    Charlotte airport

March 18 in the United States

Landed a bit early despite leaving Munich about 1/2 hr late. Went to the foreigners line in customs which wasted about 1/2 hr. Not really our fault - folks in charge of the line were useless. Despite the German passport officer’s concern about my passport, American officer could care less and hardly looked st it. Sigh of relief/ didn’t need an argument.

Flight was smooth - watched two good movies - The Darkest Hour and The Shape of Water. Lunch was decent, dinner didn’t deserve the name. Picture below is our curry sausage “dinner”. Sorry Lufthansa, this is deplorable!! Actually Janet and I were laughing so hard when we saw it, we could barely eat it. Reminded us of a corn dog, except I think a corn dog ( shudder) is better.

Made it home about 8 pm - traffic was light which was nice. Waze told me I-77 was 20 minutes faster than I-85 so I took it.

Will be adding to this diary over the next few days so if you start over (my gosh, who wouldn’t want to ? - LOL). You’ll see more explanations, captions on pics and some videos that were difficult to upload because of limited bandwidth.

Could easily have stayed another week - so many things to see and do!

    Departure Day!

November 2, 2017 in the United States

Last minute prep - weeks of reading stuff about Madrid and planning various adventures while there - brain in sizzle mode at the moment. Checked in and got our boarding passes on our phones - only taking small carry ons - figure I can buy the full matador outfit once I'm there! Counting on my extensive vocabulary of Gracias and Adios to carry us through 12 days - with a bit of Google Translate help on the side!

Checking out various means of transportation from airport to our AirBnB - taxi is easiest - 35 euros though. Airport express bus and then metro looking much cheaper and more adventuresome. :) Love that word adventuresome - behind it lurks a few choice words from time to time. :)

Temps are looking in mid 6o's at our destination with lower 40's at night - should be interesting. Looks sunny for first 3 or 4 days and then rain showers after that - we shall see - weather stuff is always changing. (update - my tapas tour guide just sent me an email telling me to bring an umbrella for Saturday. night - looks like 100% chance of rain on Saturday - lovely - also the day we have a 3 hr walking tour of Madrid scheduled.)

We have tapas tours, museum passes, flamenco night, walking tour, our eatwith.com experience set up and a day to day itinerary set up in Evernote, along with an offline downloaded Google map of Madrid plus a Madrid transit app. So that should be a good start. Now back to finishing packing!

    Crunch Time!

April 16, 2017 in the United States

One more Day of Work , then blasting off to Lisbon, courtesy of Lufthansa - CLT-MUC-LIS. Going over packing lists, the usual. Always good to have a list. Going to make do with 2 carry-ons and that's it. Janet just weighed hers - 18 .2 lbs - Lufthansa allows 18 lbs (8kg). Haven't tried mine. That's just for the bag you throw in the overhead. I carry all my heavy electronic stuff in a small backpack. Has worked this way in the past - hope it continues to work this way.j

So I've called in to inform my credit card companies that I will be traveling overseas and I was surprised to see that my Costco Citibank has a 3% foreign exchange fee as does my Chase Freedom card. That doesn't really matter as I will primarily use my AAA Visa card which has no transaction fee and gives me 3% off on travel via rewards points Contact me if you want one of those!! My plug for the day!!

Now bring on the grilled sardines and world famous custard tarts! How's that for a combo?

    Charlotte airport

November 12, 2017 in the United States

Arrived to mid 40’s temps and rainy. Took about 30 minutes to pass through customs check - that’s always fun. Do you have any food that you are bringing in? Uh, yes, we have a 10 lb Iberian ham that is getting rather stinky. Would that be an issue?

Out to the ground transportation area which is sort of a mob scene of confusion (they have a lot of construction going on at the airport - no one knows for sure what they are doing). Climb on the bus - total madness - people sitting on top of people. Woman with tiny baby carrying enormous amts of luggage that have to be offloaded at each stop so others can get out and then reloaded. How she was managing all this on her own, is beyond me. A tough cookie.

We finally get out - get to the car - it starts! $72 later, we are out of the airport and driving through the dark and rain and construction of I-77 going home. Hard to see the lanes in the dark - not exactly what you want to come home to. At least it was a Sunday, but nonetheless, traffic was heavy. Got most of the way home and then went over a bump of some sort which must have slightly dislodged side door and the inside lights came on, with the alarm going off constantly - so we finally managed to pull over and get that tamed.

Back home to see the cats have survived and are quite talkative. Good news - was worried about Willow - who is getting older and thinner. But she’s tough and hung in there!
