      Zion National Park

      Today we are in the Zion National Park in the magnificent state of Utah. Like Monument Valley yesterday, Zion is devastatingly beautiful. On good advice we hired e-bikes and rode the entire scenic drive and it was a fantastic experience. In Utah, you can only be served alcohol with food by law, but you don’t need alcohol to be intoxicated by the ridiculous beauty all around you here in Zion!Read more

      Zion Nationalpark

      Weiter ging es auf unserem Weg nach las Vegas über denZion-Nationalpark. Der NP ist ein Naturschutzgebiet im südwestlichen Utah, gut 250 km nordöstlich von Las Vegas und knapp 150 km vom Bryce entfernt und zeichnet sich durch die steilen roten Klippen aus.
      In Springdale direkt am Park liegt unser Hotel.
      Wir ließen es langsam angehen und erholten uns am ersten Tag erstmal am Pool und Abends gingen wir noch ins hiesige Bamboo Chinese Restaurant. (Das schlechteste Essen ever das ich je bekommen habe).
      Das Frühstück am nächsten Tag war dafür ganz ok für amerikanische Verhältnisse 😀.
      Danach machten wir uns auf, den Zion zu erkunden. Wir machten zwei kleinere Wanderungen. Das Besondere am Zion National Park ist, dass man nicht wie bei anderen National Parks nur von oben in den Canyon guckt, sondern das man im Canyon selber wandern kann
      Der Zion Canyon Scenic Drive führt quer durch den Hauptbereich des Nationalparks und zu Waldwegen am Virgin River die sehr schön zum wandern sind. Der Park war sehr voll und so sind wir nach unseren Wanderungen wieder zum Hotel zurück um uns ein letztes Mal am Pool zu erholen bevor wir weiter nach Las Vegas fahren.      Read more

      Day 23

      Zion National Park

      April 20 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

      Auch wenn wir uns wiederholen, aber wir starteten wieder mit einem Frühstück draussen an der Sonne. Danach stand wieder einmal eine kleine Einkaufstour, sowie ein Unterkunftswechsel an. Obwohl wir im Gebiet des Zion NP blieben, wartete eine besondere Unterkunft auf uns, auf welche wir alle sehr gespannt waren. Ein Zeltdorf mitten in der Wildnis, jedoch mit allem was eben ein Hotel so braucht. Beim einchecken erfuhren wir, dass am Abend Livemusik unter freiem Himmel stattfinden soll und so entschieden wir uns für ein Znacht im Zeltdorf. Vorher ging’s aber nochmals ins Zentrum. Da heute im Nationalpark „free entry“ war, hatte es überall recht viele Leute und wir konnten uns vorstellen, wie es wohl im Sommer sein muss!       Last day in Springdale

      We woke up and had breakfast (got it as breakfast to go this time, didn’t want to deal with the rude waiter) and made our way to Zion to do the Scenic Drive and stop at some trails to do some exploring.

      First stop was the visitors centre to have a look around. While we were there we saw that the Scenic Drive had been closed as there were too many cars on the road and in the parking lots. We decided to do the other road on the outskirts of the park and when we got back down to the entrance to the drive we thought surely it would be open. Unfortunately it wasn’t so we came back to the visitors centre, did a little walk along the Virgin River before going on a drive to the other side of town and back to the hotel for lunch.

      After a bit of a relax, we did a huge walk around town, going into the residential areas to see where everyone lives. We loved this.

      While Springdale is a beautiful township surrounded by the rock walls of the National Park, and the National Park has some spectacular scenery, it has been our least favourite places to visit due to not being able to see things. It just isn’t set out very well I don’t think and it’s so much busier than everywhere we have been but I think that is because of its locality to Vegas.

      Anyway we can say we have been and explored. Probably not a place we would come back to again.

      Next stop Vegas tomorrow with a stop off at Hoover Dam. We meet up with Kenzie in Vegas to continue our adventure through Vegas and San Francisco.      Read more

      Day 31

      Exploring Springdale

      Today we decided that we would explore the township of Springdale. We got up and ready to go to our free breakfast at the Porter’s Restaurant which is part of the complex we are staying.

      I had read reviews of the breakfasts and all were positive however we both weren’t that impressed with our meals nor the service. We understand that wait staff work on tips however when it is included in your room fee we do not believe that, unless the service is amazing, tipping should be expected. As such, as the service was not the best (I asked for no breakfast potatoes or bread as both had gluten and when I got my meal you could see where the breakfast potatoes were and been strapped off plus some were still on my plate and there was bread) and the waiter was very rude, we didn’t give a tip. We put our vouchers in the folder and walked out. Well the waiter chased us into another shop demanding a tip! We will be getting breakfast to go tomorrow!

