    California Dreamin'

July 26, 2017 in the United States

The pilgrimage has come to an end and after waking up next to my Mickey Mouse ears it was time for me to drive back north to repatriate with my travel b companion and return the hire car in San Francisco. Originally I had a crazy idea that I'd road trip via Yosemite. It transpired this wasn't a very viable option and so I decided to cruise back up the 1 as far as I could then joining the 101 before I hit the closures at Big Sur again.

I said farewell to my Air BnB hosts and nearly cried when Dom said he would have taken me as his guest to a BAFTA screening last night had I not been at Disneyland. Dammit!

Driving down Sunset Boulevard I shed a small tear. Hollywood moved me far more than I had ever anticipated and has reaffirmed my ambitions as a filmmaker. I would need to find a way to get back here more permanently one day. I have a lot of work to do first but its certainly a wonderful feeling to see your dreams so clearly again and almost touch them.

After passing the mansions of Beverly Hills and picking up the 1 on the coast my first pitstop was Malibu Pier. I had a brief walk on the beach but found the white sand too hot underfoot to be comfortable and I found myself hopping about like a loon. The temperatures were in the high 20s/early 30s again. The Pier was very charming and I'm really glad I stopped.

Flora, Susan and I then turned up the tunes and cruised up the 1 all the way to Cambria where we enjoyed our last California Sunset before finding a Motel 6 to spend the night. I had been severely tempted to stay in the Madonna Inn with its quirky individually styled rooms and pink restaurant but it was a little out of my price range and a bit too far south. After travelling over 250 miles with another 200 to do in the morning I hit the hay and enjoyed a good night's rest.

    Magical Malibu

August 22, 2017 in the United States

We arrived in Malibu on Saturday from Ventura. We didn't have much time to explore the area after our arrival but we did follow a trail leading from our campground down to the ocean beach and went for a swim before dinner. After dinner we played some ping pong in the games room.

Sunday we drove the short distance into Santa Monica. We started with a nice walk along the amazing sandy beach to the famous pier. From there up the hill to the shopping promenade where the kids bought a few more items of clothing. We had an excellent lunch at The Crepe Cafe located in the heart of the action along the promenade. After a little more shopping we walked back to our truck and got into our swim gear. The sand and sea were incredible! Huge area of nothing but fine sand. The water was very warm. We then returned to the campground to make dinner.

Monday we drove to Six Flags Magic Mountain Amusement Park. Huge area with 16 roller coasters alone! Longest ride in NA, highest loop and all sorts of claims to fame. Not for me, but the rest of the family sure loved them. I was happy with The Scrambler and The Justice League where I got to ride a flying vehicle and shoot a laser gun at The Joker and other evil villains threatening to destroy Metropolis.

Today was our last day in Malibu. We drove down to Venice Beach to experience the boardwalk and spend a relaxing time on the beach. You hear a lot about Venice Beach and we weren't disappointed. All kinds of eclectic people and shops on the boardwalk and another beautiful California beach.

    Malibu

November 20, 2015 in the United States

When we saw that Malibu was on our route into Los Angeles, we were excited to go through such an iconic place on California's coast, but we honestly didn't quite know what to expect. The scenery didn't disappoint - the sweeping coastline and the constrasting colours of the land meeting the water were stunning. As a place, however, it wasn't quite what we had expected with no 'town' feel, just many extravagant houses lining the water's edge and the hillsides and the odd store or restaurant here or there. One thing that did stand out for us, though, was some delicous ice cream (maybe my favourite of the trip so far?!?), and that always makes us like a place more!Read more

    Malibu

August 21, 2016 in the United States

    4.Tag 3.Stop
