      I had seen a lot of students taking graduation photos during the day, so wasn't sure about visiting, but apparently the actual event isn't until next week. So I went along to walk around the buildings and try to pretend to be a clever person and see if anyone calls me out on it. I think I got away with it.
      The buildings were pretty, I'm sure it would have looked a lot better without the graduation stage being set up. I enjoyed walking around, it was still very hot, but plenty of shade under the trees.      Read more

      On change d'université

      Après une super nuit au motel on découvre avec regret qu'il n'y a pas le petit déjeuner annoncé 😢. Bon après pour 19$ la nuit on va pas se plaindre.

      On décide donc d'aller manger local au dunkin donut 🍩. Après avoir pris des forces nous partons pour Boston.

      Il faut savoir que cette ville coûte très très cher 🤑 et que nous avons donc réservé un hôtel noté 1 étoile ⭐️ dans un quartier quelques peu malfamé à Brooklin avec un i.

      J'indique donc l'adresse 🗺 du fameux hôtel à Malou "Heath street avec un h". Comme d'habitude en arrivant on est agréablement surpris de l'endroit où nous débarquons : un petit quartier résidentiel très sympathique... mais en regardant le panneau de la rue je peux y lire "East street"... nous n'étions pas au bon endroit 🤦‍♀️.

      On change donc l'adresse et là on reconnaît bien les lieux sans soucis. Je préfère préciser que c'était quand même un quartier assez résidentiel, n'allez pas penser que nous dormions entre les drogués 💉. Bref, on rentre et le moins qu'on puisse dire c'est qu'ils m'ont pas engagée pour le ménage ici 🧹. On repart donc assez vite vers nos activités de la journée sans hâte de revenir dormir.

      Au métro 🚇 cette fois ci c'est trop facile. On achète nos tickets en 30 secondes et j'aide un monsieur espagnol 🇪🇸 à recharger sa carte. Ah on aura jamais autant parlé de langues étrangères que pendant ces vacances !

      Comme cela fait 2 jours que nous n'allons pas en cours, ça commence à nous manquer un peu et décidons d'aller faire un tour à Havard. Bon c'est joli mais ça casse pas 3 pattes à un canard non plus hein donc on finit notre journée par une balade au bord du port ⛵️.

      Arrive enfin le moment de retrouver notre super copain Grégoire qui est venu passer ses vacances chez ses copains de Boston : Jonah, William et Grégoire. Un d'entre eux est au MIT et on apprend grâce à lui que l'école offre des bananes gratuites 🍌 au banana lounge tous les jours. L'autre est en stage à la NASA 🚀 à Los Angeles. Autant vous dire qu'avec nos études à Hamilton on est pas au niveau.

      Mais bon ils sont très gentils donc on sort tous ensemble faire la tournée des bars 🍻 mais on a plus tourné que fait du bar... il fallait payer 20 dollars pour rentrer presque partout et la musique 🎶 était NULLE !

      On rentre alors dormir 💤 pour plus de visites demain.      Read more

      Heute sind wir in Cambridge an der Harvard Universität. Bekannte Studenten/Absolventen dieser Eliteuniversität sind unter anderem Matt Damon, Bill Gates, Al Gore, Mark Zuckerberg sowie Barack und Michelle Obama. Cambridge ist ein Vorort von Boston. Der Ort selbst ist ziemlich schön. Es gibt keine Hochhäuser und irgendwie fühlt man sich schnell wohl. Wir haben gerade eine Campus Führung mit einer Australierin gemacht. Sie ist gerade in ihrem dritten Jahr hier. Eine lustige Info von ihr: Die Statur von John Harvard enthält drei Lügen. In erster Linie die, dass es nicht John Harvard ist 😁Read more

      Il campus di Harvard mi è piaciuto tantissimo, tutto fatto di casette e palazzine di mattoni rossi immersi in un bel giardino curato. Anche Harvard ha un sapore molto inglese, non per niente il comune in cui sorge... si chiama Cambridge! 😜
      Qui si respira un'aria di promesse, di futuro, di impegno e di carriera. Chissà per quanti di questi ragazzi essere qui è una specie di sogno diventato realtà!

