    Roadtrip from SF to Portland

July 18, 2017 in the United States

What a ride. Typical problem: too much to see and so little time! Great views on the road on highway 1, a night in Eureka (wouldn't recommend that) and on we went on highway 101 - mountains, lakes, beaches, sea, 2000 year old woods

Craft Beer was something we struggled with for the entire trip

Day 14 - Summer Better Than Others

September 21, 2016 in the United States

Alice and I took it easy today. A good fit for this city. The weather was still great, mid 20s, and after a lazy morning we strolled leisurely into Downtown. On the way we went to one of the highly regarded breweries of Portland, Burnside. Whilst looking at the list of beers and ales in front of us we couldn't decide on which one to have. So we ordered them all. No honestly, with a tasting flight. We went for the full twenty. Let's just say we worked our way through each glass with lots of chin scratching and debating. In brief, the Deadfinger, with a malty sweet aroma, was a fabulous ale and deserved winner whilst the Sakura Gost, with salt cured cherry blossoms, was a bad idea that should not have been barreled.

We then wandered into Downtown to a book store, Powell's. This is a wonderfully large and eclectic book store that I thought had a clever way of blending new and second hand books together so that if they had two of the same book that you wanted you could pick between the two and their varying costs. I couldn't resist and left with a book in hand.

Dinner time was soon upon us and we went to a place called Tilt. Alice had a huge chicken burger with bacon and I had the beef brisket sandwich that was bursting with meat and other fillings. A tasty meal that left us both stuffed and then we got the tram back to the motel.

    Song of the Day:
Bill Withers - Lean On Me (heard it at lunch)

    Portlandia

September 14, 2016 in the United States

Next stop was 'weird' Portland (they stole it from Austin), where some ex-pats ex-colleagues live. They were kind enough to offer us their sofa but as we brought our own bed we parked up in their driveway instead. The first day they drove us into town and we wondered through the hip street markets, then we met another old friend and hit a few swanky bars before heading to the Portland Timbers game. It was their 100 consecutive sell out game & the atmosphere was pretty amazing - starting with an incredible rendition of the Star Spangled Banner (almost made us feel patriotic!) & their mascot even had a chain saw slicing off big bits of tree during the game! They won an entertaining game 1-0, so everyone was happy (apart from RSL & Sounders fans of course!) We grabbed a v late dinner and pint after the game at funky joint called Radio Rooms.

The next day we all went for a run to flush out the night before and we borrowed their cool electric car to go back into town. It was a pretty amazing silent vehicle with a lot more zip than Elvis's tired and overweight hips. We explored downtime some more and headed back to the cool area we visited the previous night and ate at Bombay Theatre for some super tasty Indian street food.

It was so weird (and nice) to get back into what would have been a fairly normal weekend routine after so long on the road.

    Portland

November 17, 2015 in the United States

I got into Portland and met with Jackie and his friend John. We wandered downtown for a little. I got a maple bacon donut that my friend Jeff suggested from VooDoo Donuts. Then they showed me the bookstore. I had fun looking at the board games. We left John there and Jackie and I walked over to the food trucks. I got the spicy chicken from a Korean truck. Not the best day because of all the rain, but different. I left and met my new host, Terry, in Oregon City.Read more
