    Badlands, South Dakota

    August 10 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Spectacular scenery thru here. Another National Park & /or Indian reservation land. Very poor & very different to look at. Was dark & foggy coming in here, kind of set the tone I thought.

    Mount Rushmore and Minuteman

    October 24, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

How mad or ambitious you would have to be to decide to take up the position of sculpting four heads of some very familiar presidents out of a mountain.
The over achiever Gutzon Borglum gave it a go and didn’t do too bad a job either considering he used jackhammers and dynamite.
Jackhammers you would feel fairly comfortable with on that scale but dynamite, I’de worry you would end up with president no nose.
Anyone who remembers cracker night will remember the preceding weeks before and the unpredictability of the attempts that were made blowing up stuff with bungers, even on that small scale nothing went to plan, many of us still bear the scars.
So we’re impressed, to be able get a likeness on that scale and make sure the four presidents have all their facial features where they should be is remarkable, there is no half an ear or a cracked eyeball lying halfway down the mountain.

These founding fathers could never imagine they nearly got their rock heads blown off by rockets a number of times but if you read the list of the near misses at the Minuteman Missile Historic Site that is what could have happened.
It was clever stuff. One instance was someone put in a training tape of a nuclear attack and every idiot who had their finger on the button thought it was for real.
Another time the Russians early warning system told them the Americans had launched a nuclear attack but luckily that day someone with brains was on duty and delayed retaliation.
He was later highly awarded and at one time he was a guest of the United States where they did a tour of the Minuteman Silos for him, there’s proof Americans don’t get irony. Instead they should have shown him Mount Rushmore and said “there still there because of you”.

    Badlands

    July 8, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Day six: At the beginning of today we visited an old cowboy town near Sioux Falls. A small rebuild village with buffalos as well. At the shop I got nice looking stickers of all states I've been or I will be.
Afterwards we continue to a two hrs ride to an Indian Resort. Just one word: Wow! From now to then the nature changed dramatically. We such crossed a lake and boom! No more green, just ocher gras and an awesome landscape. It looked beautiful!
Then we started our last stage. On this ride we saw about a million ads for Wall Drug. So we just decided to have a look at this. Wall is a cowboy town and the Drug Store sells souvenirs of that.
An Indian told us that they hate Custer and that they celebrate their Independence Day when Custer died. In Wall they glorify him.
    Very interesting history!
The Badland NP we didn't see today at all. We will do it tomorrow's morning before we get to Black Hills.
    - The true roadtrip starts now! 🚗💨

    Wind cave/ Badlands

    October 29, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌬 46 °F

After a night at Custer State Park (Custer ugh), we made the short drive to Wind Cave NP. Unfortunately cave tours don't happen on weekends anymore. But the cool thing about the park is that it's also home to cool things above ground too. We took a nice hike around and saw a million prarie dogs. Then it was off to the Badlands. So many really old rocks. The visitors center talked a lot about all the different kinds of life that used to live here millions of years ago when it was a much different environment. Fossils! We went on a bunch of little hikes where we scrambled up rocks and climbed ladders to get pretty views. It's so windy! Had to stake out tent down really well. We'll see how it holds up over night.

    More adventures tomorrow!

    I90 East

    October 17, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

    Minuteman Missile

    October 16, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

    Morgenwanderung

    June 5, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Read more

    Eine stürmische Nacht

    June 5, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Read more
