      Rainy Day Museum #1

      July 21, 2021 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

“When one tugs at a single thing in nature
He finds it attached to the rest of the world.”
      John Muir, Nature Writer
(From a panel at the Islands & Ocean VC)

Another rainy day in Homer. A day of steady rain. A good day to visit museums.

Our first stop was at the Alaska Islands & Ocean Visitor Center in the area of Homer referred to as the Bypass. It serves as the VC for the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, which includes remote places such as the Aleutian Chain, the Pribilof Islands, and more. It’s a refuge that the US Fish & Wildlife Service website describes as “Thousands of Islands, Millions of Birds.”

Despite the rain, we took a short stroll down to the Beluga Slough before going inside the VC to check out the indoor exhibits … a replica of a Bering sea bird rookery, murals, Aleutian artifacts, a field camp, and a real-time tide gauge.

Interesting … well worth the visit.

      The Kenai RV Shuffle Game

      July 16, 2019 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

Everywhere we went on the Kenai Peninsula, we encountered our fellow RV travelers. RVs are everywhere. When we first arrived, we were worried that we wouldn’t find a place to camp. Once we figured out the rules of the “Kenai RV Shuffle”, camping on the Kenai became easy.

The Rules of the Kenai RV Shuffle
      1. It is a simple of game of musical chairs.
      2. RVers break camp early and hit road and do their thing. They plug up the dump stations, attraction parking lots, grocery stores, gas stations, and every scenic view point.
      3. Everyone shuffles around until its time to find a place to camp. The camp selection window is between 2:00 and 5:00 pm. If you wait until after 5:00 all campgrounds will be full, and you will spend the night at some parking lot, which is like not getting a chair.
      4. The next day, it is repeat as required. Nobody spends more than one night in one place.

      Katmai NP&P to Beluga Lake

      July 18, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

Bears on the beach saw us off from Naknek Lake … and thus we began the return trip from Katmai National Park & Preserve to Homer.

By 8:00p we were “feet wet,” leaving Katmai National Park behind. By 9:00p, we were landing softly on Beluga Lake in Homer.

The air seemed slightly clearer on the way back and I even managed to get a shot or two of some of the volcanoes, as well as the Homer Spit.

Dinner out (in style) at the Princess

      July 31, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

We weren't quite done in Homer, one more stop before we left, at the Alaska Islands & Oceans Visitor Center. Just an entirely different perspective from the usual Alaska natural science museum. This one concentrates on the Aluetians, what happened with the early fur traders, then in World War II and how they are still recovering and being analyzed to help us better understand this very delicate eco system. One of Tom's friends. Dick Hudson, served on one of the islands, so I understood there was some conflict, but I really didn't appreciate the scale of the fighting that happened here.

Tried to stop by Two Sisters bakery on the way out of town, swamped with people. Darn. No coffee and pastry to help sustain us on our drive north.

We really spent the rest of the day driving. Had planned to lunch in Soldotna, but some how got out of town with out finding a place we could pull in before we're had already past it.... and we dislike turning around and going back! "Surely we will find something up ahead" ....we finally stopped at 2 p.m. in a pull out and munched on cold cuts, cheese and crackers. Which was just enough to get us to our overnight stop at Cooper Landing. (Which just happens to be on Bean Creek Dr. Thought Jeanie would enjoy this!)

I picked this stop because it is one of five locations in Alaska with a Princess Cruise Lodge, and this particular one had an attached RV park. So just a really nice last night. Cindy and I got to shower, do a little gift shop shopping, and enjoy dinner on their deck overlooking the Kenai river! Cindy hosted dinner for Tom and I; and our final dinner out was fish and chips, (just one more time!) with a nice glass of chardonnay!

We cant believe that this is the"end of the road" for Cindy... she has been with us 3 weeks, but we felt like it went by so fast!! And we were spoiled with an extra pair of hands, not only on the RV, but with Auggie. She always made sure he was walked every morning, gas stop, lunch stop, grocery stop, and evening stop; plus he got to sleep with her!

      Hello Homer!

      July 29, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

Campground is just up on the bluffs out of Homer, so today was our first real glimpse of the town. Woke up to a beautiful morning, could see across Kachemak bay in one direction, and in another direction really almost across Cook Inlet to see the mountains there!

Got a campground shuttle down to the visitor center, and then walked up to the Pratt Museum, which is a small but very well done collection of history (including some Kilcher stories), natural science, and art. I love how museums are intermingling these collections. (Maybe I needed to go more often!)

Enjoyed a Mexican lunch, the first Mexican food since we left California! Not bad, but not the same as Velascos! Still it was fun to have a taco, enchilada combo again. (... and if you didn't want Mexican you could order Italian!) To be totally honest, we often have taco salads for dinner. Just one of the many types of salads we make for dinner. Taco salad, chicken salad, salmon salad, Italian salad (that's a salad with salami and cooked pasta) or cabbage and apple salad.... you name it, we have turned it into a salad!

Strolled some galleries and then grabbed the Homer trolley and headed out to the spit, which is a very long sliver of land/ sand out into the bday. Like 4 or 5 miles looking and, maybe 1 mile wide, except at the harbor area, I guess? Best to fire up your Google map app and take a look! The "spit" is a VERY popular place for vacationers, many RVs, many fishermen, many shoppers, and views of the bay every where! Got a little local history from the driver, saw another eagle nest, and viewed the harbor. More walking, talking, and shopping! It didn't matter what we did, it was just a gorgeous day to be outside!

Trolley back to shuttle, shuttle back to campground, and barbecue chili dogs for dinner! (No salad!)

      Rainy Day Museum #2

      July 21, 2021 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 55 °F

After our visit at the Islands & Ocean Visitor Center, we drove to the nearby Pratt Museum.

The exhibits are multi-faceted, focusing on art — fabric and other, natural history, native cultures, homesteading, fishing, and marine ecology. There are wildlife mounts and skeletons as well.

What I enjoyed the most were the quilts, the designs of which were inspired by nature. Also, there were some beautiful photographs that attracted my attention.

I had read that there is a botanical garden, but it was too wet to spend time outdoors today.
