    Saturday, April 21

April 21 in the United States

    Saturday, April 21
We leave Hunting island at 9:00. We've enjoyed this area and would like to return someday to have another look, in spite of the uneven campsite, other campers' constant campfires, and the bugs. I have several insect bites.

OUR ROUTE TO HUNTINGTON BEACH STATE PARK, MURRELL'S INLET
ROUTE 21 to IS 17 North
    526 East to bypass Charleston
    17 North to Murell's Inlet

A fair amount of traffic all the way, but it flows smoothly.

A scenic drive. We travel through lots of salt water marshes and low country. We cross 2 major rivers near Charleston, the Cooper and the Wamdo. The bridges are impressive. Highway 17 from Charleston to Myrtle Beach is sometimes called Sweetgrass Highway, due to all the little Sweetgrass Basket Stands set up along the side of the road.

We arrive around 1:00. There is no vacancy for tonight at Huntington State Park, so we are at Lakewood Camping Resort, where there are at least 1000 campsites! There are quite a few campers here tonight. $58.00 for the night. Lots of amenities which we probably won't use!

We unload the bikes, then drive 14 miles to Golf Shoes America where Tony buys his golf shoes. We drive through the heart of Myrtle Beach. It is quite the beach city. Shops, discount beachwear stores, restaurants. . .mile after mile. Traffic is slow. I think I prefer the quiet life in Murrell's Inlet!

We return to the campground, make dinner, and take a quick bike ride around this huge campground!

    Almost finished rereading Icy Sparks!

    Myrtle Beach

October 23, 2015 in the United States

This is a quick trip to Myrtle Beach to give a speech on regulation for wildfire mitigation at the semi-annual Backyards & Beyond Conference. I arrived on Wednesday, flying from Tampa to Charlotte to Wilmington, NC, and driving south to Myrtle Beach. Checked into the hotel and quickly changed into a bathing suit and went out to the beach while the sun was still shining. It's mid-October, but the ocean is still about 72 degrees and a little bit rough. I jumped waves for a little while and then took a nap on the beach. Got a little color, but not too much.

Then I realized that I hadn't eaten all day, so I stopped at a place called Joe's and had a bbq pork sandwich and a beer. Back to the hotel, and changed to appropriate attire to attend the opening reception at the Sheraton for the conference. I was surprised to see Patty Blankenship there. We sat and caught up for a while. Then it was back to the hotel for the night.

Thursday I packed up my suitcase and headed out to my next hotel, the Hampton Inn at Broadway at the Beach. Then off to the conference for lunch and some wildfire education. Dinner with Patty and Teresa Vonn at a place called Rooster's. Then back to the hotel to work on my speech.

Friday started out slow as I got in the car and spilled coffee on the outfit I selected to wear for my talk. Had to go back in and change. Then to the venue to set up in the room. I was impressed with the number of people who attended my talk. We shared horror stories about trying to enact regulations and the public's reaction. I was not alone! After my talk, I watched Patty's. Good to see slides relating to the Cohesive Strategy. I thought, "I put those semi-colons and commas in the complex vision statement, and I selected those photos for the cover of the document." OK, so I'm not very powerful, but I do take pride in my work. And then the reward, a glass of red wine while Jack Cohen explains why the houses burn down behind green vegetation, and how simply that can be prevented. Years of work, and we still can't get that message across!

    Vomit everywhere

October 5, 2017 in the United States

We arrived at approximately 5PM on Wednesday the 4th.....had a great time at the beach but not long after sundown the vomit started flying. By the end of the night Denali, Dane, Caroline, and Katie were vomiting. No one slept and we were down to our last blanket. We made it through and 9 loads of laundry later ( thanks NaNa) we were able to settle into a nice rest day which ended with a family movie.Read more

    Luxusstrandresort im Regen

May 24, 2017 in the United States

Walking on the boardwalk in Myrtle Beach

April 7, 2017 in the United States

So nice to be walking around in summer weather.

I even when to put my feet in the Atlantic Ocean. Not surprisingly the water was quite cold. Although, that didn't stop some people from going for a swim!
