    At the Casino

    August 11, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

Caught the shuttle bus to Turning Stone casino, amazed at the number of people playing the slots & tables. No gambling for us, only here to eat BBQ at the Tin Rooster, great food, country music playing & line dancing waiting staff. Great views from the 21st floor of the Tower.Read more

    The Villages at Turning Stone

    August 8, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Great campsite overlooking the fishing pond at RV park at Turning Stone casino. Watching Olympics on TV ... US biased, guess we'll see the Brits if they win Gold !!!

That's more like it... Not a Wal-Mart in sight.

Day 61 Canastota to Herkimer, NY

    August 8 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

47.99 miles, 898 Feet. I love riding on early Sunday mornings. There is generally little traffic and the quiet is very soothing. We once again started out on the Erie Canal Trail for the first 4-5 miles. After that we stayed mostly on USBR 5 as we rode through rural areas with a mix of corn fields and cattle pasture.

As we approached Utica, NY we found ourselves on more urban trail that was paved. Yay! Once we reached the hear off Utica, we rode down Genesee Street and were impressed by the huge old mansions which were mostly in good shape.

It was back to USBR 5 the rest of the way to Herkimer. A new rider Cathy joins us for the rest of the ride to Maine and another Cindy leaves us after the ride tomorrow to Troy (Albany). Tomorrow promises to be a challenging day of almost 90 miles. Tonight we celebrate Clark's birthday.

Day 60 Weedsport to Canastota, NY

    August 7 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 75 °F

54.69 miles, 669 feet. Our route today turned us back onto the trail which looked more like a mowed strip of grass. The trail today was rough and the mosquitoes were huge. The trail paralleled aqueducts with stagnant and putrid water. There was a lovely paved bike trail around Lake Onondaga. Near Syracuse we were back on USBR 5 which is Hwy 31. The shoulders are wide and smooth for the most part.

Most of our group went to a lovely lakeside restaurant on Lake Oneida for dinner. Not too many photos today.

Weedsport? That’s as bad as the name of cousin Jim’s town; Pflugerville. Portland here has a suburb called Boring. Does the town suffer from low self esteem, or the munchies? [Mark Ostertag]

It was originally named Weeds Basin because there is a large turn around on the canal. Weeds was the name of one of the founders. Richard has a cousin who lives in Useful. Place names have an interesting history.

World's Smallest Church - Oneida, NY

    June 28, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Quinn found us another interesting stop. The world's smallest church. It fits two people. It is in the middle of a bog of some sort. We were only able to see it from afar. Still, a good stop. The geese didn't seem to enjoy us interrupting their day.Read more

Day 12 - The Last Leg...

    June 28, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Well, we are in the home stretch! We are only about 5 hours from my parent's house. We can do 5 hours (~320 miles) without blinking!

We slept late and powered up on a great breakfast. The Hampton Inn & Suites Cazenovia had cheese omelettes, French toast sticks, bacon and croissants along with the normal cereals, coffee, make your own waffles and other goodies. My favorite breakfast so far.

The area around our hotel was absolutely beautiful. Very New England like (don't let a New Yorker hear me say that). 😉

Cazenovia, NY - End of Day 11

    June 27, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

    Day 11 Miles: 309.5
    Total Miles: 4,208.2
    States: 15
    Countries: 2

We added New York to our list of states and Canada to our list of countries. We also broke the 4,000 mile mark!

Our hotel was in the middle of nowhere. However, it was awesome! Because of the secluded location, we were able to get a better room for a much cheaper price. The area is also very beautiful. Located in Madison County, Cazenovia and the surrounding towns are very picturesque.

We are now spoiled. It's like flying first class. How can we go back to cramped hotel rooms?

This hotel offered a digital key. Jenn was able to open our room, the pool and workout center from her phone! The kids and I geeked out over that. 😁
