    Ankunft Los Angeles

    September 24, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

    Los Angeles Day #6

    October 26, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

My last full day on this trip was a bit more quiet and relaxed than some of the others.

In the morning I got some breakfast at the hotel and hung out by the pool for a bit. Then I went up to the world-famous Griffith Observatory. The building itself has free admission, where you can explore various displays related to science and space, and you can look at the huge telescope.

Mostly, due to its unique placement on Mount Hollywood, it has very impressive views of the city from every side, including Downtown and Hollywood. The location has also been used in a number of movies.

Speaking of which, later in the afternoon I went on one of those “Celebrity Homes” tours. I’ve done them lots of times before, but I usually book via Starline which is the most well-known of the tour operators here. This time I tried a different company called Ultimate Hollywood Tours.

The tour was pretty good, and the guide was entertaining. I mainly take the tour, not so much to see the driveway or the outside of someone’s home, but mainly as a chance to see a bit more of the city, especially the fancy neighborhoods. Indeed, we passed by Hollywood Hills, Beverly Hills, Mulholland Drive and some of the other swanky locations where most homes cost $10 million and up. Pretty nuts.

We saw the homes of Taylor Swift, William H. Macy, Michael Jackson, Elvis and many others along the way.

In the evening, I went for a walk on the famed Sunset Strip and eventually had dinner at the Saddle Ranch, a western-style chop house where they have a mechanical bull inside. Only in L.A.! (I didn’t try it).

After dinner I went to the Laugh Factory for a comedy show. For a little over two hours, around 6-7 different comedians would do their routine. They were all pretty good, some more than others of course. I hadn’t heard of the comedians before, except for one Pablo Francisco who was the headliner for the evening. Ironically he was the one who got the least amount of laughs 🤷‍♂️

Overall a good show though and a nice way to end my last evening in Los Angeles.

Walk of Fame and Warner Bros Studio

    November 3, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Here are some of the signs that have caught our eyes along our journey through the USA

One that we didn't manage to get a picture of but remains in our memory -

'Don't park your car here. If you do it's number plates and wheels will be removed'.

    Now that's a warning.

Also here is another playlist of music that kept Alex going on the long plane, train and automobile trips that have made up our journey across the USA (http://open.spotify.com/user/somebodyalreadyhasit/playlist/2jQil3oREduPGqhcobkFui) -

Beastie Boys - No Sleep Till Brooklyn
Big Country - In A Big Country
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son

    Hollywood

    May 20, 2015 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Met de huurauto op weg naar Hollywood. Wel even wennen.

    May 30, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We planned that our first day after Trek America would be a 'rest day' thinking that we would need it. However after spending most of yesterday sitting in a van from Las Vegas to Los Angeles we felt restless and wanted to get out in the California sunshine. With our hostel situated in Hollywood we are well placed for views of the Hollywood sign as well as getting to the Griffith Observatory, both situated high on the hills of Griffith Park. Our hostel had information on three hike routes of varying difficulty and we chose the moderate climb. However even this started with an ascent of 600 feet over the first mile of the trail. Furthermore it was a two mile walk from our hostel to the trailhead. As said, we felt restless...

We arrived at the trailhead in good time, leaving paved streets for sandy tracks which quickly rose above nearby houses. Being Saturday morning there were a number of families, dog walkers and hikers out on the trail, there were even groups of horse riders whose shit stank in the rising heat (the horses' not the riders at least). With the city below us we moved up and around ridge lines of hardy thorny shrub.

When we reached the junction with the Hollyridge Trail (the first and more gentle ascent) we thought we were getting close, however as we moved closer to the Hollywood sign we could see the trail continue to rise and switchback across the hills. Midday was closing in and the trail simmered in the 26C degree heat. We would approach a blind bend in the trail with only bright blue sky visible over the lip. Approaching, we were poised to turn the corner and see something to indicate that we were closer to our goal. Yet we only found another steep rise to another blind bend. We trudged on, determined to get to the top and eventually we did. To our surprise we found that we had actually risen above the sign and made it to the peak itself. We sat under some scant shade to greedily drink from our water bottles before making the descent. From our position we could see Los Angeles stretch out to the horizon in all directions, however heat and air pollution obscured much of this.

We could see in the distance, across the ridge lines, The Griffith Observatory, built in 1933 to observe stars in the night sky but made famous by stars of other kind from its use as a location in films including 'Rebel Without A Cause' and 'The Terminator', leading it to become an emblem of the city.

Whilst at the observatory we managed to meet with Matti from Trek America, who is staying in Santa Monica before he begins his surf school tomorrow. Matti has been a very good friend on our trip so it was brilliant to see him as we toured the observatory with its exhibits on space. However it was also bitter sweet because it involved a further goodbye. We really hope Matti has a great time at surf school and that we are able to keep in touch.

By the time we returned to the hostel it was after 6:00pm, having hiked a total of 11-12 miles. We arrived back proud but exhausted. So much for a 'rest day'!

    Stars und Sterne

    September 16, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Read more

    Everything comes to an end...

    April 22, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

    The Greek..

    October 15, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Today is Hollywood Day! This morning I switched from my hotel in Marina del Rey to The Magic Castle hotel in Hollywood - usually rated #1 or #2 in all of Los Angeles. I have stayed here several times before and it is indeed a very good hotel. The service is just great, and they have all these extra touches like an ice cream machine and free soda. As much as you want! It’s also located very centrally in the touristy section of Hollywood.

After checking in I went for a walk in that very area - the Walk of Fame is indeed the only place in Los Angeles where people actually walk. I then tried the half hour tour of the famous Chinese Theatre, which was actually very interesting. I also browsed the Hollywood & Highland center, where you can see the Hollywood Sign from a distance. I’ve been here 8 times now so I kind of know the sights very well but still a fun place to visit.

It was 35 degrees C today - very hot! - so I spent a bit of time by the nice pool at the hotel. After some dinner I eventually made my way to The Greek, a legendary venue where I saw Evanescence live. They were playing with a symphony orchestra as part of a new production and tour that launched just yesterday. It’s a bit of a contrast from their usual rock shows, but great performance from Amy Lee and a lot of beautiful songs.
