Trek America -Yellowstone NP to Jackson

    May 19, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

Morale was low as we packed wet tents into our trailer and stood shivering around the camp stove. We had experienced wonder and elation during our time in Yellowstone but as the van pulled away and the sun crested the tree line (Canned Heat - On the road again playing on the stereo) we were happy to be on our way to warmer climes and new adventures.

After leaving the boundaries of Yellowstone we moved into the Grand Teton National Park that sits just below. Here we saw the Teton mountain range rising dominant and snow capped before a plateau. We moved ever closer until we were directly under the feet of these giants. After lunch in the woods we hiked around a grey lake to squeeze between the cragged mountain face and the stony shoreline to find a thunderous waterfall hidden in the rock face. We took a boat back across the lake to our starting point, which was fortuitous as the heavens started to open and rain descended upon us once more.

As we drove away and headed to our campsite in Jackson, it was on everyone's minds that we were facing another cold and wet night under canvas, which was still wet from the previous night's deluge. Lady Luck shone on us however as when we arrived we found that for a nominal fee we were able to upgrade to some basic cabins with bunk beds and a power outlet. Being off the cold ground and able to take a shower (this was not possible in Yellowstone due to the remote location) was an absolute blessing. Morale as raised to a giddy high and we slept like proverbial logs.

    Jackson Hole WY

    August 25, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

Spending the night here. Have campsite right on the Snake River. The Smolenskis have a cushy cabin up the hill from me...and the chaos of 2 dogs. :). Attached photos are from Thursday at Badlands, Sturgis (I think something is supposed to go on there but at least I can say I was there), and Devils Tower (Close Encounters). Spent Thursday night at Buffalo WY. So far done 2100 miles since Wednesday.Read more

    80 degrees? WHAT 80 degrees?

    April 26, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 43 °F

We had packed for a reasonable variety of weather before we left. Just 2 days before departure, reports of 80 degree weather on our route made an appearance. I snatched more hot-weather clothes from the shelves and tossed them in. Then we HIT the 80 degree weather and said, "this is nuts!" We headed for Jackson, WY where there were predictions of snow dusting and cool temps. We were disappointed on the snow front, but not the temperature. In fact, donning all my layers did not suffice, and I refused to wear the sheep skin outside the trailer in case any activists might throw paint on it.

On our way back to the campground today, we dipped into Sports Authority where they were having a nice end-of-season sale. The selection was thin. I thought one jacket might do, but it was unisex and kind of made me look like a box, or perhaps a murky fish aquarium in need of cleaning. Gordon found a VERY fluffy cold-weather down vest that looked like it would do the job. But the only color was white, and when I tried it on I looked exactly like a marshmallow with legs. Then we found this sweet transitional down jacket which had only one in my size ... fortunately purple. Now if only I hadn't decided I only needed to pack one of my snappy wool hats. I chose the red one, leaving the PERFECTLY MATCHED purple one at home. Fortunately, I'm just about that age where people EXPECT you to start wearing purple and red together.

As of this evening practically ALL of Wyoming east of us is getting snow. Tomorrow we are going to brave it and head for Lander. I feel prepared for the temperatures, but am now wondering if I should have picked up a pair of those "chains" for your shoes.

    Jackson Hole Continued

    April 26, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 43 °F

The sun sort of showed itself today, lighting up patches of mountain peaks and valleys, while leaving the dramatic cloud cover in tact. We went driving on our last day in Jackson to enjoy the view in this gorgeous country.

    Jackson Hole KOA

    April 23, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

Nice KOA 12 miles south of Jackson, right next to the snake river.

Our greeter has been working at KOAs for 19 years. He and his wife live in a bus. When they first retired, he spent 5 years fixing up the bus all by himself while at various campgrounds, mostly in the desert.

We enjoyed a dinner of Chicken Pot Pie down the road from the KOA. Oh... almost forgot, a pint of locally brewed lager.

We are now snug as bugs in our trailer, drinking tea and listening to a light drizzle on the roof.
