the dealerships and poker runs stops. Hitting a winery at 10:00 in the morning is probably not the best idea, but it was on the poker card so it had to be done 🤣.

Then we rode through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Gorgeous, of course, winding along the Little River with its rushing waters and tumbling falls. We stopped at The Sinks for a few photos, then we rode through Gatlinburg and into Pigeon Forge, where we are now.

      Another amazing day to ride!!

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️

      Day 195 mileage: x (total 54364.8 + ? oops)
