      Las Cruces to Texas

      January 13, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 4 °C

We Left Las Cruces and headed to Davis Mountains State Park - deep in Western Texas. Why you might ask. One word - Marfa. We had heard of Marfa on our way to California earlier in December, and then our good friend Vince was going there - so we figured - better see it now because who knows when we’ll be this way again, etc etc. All we knew about Marfa was that it was a mecca for art installations and that “art installation” is sometimes considered a vulgar expression. We ended up going to Davis Mountains State Park because that is the closest state park to Marfa.

I took some ordinary shots of landscape between Las Cruces and the Davis Mountains of Western Texas just trying to convey the vastness of Texas. Some are in my previous blog post and some I hope will be with this one. Beautiful light, beautiful expanses of land. Texas continues to amaze.

We got to the State Park at a beautiful time of the day - the magic hour in movie parlance - and set up camp for the night. By the way, this State Park is beautiful and as usual, we paid about $25.00 a night to stay. The odd animal in this park is a Javalina, which looks like a boar but is called a peccary and is not in the pig family

As we set up camp a family came by and told us about the McDonald Observatory which was just up the road, and something happening that night called a “Star Party.” The Observatory is affiliated with the University of Texas at Austin and is located at the top of one of the Davis Mountain Peaks. We went to an early twilight show, in addition to the “Star Party.” The earlier show was over my head, a grad student type talking about “plane of the ecliptic” and reporting there were actually 13 zodiac signs - the 13th one being Ophiuchus. I left the lecture and took the sunset picture below. At 7:00 we went to the Star Party and that was lovely. The Observatory takes light pollution very seriously - kids with those sneakers that make light had to get masking tape to put over their sneaks. Our lecturer was knowledgeable and accessible and we saw some great cosmic sites but the piece de resistance of the evening was going around to the various telescopes set up and seeing what was on the menu for this night. We went to two and saw nebulae and Uranus!

The next morning we drove the twenty miles to explore Marfa. Marfa owes its fame to Donald Judd, an artist who worked from the forties to the beginning of the nineties. I thought I had read somewhere that Judd first became familiar with Marfa due to being stationed there, there used to be an Army base here, but have not been able to confirm that. He worked in many different mediums but what we went to see in Marfa were his concrete structures.

I think Judd may have been one of the first artists to have others construct his work and he defended this practice arguing that methods should not matter as long as the results create art. He also advocated for permanent installations for his work and that of others believing that temporary exhibitions, being designed by curators for the public, “placed the art itself in the background, ultimately degrading it due to incompetency or incomprehension.” That’s a quote from Wikipedia! Judd rented his first house in Marfa, which is really truly in the middle of nowhere, in 1971 in part to have space for his art to be permanently displayed. Over the years he bought thousands of acres, some of them from the Army, and used all of them for various purposes related to his art, and of course, living space. Some of these lands are now managed by the the Chinati Foundation whose purpose is to keep art in the space in which it was created. Other artists are housed here as well, but we focused on Judd.

A note on the town of Marfa itself: I don’t know what we expected but Marfa surprised us. It was on the whole very unprepossessing and hard to figure out. It is very underdeveloped except for some chichi hotels and stores which look crazily out of place. We did manage to find a really good place to have breakfast and I, of course, captured the food below.

From Marfa we drove to Austin where we had mundane business things to take care of - car’s 12,000 mile checkup, etc. We did many of the same things we did in Austin on our first visit with the exception that we tried a different bbq place, The Salt Lick, located in Driftwood, Texas. You have to go to a place like that just because of the name, right? We left Austin after two nights to visit Galveston, a town that for some unclear reason I have aways wanted to see. Fortunately Harry agreed!

    • More Friends

      March 14, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

I absolutely LOVE that I am seeing so many of my friends on this leg of my trip! But first things first.

