Day 3 Simi Hills, Reagan Museum

      January 19, 2020 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

Today we left Santa Monica and drove to Simi Hills for the Meeting. We were warmly welcomed by Jeff and Kellie Gelineau. Darren gave the exhort. We also met Jason and Ruth Hensley, Bonnie Somerville and Felicity Styles. MJ Styles actually flew from Michigan to meet up with us (mainly Rose) and is also staying with us at Anaheim and coming to Disneyland. Simi Hills had lunch at the hall due to an afternoon business meeting and Jeff Gelineau kindly bought us all Chinese which we had at their lovely hall.

Jeremy is driving a 12 seater van with us all in it and he is doing remarkably well with driving on the right hand side of the road.

Not far from the hall is the Ronald Reagan Museum so this was our next stop. It was quite fascinating. Americans have such a respect for their Presidents (mostly) which is very refreshing for Aussies. Ronnie had a very interesting life being an actor in his early life. He also was responsible for improving relations with Russia and bringing the Cold War to an end, uttering the famous words “Mr Gorbachev tear down this wall”. He also survived an assasination attempt. Nancy was a smart and beautiful woman who, when she was criticised by the press for the cost of her wardrobe put together an outfit from second hand shops and performed a song about it.

There is also an Airforce One plane there which we could walk through.

There was also an interesting Egyptian exhibit there with artefacts brought up from the bottom of the sea from two cities at the Nile Delta which had slipped into the sea.

We then drove to Anaheim and are staying at a hotel across the road from Disneyland which we will go to tomorrow.

      Day 4 Disneyland

      January 20, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Today we had a big day at Disneyland at Anaheim. This is the original Disneyland. We were up early to meet Matt, Leah, Riley, Isla, Annie and Elliott at the gates at 8am.

After going through security and the entry gates, we found it all a bit overwhelming and weren’t sure where to start so we started with breakfast at a cafe!

We found we were too big a group to go around together so Daz and I did our own thing which was a bit nerdy compared to all those who wanted to go on the exciting rides. Rose had organised some fast passes so for some of the rides they were able to fast track the queues which were up to an hour long.

Daz and I went on a train around the whole park to get the layout, watched a hologram of the life of Abraham Lincoln, watched a dueling pianos show twice (once with Dad and Ruth who we met up with and recommended it to), went on a boat that was a replica of the Colombia that explored the rivers of America, ate churros, fairy floss, corn dogs and other delights, checked out the Star Wars section of Tomorrowland especially for Michelle Kirkwood, even watched some highlights from all the Star Wars movies, occasionally met up with the rest of the group who were doing more exciting things such as Space Mountain and Splash Mountain.

We thought there was going to be a Parade at 9pm but that didn’t eventuate. The day finished with a laser and firework show over the Enchanted Castle at 9.30pm and Daz and Jem had final churros then we walked back to our hotel across the road ready to crash into bed.

Tomorrow we say goodbye to MJ who spent the day with us and drive to San Diego.

      I’m Soarin’

      October 6, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

After 3 back to back park assaults it was time today to really throttle back and enjoy California Adventure at our leisure, not working to a ride schedule. This meant entering the park through our exclusive Grand Californian Hotel entrance just after 9am, then seeing which rides had short(ish) queues as we sauntered past.

We didn’t have to walk far before the luck ‘o’ the Irish smiled upon me. This first took the shape of a 20 minute queue for Soarin’ Over California. We then decided to try the single ride line for Radiator Springs Racers in Cars Land. This was virtually a walk on, and even better today, the cloud cover hung around longer than usual, meaning the temperatures were really comfortable, hovering in the early 20’s.

Even though this was a take it easy day, of course I was still monitoring ride times on the Disneyland app, which meant I noticed when Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout dropped from a 60 to just a 20 minute standby time. With the fate of the Galaxy at stake I had to scuttle over to the ride and line up.

This is such a good ride, possibly my favourite in California Adventure! I was giggling like a demented lunatic the whole ride, and everyone in our ride vehicle clapped at the end.

Exiting Mission Breakout we decided to try out something new at California Adventure and rode the Red Car trolley from Guardians to Buena Vista street and return.

Naturally all of this excitement worked up an appetite, so for the first time in 20 years I decided to try Arby’s again, because apparently, ‘they have the meats’. Google Maps revealed that the closest Arby’s location was two kilometres away. This equation worked for me, as about five k’s of walking would burn off about five curly fries, so off I toddled.