      We came back to our room and I did our blog from the yesterday and then we sorted our bags ready to hand the car back in 2 days when we get to Vegas. By this time I wasn’t feeling the best, there must have been some gluten in my breakfast. Therefore most of the day was spent near our room as I couldn’t be too far away from a restroom.

      There is a little farm which is part of Bumbleberry Inn where we are staying, so of course I had to go and talk to all the animals this morning.

      When I started to feel better and game to be away from a restroom, we did a quick trip up into the scenic drive of the National Park to see where we will stop off and explore tomorrow. We went for walk up to the mouth of the Narrows. As it was very overcast, the photos just don’t have the pop they need.

      Der Zion Nationalpark ist gigantisch. Riesen Felswände und Schluchten. Der Ort Springdale gefällt uns hervorragend. Ein kleiner Ort mitten in den Bergen. Er ist nicht zu gross aber man hat alles und zudem einen super Ausblick direkt aus der Unterkunft. Heute geht es weiter nach Vegas!!Read more

      Wir entschuldigen uns, es gibt erneut viele Fotos von farbigen Felsen! :-) Noch haben wir nicht genug davon, auch wenn sich die Szenerie bald ändern wird. Ein persönliches und lang geplantes Highlight stand noch auf dem Programm: Die White Pocket Übernachtungstour. Vor allem für Fotografen ist diese Tour perfekt, da die schönen Lichtverhältnisse bei Sonnenauf- und untergang miterlebt werden können. Normalerweise ist man zu diesen Zeiten bereits wieder weg von dieser herrlichen Kulisse, denn die Anfahrt dauert ca. 2,5 Stunden. Zudem sind die Strassen dahin sehr schwierig zu befahren. 2 Asiaten hatten ihren Miet-SUV im tiefen Sand fest gebuddelt und den „Weg“ blockiert. Unser Guide wusste jedoch was zu tun ist: Etwas Luft aus den Reifen raus und ein paar Männer, welche halfen das Auto anzuschieben. Die ganze Tour war also auch noch etwas Adventure. Abendessen im Dunkeln, gemütliches Sitzen am Lagerfeuer, schlafen im Zelt. Unser Zelt war 2,5m über Boden auf einem Anhänger installiert, auch mal cool. Der logistische Aufwand ist immens: Für unsere 10-köpfige Gruppe musste alles dorthin und wieder zurück gefahren werden, sogar das portable Mini-WC. :-)
      So ging die sehr eindrückliche Woche in der Region um Kanab zu Ende und wir fuhren weiter in den Zion National Park. Die Menschenmassen dort erdrückten uns beinahe, das pure Gegenteil also. Über 3 Millionen Besucher pro Jahr hat der Park bereits. Gute Planung ist daher noch wichtiger damit man nicht nur mit der Herde mitschwimmt… Wir jedenfalls sind nun nach St. George weitergezogen, da das Memorial Day Weekend bevorsteht und GANZ Amerika auf den Beinen ist. Auch da sind die Hotels gut gefüllt, aber wir hoffen, dass die kleineren State Parks in der Region etwas weniger Besucher anziehen. We will see.      Read more

      Ein Wort zu: Blogbeiträge schreiben

      Es macht doch mehr Arbeit als gedacht, fast täglich die Fotos von der Kamera zu kopieren, auszusortieren, für den Beitrag auszuwählen, zu verkleinern und dazu noch den Text zu schreiben inklusive gelegentlicher Nachrecherche.
      Trotzdem sind wir sehr froh, dass wir das durchziehen. Zum einen hätten wir uns wohl kaum nach dem Urlaub hingesetzt, um tausende Bilder duchzugucken. Zum anderen haben wir damit nicht nur ein virtuelles Fotoalbum zusammengestellt, sondern auch ein kleines Reisetagebuch mit detaillierten Beschreibungen frisch aus dem Gedächtnis.
      Außerdem bekommt ihr fast live mit, was wir erleben und euch wie auch uns bleiben dutzende stundenlange Fotovorführungen erspart. 😉      Read more

It was not that great since you can not explore something without any other people and the prices just tripped the last 3 month. Tried to rent ebikes but 300 dollar a day was too much for us.       Springdale ist ein netter kleiner Ort am Anfang des Zion Nationalparks. Und die legendäre Pinoneer-Lodge war unser standesgemäßes Zuhause für eine Nacht.
      Die Lodge stammt noch aus der alten Westernzeit und wurde 1862 gebaut. Die Lage ist gut, mitten im Ort und es gibt auch Shuttlebusse zum Zion.
      Wir freuten uns über die etwas niedrigeren Temperaturen und gingen ins Oscars zum Steak- oder Spareribbs-Essen und anschließend auf ein-zwei-drei Bierchen die wir uns heute so richtig verdient hatten.      Read more