I rolled out of Micki's at 08:00 this morning in 38°F, but the roads were dry and the sun was shining. I squiggled to several dealerships, then arrived in Panama City Beach to see Molly. I forgot about going back to Central Time, so she was still at work when I got to town. So I went to the beach by Tussell-Fields Pier

I had a scoop of creamy, chocolatey, coconutty heaven from Kilwins Ice Cream and Fudge. Ohhh my, it was sooo good. I stood on the boardwalk/sidewalk overlooking the beach getting weird looks because I was still in my leathers, but I didn't care. The sun was warm and the ice cream was cold. It was a great 30 minutes.

Then I was off to see Molly. We met in Germany and I hadn't seen her since 2015. After a short chat and a couple of hugs, I left to see another friend, two actually; they're married.

I also met Chris and Lauren in Germany, and Chris and I were in Afghanistan together in 2017. I was surprised to be greeted by Brewster, Lauren's 14-year-old Australian Shepherd, whom I also knew in Germany. It is very possible he remembered me because she said he started acting like a pup while I was there. Aaww 🤗.

I was also so happy to finally meet their beautiful five-year-old daughter Annabelle and their foster daughter Tamaya. Despite both Chris and Lauren being active duty Air Force, they have opened their home and hearts for foster children. I don't know how they do it, but they do. I am very lucky to have these amazing people call me friend. And, yes, I forgot to take a selfie with them 🤦. Love you both so much!

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️

      Beach Day

      February 24 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

It's our last day in Florida so what else to do than go to the beach ⛱️. It was supposed to be 70 and sunny which it was but with 25 mph winds. There were red flags when we got there including no swimming, but soon changed to yellow. We had our beach umbrella blocking the cold wind while the blowing sand exfoliated both of us. Tim flew his new kite, I think he was almost airborne. We are still warming up.Read more

      3 Rivers to Rocky Bayou

      April 5, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

Had coffee, walked, slowly packed up then left at 12:00 central time.
Got to Niceville at 2:00 and went to Walmart, looked for and found the better Bushnell E-series binoculars. Drove to Rocky Bayou S.P. which is very nice. Lots are large with a good 30' of woods in between. Walked the dogs down to the water and then had spaghetti for dinner. I should never have eaten the snickers and lemon cake on top of it cuz I was uptill 3:30 with a rattling cough from aspirating bile. Tried sleeping in the recliner but it wasn't comfortable. Finally got back in bed around 4 a.m.Read more

      Waterfront

      February 23 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Played tourist today and explored the Destin Harbor Boardwalk. Lots of cute shops, Tim got a new kite for tomorrow. Some nice boats in harbor. Drove to Miramar Beach. The sand here is beautiful, when they say it's like white sugar it is. Red flag was out today and the waves were pretty big. Stuck my toes in the water and it was cold. The beach was full of jellyfish, some were really big. Relaxed by the water at the campground. Watched a osprey fly by with a huge fish in his talons.Read more

    • Day 13

      It's Cold in Florida!

      April 1, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

After my Tallahassee stop, I continued West, eventually picking up US-98, on to Panama City Beach and then the Fort Walton Beach area. I got to see a couple of friends from my time in Georgia that I haven't seen since 2010. Too long, but great to catch up in person versus Facebook. (But I forgot to take a picture ☹️.)

I treated myself to a hotel across the highway from the beach on Okaloosa Island. Luckily, I was off the bike and in the beachfront restaurant before the rain came. Wow! What a storm!

I woke up this morning really cold. Yesterday was 90°F, but this morning it was 50! So I put on just about all of my clothes and left the hotel at 10:00. Brrr! the wind chill was crazy cold!

Now I'm having lunch with a retired military buddy who I knew in Germany. Small world!

So long [for now], and thanks for all the fish! ✌️

Left Florida and headed to Alabama. Took some pics of the water tower that was close to our campground in Destin, it was very unusual. Passed the C130's at Hurlburt. Didn't get a picture, but the overpasses in Pensacola had Blue Angels on them. Our campground is on Mobile Bay and the campsites are huge. Had a beautiful sunset for our first night hereRead more
