Glennallen- wo ist das denn?

Wieder in Alaska! Der Winter hat Einzug gehalten. Die Temperaturen steigen nicht mehr über 5 Grad am Tag. Wir haben Landstriche passiert in denen es 165 Tage im Jahr unter Null ist. Glennallen ist bekannt für seine außergewöhnliche Landschaft im Copper River Basin, an der Kreuzung der Glenn Highways und Richardson Highways. Glennallen ist das Tor zum Wrangell-St.-Elias-Nationalpark, dem größten Nationalpark der Vereinigten Staaten. Einen Vorgeschmack auf diesen NP haben wir auf der Fahrt hierher bekommen.Read more

Dawson City nach Glennallen

Nach vier Nächten, neuen Bekannten und jede Menge Spaß hieß es heute weiterfahren Richtung Anchorige. Mit der Fähre ging es über den Yukon und danach auf den "Top of the World Highway ".
Dieser ist ca 130 km lang und führt an die Grenze zwischen Canada und Alaska.
Den Namen trägt der Pass nicht umsonst. Wir hatten Regen, Sonne und Schnee und es war 🐖🐖🐖🐖-kalt.
Aber trotz allem 👍👍👍. Die Zollabfertigung war mehr als Problemlos, alle Zöllner total nett.
In Chicken, ja so heißt der Ort wirklich, wärmten wir uns zu erst mal auf und füllten unseren Spritvorräte nach.
Alaska ist auch bärig, obwohl wir keinen Bär bisher gesehen haben, dafür aber eine Elchkuh mit Ihrem Jungen. Die hinterlassen auch einen bleibenden Eindruck.
Da es kurz vor Glennallen wieder zu regnen beginnt nehmen wir heute mal eine "Cabins". Das gefällt mit besser als ein Motel und ist außerdem noch billiger.Read more

Vom Yukon nach Alaska

Da wir leider nicht ewig in Dawson City bleiben können 😭 fahren wir in der Früh um 8.00 Uhr bei 2 Grad los.

Der "Top of the World Highway" zeigt sich von seiner schönsten Seite, die Sicht ist grandios. Die Regengüsse der letzten beiden Tage, hier oben haben zwar ihre Spuren auf der Strecke hinterlassen, aber heute klart es auf und bis auf einen kurzen Schauer ist alles gut.

Die nette Zollbeamtin macht noch ein Foto von uns am Grenzübergang und gibt uns gute Ratschläge über die weiteren Roadconditions, kurzum wir sollen vorsichtig fahren da auch auf der US Seite der Regen die Strecke arg mitgenommen hat und wohl an einer Stelle ein Teil der Fahrbahn weggespült wurde. Aber alles gut, kein Vergleich zum Dempster 😂.

In Alaska angekommen fahren wir weiter Richtung Anchorage, da wir dort morgen einen Termin für Ölwechsel und Service haben fahren wir noch bis Glennalen. Auf dem Weg dorthin sehen wir unsere erste Elchmana mit ihrem Jungen in einem See 😁.Read more

Anchorage nach Glennallen

Eigentlich wollten wir noch ein paar Tage länger in Anchorage bleiben. Jedoch meint es das Wetter nicht gut mit uns. Deshalb beschlossen wir, sobald unsere KTM's frisch gewartet waren, Richtung Tok aufzubrechen.
Heute war das Wetter mehr als angenehm, jedoch hat sich Kerstin eine Erkältung eingefangen welche sich mit triefender Nase und Halsweh bemerkbar macht. Auch mit ein Grund das gute Wetter heute für die Rückfahrt mit auszunutzen.
Landschaftlich ist es bei diesem Wetter noch einmal schöner als bei der Hinfahrt und Kerstin und ich sind uns einig mal einen Urlaub nur in Kanada zu verbringen.Read more

11. Glennallen & Valdez

Glennallen was a central location from which we could head south to check out Valdez and Kennicott before heading west to Anchorage. Our phones could not find a signal, so a kind woman at the Visitor Center made a few calls and found a local campground that had a small (very small) cabin available, which we grabbed. It was cozy, though we definitely raised our eyebrows when the desk clerk gave us tokens for the shared shower. One token = 7 minutes. Haha.

Upon securing our cabin, we headed south to check out the fishing village of Valdez, located on Prince William Sound. Valdez Harbor is the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, which transports oil 800 miles from Prudhoe Bay in the north. The name Valdez didn't mean anything to me until you put the word Exxon before it. Yup. That was the ship that infamously struck a reef in 1989, spilling almost 11 million gallons of oil in the sound. Dang.

The town was pretty quiet. Lots of ships in the marina, but not much happening otherwise. Maybe its slow on Mondays.Read more

Glennallen

Leaving Palmer (which we found out was started in the thirties as a government farming project during the Great Depression) we took the Glenn Highway to our next overnight destination, Glennallen. The scenery along this drive is beautiful! You are driving with the Talkeetna Mountains on one side and the Chugach Mountains on the other side and follow the Matanuska River to its headwaters. There we stopped at the Matanuska Glacier (photos 4 & 5). This glacier is the largest road accessible glacier in America and you can view it from the road. We stopped and took a short hike to get a closer look at it. The glacier is 4 miles wide at it's terminus and extends for about 26 miles back into the Chugach Mountains. It is classified as a valley glacier; a body of solid ice that flows like a river under its own weight through an existing valley. About 10,000 years ago it began its retreat to its present day location, and it has not seen any significant change in mass for almost two decades. Just after the glacier we passed Sheep Mountain (see photo 9) which is part of the Talkeetna Mountain Range. Our highest elevation we traveled was 3350 feet. Although the indigenous Ahtna people have lived in the region for countless years, the town of Glennallen was established in the mid-1940s as a highway construction camp for the Glenn Highway.Read more

Day 50 Ends in Glennallen

Today being Monday, we got caught in construction delays on the way back down the Richardson to Glennallen today. Not sure exactly what is being done, but the project looks bigger than what might be accomplished in what is a short construction season in Alaska.

We had two reasons for coming to Glennallen, which is at the junction of the Richardson and Glenn highways. Both reasons had to do with our plans for later this week when he head to McCarthy/Kennicott.

Since we are planning to drive the motorhome to McCarthy, we wanted to get an idea of what the road conditions would be like. We had already tried calling the National Park Service Ranger Station in Chitina and gotten voice mail. So, we decided to ask our questions at the main Visitor Center for the Wrangell-St Elias National Park and Preserve ... just 8 miles south of Glennallen.

As has been the case at every national park we’ve visited since COVID-19 reared its ugly head in 2020, the VC is closed, but rangers are on duty outside. The good news is that the ranger didn’t blink an eye when we said we planned to take a 28-foot motorhome over to McCarthy. Though he suggested we leave the toad in Chitina — which we had already planned on doing — he said the road was fine and we’d have no problems, except perhaps a delay at bridge that is undergoing inspection work.

The road question answered, next we needed data/cell signal to confirm a few other plans. So, we drove back up to Glennallen and settled into one of the few 30A FHU sites at the Northern Nights Campground. The place is nothing special, but it is clean and well-maintained. It also has speedy wi-fi ... though the owners don’t guarantee that will always be the case. The property is next to a cell tower, so our data is strong anyway ... thanks to GCI’s partnership with T-Mobile.

Since our schedule has loosened up, we are going to spend a second night here and use tomorrow to do some sightseeing along the Glenn Highway.Read more
