      Da St Louis a Miami Okla

      Iniziamo questo terzo giorno di route con un breve tour della old St Louis, così ci dirigiamo lungo il fiume Mississipi, che oltrepassa la città, e poi andiamo in un osservatorio al di là del fiume, da cui si può ammirare lo skyline della città. Usciamo dalla city e ci immergiamo nei quartieri periferici della città, tutti siamo concordi che sono molto graziosi e vivibili, al contrario dei quartieri centrali dove si tocca con mano il degrado della città con sporcizia, senzatetto e resti di focolari improvvisati.
      Riprendiamo la route 66 e dopo un’ora di strada ci fermiamo in un grazioso locale di St Clair, sempre nel Missouri, per fare colazione a base di american coffee e avocado toast; qui ci rendiamo conto che la temperatura esterna è in aumento mano a mano che andiamo verso sud. I kilomentri da percorrere oggi sono molti ma facciamo una tappa ad Uranus, perché siamo attirati da una sorta di villaggio dei balocchi a tema route 66 con ludiche attrazioni, shops e musica: una trappola per turisti nel pieno senso del termine.
      Il paesaggio di oggi è diverso rispetto a quello di ieri, infatti è prevalentemente collinare con ranch e allevamenti, intervallato da piccole cittadine con i soliti quartieri.
      Nella tappa di oggi abbiamo il piacere di percorrere un piccolo tratto in Kansas e facciamo una tappa a Galena: iconica città che ha ispirato i registi di Cars e dove sono presenti le riproduzioni delle macchine dell’omonimo film, qui fa davvero molto caldo nonostante sia tardo pomeriggio.
      Dopo più di 500 km percorsi, raggiungiamo la meta: Miami in Oklahoma, dove abbiamo prenotato in un tipico motel lungo la strada principale della città per la notte. Ci rinfreschiamo con molto piacere e poi usciamo per cena. Prendiamo la macchina e percorriamo la strada principale della cittadina che è caratterizzata da fast food e negozi con grandi insegne luminose, purtroppo però alle 21 è tutto chiuso e ci riversiamo dentro il McDonald che è l’unico locale aperto. Dopo cena facciamo un tour per i quartieri della città, dove incontriamo un gruppo di cerbiatti che non sembrano impauriti dalla nostra auto.      Read more

      Day 6

      Da Miami Okla a Oklahoma city

      Dopo alcuni giorni di viaggio in macchina e di cibo pesante, alcuni di noi sentono l’esigenza di fare un po’ di attività fisica: Elisa sceglie di fare una sessione di yoga, mentre Alessandro, Martina e Francesca optano per una corsa che permette di visitare i quartieri della città che si stanno risvegliando.
      Intorno alle 7.30 lasciamo il motel e andiamo a fare colazione allo Zack Café dove veniamo accolti da una signora molto cordiale. Facciamo una colazione molto buona e abbondante e assaggiamo i famosi “gravy biscuits”: biscotti dolci ricoperti da una salsa al latte e sugo di carne, agli americani sembrano piacere molto, a noi non sono piaciuti per niente.
      La tappa di oggi è corta e infatti facciamo un’unica sosta alla “Blue whale”, che è un monumento a forma di balena posizionato sopra un piccolo laghetto artificiale.
      Sono le 16 e arriviamo ad Oklahoma city, raggiungiamo l’hotel, scendiamo dalla macchina, la temperatura è torrida e vedere davanti al nostro hotel una piscina ci sembra un miraggio. Facciamo il check-in e ci tuffiamo in acqua per rinfrescarci. Intorno alle 18 andiamo in centro per fare aperitivo al Bricktown brevery, un pub molto grande dove producono artigianalmente la birra, che i nostri esperti birrai Alessandro, Liubi e Nicola degustano e giudicano con molta maestria, anche se non sono del tutto d’accordo su quale sia la migliore. Alcuni di noi si concedono un hamburger, mentre i nostri mastri birrai preferiscono evitare la cena e continuare la loro degustazione in un’altra sala del pub.
      Per Martina, Alessandro e Andrea la serata finisce qui, mentre il resto del gruppo non ha sonno e si infila al Coyote ugly, un pub famoso per i suoi body shots. Qui la serata continua e ci scappa leggermente di mano, infatti la barista decide che Nicola ha bevuto troppo e non potrà più ordinare nulla per il resto della serata, beviamo ancora qualche bicchiere e poi la situazione degenera definitivamente e siamo letteralmente buttati fuori dal locale. Secondo la nostra concezione non c’era alcun motivo per essere buttati fuori, eravamo semplicemente un gruppo di amici che bevevano e si divertivano, con nostro rammarico però abbiamo potuto constatare che nei pub americani questo modo di divertirsi non è concesso.       Kayak-Pizza-Beer

      Heute stand eine Kayaktour mit der ganzen Family von Jim Bob auf dem Programm. Wir mussten natürlich zuerst wieder im Walmart Equipment kaufen, weil unser Gepäck noch nicht angekommen ist😅. Nach 1 1/2h Stunden kamen wir in Oklahoma am Mountain Fork River an. Von dort machten wir eine schöne Tour den Fluss hinunter. Durch die Steine gab es überall kleine Wasserfälle welche wir runterpadeln konnten. Silvan fiel dabei zweimal ins Wasser, Barbara blieb mehr oder weniger trocken.
      Nach der Kayaktour gingen wir in eine Pizzeria um eine richtig amerikanische Pizza mit viel Rand und dickem Boden zu essen. Sie war sehr lecker und sehr riesig😋🍕. Zun Trinken gab Bier und ein Pear Cider, welches sehr lecker war.🍻
      Den Abend verbrachten wir anschliessend am Pool Zuhause bei Jim Bob mit chillen und lesen.      Read more

