Weiter gings auf dem Weg nach New Haven mit einem kurzen Stop beim Clinton Crossing Premium Outlet. Von Lindt Schokolade über Schmuck und Parfum bis hin zu Schuhen gab's alles was das Herz begehrt. Pour moi gab's 4 Paar Schuhe, Jana brauchte nix. Somit war der Drops recht schnell gelutscht.Read more

    Day 3. Branford to Clinton

    June 24, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

And we're in. Not as much to do on the route today, but the scenery was really pretty. Lots of colonial era buildings in the cute little towns we went through. Listened to a few podcasts (Planet Money) and some music (free trial of Apple Music) along the way. Started out in pouring rain, which meant we got to pull out the raincoats. Sadly, the coat is plenty big enough to cover the full pack and the sides of the person holding it, but not also the front of that person. Rain didn't last long, though. We've been a bit ahead of schedule, so tomorrow we'll carve out time to visit a laundromat and only have 10 miles planned. Today's Motel (Clinton Motel) is perfectly nice, and we've found the Red Sox game on TV, so we're settled.Read more

Useful item for long walks: earbud splitter. We're particularly liking Malcolm Gladwell's podcast, "Revisionist History." Sun hats are also very useful.

We do look a bit incongruous with our hats, hiking shoes, and big backpack. Not your typical Rt 1 garb.Read more

    Clinton to Old Saybrook

    June 25, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Short day today to rest a bit. More marshland, pretty scenery, and not a whole lot else. We did see a whole bunch of three wheeled, open topped cars (? ATV's ? Grown up GoKarts?) today and yesterday. Seems to be the official car of the CT shore. We're pretty happy to just walk, eat, and read/play games on phones, though. We're in a Quality Inn, where we've done our first load of laundry. Sadly, no laundry soap. I added a bunch of hand soap from the bathroom, washed it on hot and crossed my fingers. The came out at least smelling quite clean, which was a substantial improvement. Pizza sauce stains remain. Got take sandwiches and salad from the restaurant across the street... no forks. Salad works ok as finger food. Tomorrow we have another 17 miler, heading to New London. 🙂Read more

    More about the castle

    September 15, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Mr. Gillette designed the home while he lived on his house boat, Aunt Polly, and decided on the location of the castle because of the great view it provided. He also made an addition to the castle to include a gallery, library, and separate quarters for his family. I learned all this by constantly asking questions since the admission to the castle did not include a guided tour.Read more

    Old Saybrook, Jumpy Fish

    September 29, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We were going to spend a few more days reveling in Block Island but there was a weeks worth of rain in the weeks forecast and with the only good wind to bring us into the Long Island Sound being on a Monday… we left early.
En route we were pleasantly surprised to make friends with the local navy submarine (of Groton possibly?). And we timed the current perfectly for Race Point and got a 3 knot turbocharge! We flew into Old Saybrook and settled into a free mooring field and very well protected from the prevailing Northerly winds. I’ll let the pictures do the talking…
The anchorage was a shallow protected marshland and during low tide all you could hear was the jumping of fish flopping out of the water. It sounded like rain from below. There goes the peace and silence.
And then there were these (Ospreys) jerks! Amazing hunters but loved to try and perch themselves ontop of your newly installed windex. …you guessed it… one of these guys broke our windex.
