      You paid how much?!!!

      October 7, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Today (Friday) was a busy day, checking out of one hotel, collecting the rental car, and checking into the final hotel of this trip.

Yet again it was an early start for me, as Star Wars has no room for malingerers. I was in line for Early entry at 6:30am and lined up at the Frontierland barrier gate just after 7:30am. When the portal opened I charged through like I was a Labrador chasing a bacon sandwich, and ended up being in the first Rise of the Resistance boarding group of the day.

I cannot overstate how incredible this ride is, but maybe the fact that from the time I rode it in the first boarding group, to exiting the ride, the standby line had swelled to 90 minutes, and continued growing to over two hours, illustrates its magnificence.

My Star Wars appetite was not yet sated, so I headed straight down the Single Riders line for Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run. This time I was the engineer, so I was able to fully enjoy the ride without worrying about my breakfast making a reappearance due to motion sickness.

By this time it was just after 9am, and time to meet Jean, who prefers to operate on a more relaxed schedule than I do. After some more merchandise shopping we boarded our submarine for Finding Nemo’s Submarine voyage.

Stepping back onto dry land it was time to catch the monorail out of the park and back to the Grand Californian to check out.

Since checkout was 11am and my Turo rental wouldn’t be dropped off until just after 1pm we had some time to kill, so we spent it soaking in as much grandness as we could. I also availed myself of the fitness centre facilities, grabbing some bottled water and free protein bars. I didn’t actually workout, I just went directly to carbo loading.

When our traffic delayed Turo finally arrived I had a lightning course in operating the Mustang Mach E, before I got behind the wheel and back on US roads to drive to my favourite Anaheim hotel, The Ayres.

We had a few hours to relax and unwind before the really big event of the day, our dinner reservation at Club 33. For those who haven’t heard of Club 33, (probably most of you) it’s an insanely exclusive private club inside the Disneyland Park. It was personally designed by Walt, and has a very limited membership. You have to be invited and approved to become a member, and then there’s the small matter of the $30,000 US joining fee, and annual fees of $15,000. So how did we get in? Jean has a client who is a member, who very, very kindly arranged a dinner reservation for us.

Arriving at the club’s secret entrance just after 8pm we buzzed the intercom and were swiftly ushered into the inner sanctum. Over the next two hours we had the most refined, and delicious dining experience of our lives. It was also the most expensive dinner I have had, and probably ever will have. How expensive? Well this meal, including tip, came to just over $350 U.S., which at today’s exchange rate is just shy of $700 NZ. It was four courses, from starter, to appetiser, entree and dessert, each course expertly prepared and exquisitely presented. It is insanely expensive, but this food was beyond delicious, and this experience literally cannot be bought, it is the definition of priceless.

On a high from this singular evening, we left the club just in time for the late performance of the Fantasmic show on the Rivers of America. Then there was just time for one last longing visit to Galaxy’s Edge before leaving the park and catching a Lyft back to the hotel.

What a night, and what an extraordinary Disneyland experience we’ve had!

      Disney California Adventure Park

      June 5, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Our daytime adventures from Day 1 at Disneyland, (the Disney California Adventure Park used to be known as Disney Studios)

We started with the white water rapids ride - slow-mo video of Michelle and Leo is hysterical!

A fantastic day, Michelle loved meeting the characters and the show (see next footprint). And I was more about the rides - Joy and Leo tried their first rollercoaster. Fair to say Leo takes after me and Joy after Michelle on their enjoyment of those!

      Disneyland - Day 2 morning

      January 16 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Started the morning at Disney California Adventure Park which is next door to Disneyland. Basically after passing security you turn right for Disneyland and left for the Adventure Park.

We wanted to do the Incredicoaster earlier but they had a malfunction but luckily were able to do it later, we weren’t so lucky with the Web Slinger ride, we were next to board and the ride was shutdown, better than been stuck on the actual ride. We could see some people stuck on the Incredicoaster, that would not have been fun to get down from.

Got through a lot of our rides before leaving the park at 3:30 pm so decided to head to Disneyland for our evening session.

      Rides:

Mike & Sulley to the rescue (Monsters Inc)
      Maters Junkyard Jamboree (Cars)
Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout
      Midway Mania (Toy Story)
      Goofy’s Sky School
Ariel’s Undersea Adventure (The Little Mermaid)
      Soarin’ Around the World
      Incredicoaster (The Incredibles)

      Disneyland Resort / Galaxy's Edge

      June 9, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

It All Started With a Mouse

      July 25, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

The day is finally here. The day a single 31 year old Disney fan enters the Magic Kingdom ON HER OWN!

To help justify my solo attendance I opted to undertake the exclusive 'Walking in Walt's Disneyland Footsteps' Tour which was a special 3.5 hour tour including lunch with which we would be taken around the park and told stories about its construction, the imagineering and ultimately it's creator- the man himself Walt Disney.

I've done a lot of research on Disney over the years especially during my degree. Many people have referred to media degrees as Mickey Mouse degrees so during mine I steered into the curve and wrote essays on Disneyland, Baudrillard, Hyper-realism and Mary Poppins. I think I thought I was proving a point. Regardless, I already knew a fair amount about Disneyland's construction and how much the park had meant to Walt in his later years. Due to the crowds, we wore ear pieces to ensure we could hear our tour guide but this also meant he could play us significant audio clips from Disney history. I can't lie, I got chills when he played us his opening speech from July 17th 1955. It's short but sweet so I thought I'd include it below:

"To all who come to this happy place - welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams and the hard facts that have created America with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world."

