    Ice-Nine [Boston]

January 3 in the United States

For those who don't remember their 60s popular literature, ice-nine was a scary chemical in Kurt Vonnegut's novel "Cat's Cradle." Anyway, it's taking over the East Coast. When we left Boston on January 2nd it was -5 degrees.

As we traveled south we OD'd on battlefields and military parks. Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Antietam, Monocacy, Harper's Ferry. It will be nice to escape the gorey cauldron that shaped the US.Read more

    Malaria tablets start

July 28, 2017 in the United States

D-1 and the anti malaria tablets start. Found out our baggage allowance is only 20kg each for both carry on and checked as we are going on a small plane from Tanzania to Zanzibar so judicious packing will be required. Bought safari hats, lots of sunscreen and bug spray - starting to feel very real.

    Tag 17/18 Washington

July 22, 2017 in the United States

    Getting ready to depart

December 24, 2017 in the United States

Longwood University students and faculty members are heading to Costa Rica for a fantastic learning experience. Our itinerary includes a combination of well-known spots, like Monteverde cloud forest, and places off the beaten path, like an indigenous community and rural villages. This journal will chronicle our travels.

Right now, students are completing an online class so that they have a lot of knowledge when they hit the ground. It also means that we can do more and see more while in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is a unique place. Even though it is not a wealthy country, Costa Rica is one of the global leaders in sustainable development. They are able to produce enough green energy each year to serve the country for almost 11 months with a plan to be energy Independant in the next few years. The country has a nation-wide green movement taken seriously by all.

You might wonder how a developing nation can achieve such an environmental focus. Well, Costa Rica abolished their military. That freed up an enormous sum of money to spend on education, social programs, and protecting the environment. The country has eliminated policies that contributed to destruction of forests and instead, a large portion of the nation is now in reserves. Costa Rica has a focus on ecotourism and is usually listed in the top 5 destinations. This focus has bought a large increase in standard of living to Costa Rica.

One particular travel challenge for students is that they will have to pack light. They are limited to one carry-on suitcase and a student backpack. We will see how well they do!

    Back in the USA

July 12, 2016 in the United States

After arriving at Dulles airport we took an Uber taxi to the storage company to see our Coach for the first time in over 2 months. She still looked great, but needed to run the generator to charge the batteries to start the engine. Temp in high 80's and we're not used to that. Stayed overnight in the coach in the storage place, shattered after a long day.

    Mount Vernon

May 4, 2015 in the United States
