    How Many Guys ?

    July 12, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Does it take to change 10 batteries, answer 2. Deal done and new AGM batteries are now installed, 8 x 6 volt and 2 x 12 volt. Been nursing our old ones since we bought the coach last year. Hurray !!

    Shipshewana, Indiana

    October 6, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

More trip research brought us to this small Amish community with a population of 658. The rural area is predominantly Amish farms. The town is beautifully decorated for Fall and there are as many Amish buggies as there are vehicles on the streets. This is in sharp contrast to the city of Cleveland which we drove through earlier in the day! We're staying in a nice inn that is decorated in Amish style, complete with quilts on the beds. We went to a local restaurant for dinner and enjoyed a typical Amish meal. It's been an interesting experience.Read more

    Bloomington, IN

    November 12, 2016 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 5 °C

    Throw back to uni days!

Couldn't help but pop on in the catch up with the baby sister. We've been lovingly put up on the living room floor of her 4 bedroom dorm. The luxury of free accommodation is overwhelming!

Nightime tempuratures are now teetering on zero, but the sun is still packing some punch.

We spent the morning on a run/walk tour of campus led by her majesty herself, followed by the first fruit salad in four weeks - devine! The afternoon offered college football, Penn State at Indiana, which was a thoroughly enjoyable show with IU blowing a narrow lead in the dying stages of the fourth quarter. Thrilling football!

Sunday was spent exploring the region around the bubble that is IU. Evidence of this bubble was found in how little the people of Bloomington knew about the area around Bloomington. We found some picturesque spots nearby, made so by the autumb colours and glassy lakes (read: ponds).
We also were almost shot dead when a hunter accidently discharged his rifle in the carpark, and nobody but us batted a eyelid.

That triggerred Monday's activity: presentation on the second ammendment: gun laws. Let's just say there wasn't a lot of logic in the presentation and the sign off note went something like "I need a gun so when the government comes to round us up like Hitler did in WW2 I'll be able to stick up for myself". Riddle me that. Trump away.

Very impressed with felicity's life in the bubble. Plenty of good company and a full plate of activities. Go her!

    Kent Redux and More Gravestones

    April 25 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

This morning we begin our trek back to LaCrosse. We spent the past few days visiting friends and relatives. We were able to spend an afternoon with Ray and Doris Aeschliman. It seems wherever we go we run into people who know Grace or who remember my dad. Just wandering around downtown we'll be stopped to chat by old friends. What a life they'd built here together.

We were also able to explore Kent a bit more. Lots if changes there. The town/gown connection is stronger in both spirit and physical planning. A new campus/ city gateway is inviting from all sides. We particularly enjoyed the Wick Poetry Center and garden connected to Kent State University. At the center of the garden us a large bronze sculpture and small amphitheater for doing readings. The sculpture is connected to a watering system and in the summer there are 9 plants hosting a garden in its crooks and crannies. The newly built KSU Center for Architecture and Environmental Design building is quite an impressive structure too.

On our return drive from Pittsburgh to Kent we stopped by another cemetery in Alliance, Ohio. The Brinker memorials are arranged in a semicircle around a central monument. My great great grandfather August Brinker is interred there. He died at the age of 54 during the great influenza outbreak of 1919. The Brinkers were reportedly seed merchants who shared the business with another family, the VanWarmers. The families also intermarried and shared the central stone, VanWarmer on one side and Brinker on the other. Nit sure about the child sized stone for William Brinker who was born and died in February 1900. He may have been an older brother to my grandfather William G Brinker, or perhaps a cousin.

Last evening we dined with friends and family at a Lebanese restaurant in Hudson Ohio. Uncle Al and his partner Ginger, Cousin Dave and his wife Jill, and friends Dick Leppo and Kay Hensel. Lots of laughs and good company.

    And now we move west...

Josh went for his morning run. We took our time this am. Eggs and venison sausage for breakfast. Then back to the lake. The weather has been beautiful yesterday and today. It was a long travel day. We made it to Wisconsin. We saw a nice sunset. The kids have been great. It took a long time to get through Chicago. Jodi even got a chance to drive the RV in downtown Chicago, rush hour traffic. We stayed at a rest area tonight and back on the road tomorrow.Read more