I believe this speech still epitomises Disneyland today.

The true highlight of the tour was spending half an hour in Walt's very own apartment above the Fire Station in Main Street USA. This really did give me tingles. Walt spent a lot of time here in his later years especially during the park's construction and early days. There is a lamp in the window which was always left on during his times of residence. As a mark of respect the lamp has remained lit since his death in 1966.

As the park was so busy I opted to go on very few rides and simply soak up the Disney atmosphere and indulge in my photography. Doing this I made several inreresting observations. The first was the realisation that kids were still carrying around autograph books and they were on sale in all the gift shops. This was a nice surprise as I'd assumed the autograph had been subsumed by the selfie. Second was the 'Bibbidy Bobbdy Boo Boutique' just inside the Castle. On entering you struggle to focus at first through the mist of hairspray and glitter but once the fog clears you are greeted with a frenzy of little girls sat in parlour chairs having their hair done by Fairy Godmothers and being dressed as Princesses. It was magical and a little creepy all at the same time! I confess I was tempted to ask whether big girls could play too! My 3rd interesting observation was that there is no signal on the Haunted Mansion. Spooky huh? I was also chuffed to find the entrance to 'Club 33' which was Disney's exclusive club set upstairs in the New Orleans houses of Frontierland.

The day ended with 'Fantasmic' - Disney's infamous night time show on the water in Frontierland. I first saw this in 1994 and thought it was the most magical thing I'd ever seen. I still do.

      Our Delightful Day at Disney!

      February 20, 2019 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

Oh man, where to start? Today started off slow, a trip to get some groceries because our hotel doesn't have continental breakfast. I am always surprised to see liquor in a grocery store, but we bought some wine and beer. The beer is Shock Top (so good) and the wine was $3. We haven't tried it yet, but I felt like we just had to for that price. We ended getting to Disneyland around 3pm. (We walked and went through Downtown Disney. We signed up for the Disney Vacation Club presentation tomorrow because they will drive us to the park and give us money. 😂 Will update if we buy a timeshare. 😉 (I'm kidding.)

Disney is amazing. Not only is it the happiest place on Earth, I feel like it is the safest. You go through a security check to get in, and walk though a metal detector. Some people may see this as a burden, but I really appreciate it, because I know that going in it's going to be so safe. There's security and police everywhere, and everyone is super nice. I get it now. I've heard that Disney is an intense place to work, and studying more about Arts and Cultural Management, I can't believe how much must go into this business. They have gone through so many lengths to make sure people are having the optimal experience. Lots of people sweeping up trash, lots of light and signage, and the app is a must have. It gives you everything! Ride wait times, ordering food, making reservations, booking rides, storing pictures! We didn't get any character autographs today because it was a short day, we spent it looking around and doing things we deemed more important. Being the low season, there were some things closed for refurbishment. The most depressing of which being Sleeping Beauty's Castle. (Guess I'll have to come back!)

My very first ride at Disney was Star Tours, which is the Star Wars ride. :) We then saw that Space Mountain only had a 20 minute wait so we jumped on that opportunity. I had so much fun on Space Mountain, I actually kind of felt like I was going to cry because it was so magical. We then tried to figure out how to use the Fast Passes... Which we did! We got some food, watched the Soundsational Parade. (It focuses a lot on music.) And during the parade it started to rain! We walked through New Orleans Square and looked at the shops, and We ended up going back to the room to gear up a little better for the amount of rain, and made it back to the park in time for our ride on Indiana Jones. We then rushed to see the laser music show, (Mickey's Mix Magic?) and since there was still time we ran over to the carousel, and Snow White's Scary Adventure. We were running around pretty hard and the park closed. So we thought we'd go to Downtown Disney to get a beer and rest our feet. Well, everything there closes at 10 or 10:30 too. Soooo, we did a long and painful walk back to the hotel. We're both parked back in the hotel, have cracked a beer and I am curled up in bed, and Wallace just took a shower while I wrote this. So, bedtime beckons. (It's almost 2am back home!) 😴😴😴

      Good Morning Mickey!

      July 5, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

On day 2 of our park fun we visited Disneyland Park. Another early start to take advantage of Magic Hour (it switches parks each day). This time our first destination was Tomorrowland and Fastpasses for Star Tours. Fastpasses in hand we found some breakfast. Once our bellies were full we rode Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, a semi-submersible sub ride themed after the famous Disney clownfish. We also rode Star Tours, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, Autotopia, the Jungle Cruise, Tarzan’s Treehouse and Pirates of the Caribbean before stopping for some lunch. After lunch we rode the Disney Railroad all around the park and visited the Pirates Liar on Tom Sawyer Island. Our last ride was the Haunted Mansion.
It was so hot, we decided to head back to the hotel for a break and to visit the pool.
We got freshened up and returned to the park in time to take the train to New Orleans Station and check in for our 8 pm dinner reservations. We enjoyed our meal and sat through the Fantasmic Show. By the time we got back to the hotel everyone was exhausted again and we called it a night.

DYK: Disneyland Park opened in July 1955. The park was designed and built under the direct supervisor of Walt Disney. Disney California Adventure Park opened in 2001.

      Disneyland - last day

      December 6, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Our last day at Disney where we got to go on our favourite rides from the first 2 days and a few new ones. The water rapids ride was unsurprisingly the shortest line but we went on it a few times and got a little wet. After 3 days and a lot of walking (about 15km each day) our Disney time was over. We all love it but we're glad we were not there in peak season. Off to San Diego tomorrow.Read more