One delicious Philly cheesesteak sandwich and curly fries latter I stumbled out of Arby’s in a meat coma and sweated my way back to the air conditioned sanctuary of the hotel, as the sun had suddenly remembered it was shining on California, and must therefore try to incinerate us.

Tonight is our last night in the wallet eating opulence of the Grand Californian, before we checkout tomorrow and head for our third hotel of the trip, after picking up my EV rental tomorrow. But tonight we dine, at The Cheescake Factory. Huzzah!!!

      Disneyland Day 3

      January 17 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

So the parks defeated me today, but 5:20 pm I was all parked out, my feet were too sore to contemplate a return visit.

On the positive side we got through all the rides we wanted to do, bar one which kept going offline - Radiators Springs Racer, it came online just as we were heading off for our afternoon break, so we took a punt and decided to stay and try to get on. Unfortunately just as our ride time was approaching it went offline again, by this time I’d had enough and we decided to call it a day.

In the morning we started off at The Adventure Park and got through all the rides we wanted to including the Web Slinger ride that went offline just as we were about to ride

      Rides:

      Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters (Cars)
      Pixar Pal-A-Round (swinging Ferris wheel)
      Emotional Whirlwind (Inside Out)
      Silly Symphony Swings
      Jumpin’ Jellyfish
      Golden Zephyr

Then it was time to head across to Disneyland, where we had 1 big ticket ride, Space Mountain, and a few smaller rides.

      Rides:

      Monorail
      Snow Whites Enchanted Wish
      Space Mountain
      Alice in Wonderland
      Mad Tea Party
      Peter Pan’s Flight

And that’s a wrap for Disneyland, on the way back to the hotel saw the cutest Husky riding on the back of a motorcycle. Tomorrow is a rest and relax day, with Friday being Universal Studios

      California Adventure Park

      April 8, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Today was a great day at Disney's California Adventure Park. We started off later than originally attended as the jet lag set in the kids didn't go to bed until 1:20am, so they slept in a bit longer. It was a bit more relaxed and less crowded than Disney.

We had lovley chats with people in line and Brandon makes friends everywhere. We even got tips on how to use the "fast pass" and "parents pass" correctly as we didn't use it in Disneyland. Brandon got to go on the grizzly bear ride twice as well as Guardians of the Galaxy.

We even saw the Frozen 1 hour stage show which was amazing. The set design, movement, digital effects crammed with all the music from the movie is a must see.

It was another late night but it was a great family fun day..

      Notes:
Having Inara wear shoes with lights was great and good for all the rides that are dark when waiting on line
Not sure if bunk beds was worth it as it was musical beds with the bunk beds and our king bed.

      Disneyland

      December 18, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Up early, down for breakfast by 6.30am. Full of families with young kids, don't they sleep in?! At Disneyland by 8am. We were able to walk onto most rides without waiting. I did every ride with the kids so far, had lots of fun. Disney's attention to detail is unbelievable and the vivid colours are beautiful. We had good day. We planned to come home early afternoon for a rest but we ended up watching the parade. While waiting for the parade, it was fun people watching. We tried a few Disney snacks- Mickey Mouse Beignets and Dole Whip. The Beignets were yummy, Kellie thought they tasted like Krispy Kreme donuts without the glaze. The dole whip was a pineapple flavoured soft serve, we shared this one. It was ok but probably wouldn't get it again. It ended up being after 4pm when we left. We wanted some salad veggies and looking on the map some groceries stores not too far. Well their blocks are a lot bigger than ours it ended up a couple of k's walk. A few groceries & a couple of ugly sweaters later we called an Uber. We are heading back later for fireworks and a laser light show.Read more

      Disney day 2

      December 20, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Even though we had over 9hrs sleep still hard to drag ourselves out of bed. Brodie made it to breakfast today after Kellie talking about the amazing waffles. We had an early pass to today, not sure if it was worth getting out of bed for as some of the rides were temporarily closed and only 2 lands open for early morning. Once you get there you forget that it was a struggle to get out of bed. We did Fantasyland on our early pass as this is more small kid orientated. Realise how dark fairytales are and scary. Not sure how small kids go on these rides. I skipped Space mountain as I didn't like it in Paris, kids a bit disappointed, Paris a lot better. Did a few rides, a lot busier today and a lot more ride breakdowns. We left about 1.30pm to go home for lunch and rest, before going back tonight.
I would give anything for a decent cup of coffee. I wished I had bought some instant coffee with me because that is better than what they drink here.