      Abbiamo anche fatto merenda da "Tatte's", la bakery del campus, in mezzo a ragazzi che studiavano. Come mi manca quella vita! (A me no, ndMatt)      Read more

      Nach einem recht leckeren Frühstück mit "Powerwrap" bestehend aus Spinat, Eiweiß und Bacon sowie einem "kleinen" Kaffee (halber Liter) beschlossen wir, schlauer zu werden und zur Harvard-Univerity zu fahren. Gesagt, getan, gefahren.
      Dank der Rush-Hour ist man hier morgens zum Glück auch nie allein und findet in der teilweise wie eine Sardinenbüchse gefüllten U-Bahn immer jemanden, bei dem man sich anschmiegen kann. Wie zu Hause... Heute fuhren wir zum Glück einen Tick später und hatten daher mehr Platz für uns.

      Wetter anfangs eher so LaLa, mit leichtem Sprühregen und typischem Schmuddelwetter.

      Angekommen liefen wir erst auf eigene Faust durch den Campus und nahmen dann an einer von Studenten geführten, kostenlosen Führung teil, bei der es allerhand Interessantes zu lernen gab. Die Studenten sind sichtlich stolz hier zu sein / sein zu können und man merkt, dass hier Geld sitzt und auch einiges an Wissen vorherrscht. Da wir jedoch nicht bereit waren, die 60.000$ pro Jahr an Studiengebühren zu investieren, verzichteten wir dankend auf die Immatrikulation und beließen es bei der Führung.

      Zwischen all den typischen japanischen Touristen gelangen dann auch einige Fotos, ohne dass die Kollegen aus Fernost gleich auf jedem mit drauf sind. Auch wenn das nicht leicht fiel.      Read more

      Anscheinend bringt es Glück der Statue von John Harvard an die Füße zu fassen. Jedenfalls gab es dort eine regelrechte Schlange.

      Gerade war das Semester zuende und Wohnungswechsel angesagt - in max. 20 Minuten. Darüber wacht dann die Harvard-Police.

      Hoffentlich gut gelernt - denn die Studiengebühren betragen pro Semester 30-40.000 $; mit Unterkunft auf dem Campus.      Read more

      Day 37 - Cheers to Harvard

      Yesterday was about the history of Boston. Today was more about the educational and cultural contribution of the city.

      Alice and I decided on taking a tour around Harvard. This institution was founded in 1636, just sixteen years after the arrival of the Mayflower. This fact of the day and many more were revealed to us as we were guided around the grounds by a sophomore student. The tour was illuminating and we saw the buildings where famous students, including Matt Damon, Mark Zuckerberg and a large number of US Presidents stayed whilst studying here.

      We headed back into the centre of Boston and specifically to Boston Public Gardens. With the sun on its way down after another sunny day, it was a lovely place to relax for a short while. We were also on the look out for a bench that was made famous from the movie 'Good Will Hunting'. There is a scene in which Matt Damon and Robin Williams speak whilst staring out to the lake. There are many benches facing towards the lake and it took a little while to locate. This bench also made the news recently when it became an impromptu shrine to Robin Williams soon after his death. Although there was a couple already enjoying the view from this bench it was nice to find the spot. Alice and I then headed out of the park and towards a large crowd of people gathered outside a bar. This was not just any bar of course, but the bar that featured in the sitcom Cheers. Both the exterior and the interior of the building were used for the series and the narrow stairs that lead down towards the bar brought back memories of various scenes shot as the actors left the bar through the entrance. The venue now has three cramped bars and restaurants and somehow a gift shop too. The more bars that were revealed the more confused I felt as to which were actually used for the series. Once we reached the final bar, Alice and I had seen enough and started our journey to try and leave. Seeing a slice of US TV history was fun, however it was a bit too crowded and cluttered to enjoy as a drinking establishment. I doubt everyone knew our name but we were glad we came...

      We had dinner in the more spacious atmosphere of a vegan Thai restaurant. The choice of venue was a concerted effort on our part to eat less meat and the most interesting thing about this meal was the 'bubble' tea that Alice had. It was like a strawberry milkshake and had black balls of tapioca at the bottom and every so often they would travel up the straw and into your mouth. The spongy balls were tasteless and I seemed to like 'the experience' of fishing for tapioca a lot more than Alice.

      We spent the rest of the evening going over our notes from a very educational day.