      Joplin - Oklahoma

      Heute morgen sind wir gleich bei Sonnenaufgang und 26 Grad gestartet. Auf unserem Weg auf der Route 66 ging es Anfangs an mehreren rießigen Farmen vorbei, hier sind die Rinderherden auf endlos weiten Weiden mit ihren eigenen Wasserlöchern (Seen), so früh am Tag war es schön im Vorbeifahren zu sehen wie gut es den Rindern geht 😁. Auch war es herrlich zum Motorradfahren 🏍 und wir kamen in den Genuß einen historischen Teil der Route 66 , welcher noch geschottert, ist zu fahren. Wir besichtigten mehrere Route 66 Sehenswürdigkeiten. Als das Motorradfahren Mittags wegen der Hitze keinen Spaß mehr machte, waren wir schon an unserem heutigen Motel in Oklahoma angekommen. Zwischen 14.00 und 18.00 Uhr ist hier niemand draußen, bei 39 Grad und heißem Wind kommt man sich vor wie in der Heißluftfriteuse 🥵Read more

      - Stop in kultigem Diner „Pancake Hut“, wo die Zeit stehengeblieben ist
      - 13 Meilen durch Kansas
      > Corvair grillt Zündspule 1 - damit bisher in drei Bundesstaaten liegengeblieben
      - Weiter nach Oklahoma
      - läuft erst gut
      - 30 Meilen vor Ziel grillt Thunderbird Zündspule 2 - zum Glück genug dabei
      > Fehlersuche gestaltet sich aber schwieriger, 1,5 h in 36 Grad

      Day 114

      Church Community im Heyburn Park

      Mit der Absicht uns für mindestens zwei Nächte einzunisten stellten wir uns auf den Heyburn Park Camp Ground. Check-In erfolgt nur online, und wir hatten noch gestaunt, dass wie nur für die erste Nacht buchen konnten. Am nächsten Tag haben wir dann erfahren, dass eine Kirche (oder Sekte, schwierig zu sagen) den kompletten Campingplatz für mehrere Tage gemietet hat. Die schon Anwesenden waren sehr nett und haben uns eingeladen, trotzdem zu bleiben. Und so verbrachten wir einen weiteren Tag in dieser Community. Ein bisschen fühlten wir uns wie die Tiere im Zoo, ständig wurden wir von jemandem besucht, begutachtet und ausgefragt. 😉Read more

      #Oklahoma - Der Herbst ist da

      Alle, denen wir erzählt haben, dass wir auch einen Zwischenstopp in Oklahoma einplanen, haben uns die selbe Frage gestellt: "Was wollt ihr in Oklahoma?" Nunja, das haben wir uns dann auf dem Weg nach Oklahoma City auch gefragt. Wir sehen mindestens 5 Ghosttowns, riesige Kuhherden und ansonsten weit und breit nichts. Auch ohne das Schild "Pampa" war uns das vollkommen bewusst.
      Oklahoma City ist ein süßes Städtchen mit schönen und nicht so schönen Ecken, aber definitiv mit der kleinsten Straßenbahn der Welt. Bei ziemlich windigen und kaltem Wetter schlendern Lucas und ich durch einen schönen Park, bewundern schöne Herbstdeko und entscheiden, dass ein Tag in der Stadt vollkommen ausreicht. Die restlichen zwei Tage verbringen wir mit planen, dem versorgen unserer 4 Katzen (eine braucht sogar 2 Insulin-Spritzen täglich) und uns bei Streaming Plattformen auf den neusten Stand zu bringen. Wir haben unseren kleinen herbstlichen Ausflug sehr genossen, freuen uns aber auch auf wärmeres Wetter in Texas und machen heute das beste was man laut Jim (unserem letzten Host) in Oklahoma machen kann: Wieder rausfahren.       Route 66 (Oklahoma)

      At some point we had to cross the country. The South-East has been awesome, but we still had tons of destinations in the West. The problem with the part inbetween is that it's mostly boring...or so we thought.
      We chose Route 66 to get from Oklahoma City to Amarillo, Texas, where we would leave Route 66 again and drive further south.
      Oklahoma is the state, where the longest parts of the historic Road 66 are still more or less intact and drivable. Many other states got rid of the old road after the "new" interstate system had been established sometime after World War II. For a while the road could still be used, but as the years passed, maintenance became too much of an issue and many states just cut the the expenses and closed the road. The road really wasn't what we expected. At times it was horrible to drive on, but we weren't in a hurry and drove slowly from one point of interest to the next. Birte had found a homepage with lots of sights along the way, so time passed quickly and we even had to skip some stuff.
      Close to Erick, Oklahoma, we turned on the radio to listen to local news and music. After only 2 minutes the music was interupted by a regional thunderstorm warning. People were advised to leave open areas and stop driving as heavy wind gusts, rain and lightning were expected for the next hour. The storm was currently on its way to Erick. Well...shit. We still had a few miles ahead of us and weren't planning on stopping in Erick, but figured that we should probably take the advise seriously, since thunderstorms in the US, especially in the Great Plains, can be severe. The homepage listed a small "Curiosity Shop" for Erick, close to Route 66. This should become our shelter.
      Inside the shop sat a bearded old man. Everything was packed with things, be it instruments, memorabilia, signs, lamps and whatever else. We talked to the guy about his shop and about music. Then he suddenly grabbed his guitar and gave us a 15 minute private concert. It was amazing. What a wonderful coincidence that the storm lead us to his place!

      The overall experience of driving down Route 66 was great. The road was mostly empty, because everyone uses the Interstate 40 to get from A to B, so we could stop whenever and wherever we wanted. Many villages along the way were deserted, which created a spooky horror movie atmosphere, but every once in a while you found a nice little gas station that was left from a different time.
