      New York City

      September 27, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

      Angekommen in New York City.

      Spaziergang im Central Park

      January 1 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

      Nightlife

      May 13, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

      Day 12 - Nightlife

The day started with some breakfast tacos around the block. Man, have I missed NYC. It started raining the moment I arrived at the metro station but I wasn't going to let that change my plans for the day. I wanted to go to Hoboken in Jersey City. Technically, I had been in New Jersey the day before since I arrived at Newark, but I wasn't counting that. Luckily, it wasn't raining in Jersey when I arrived. I walked along the waterfront and got a beautiful view of Manhattan's skyscrapers being covered in clouds. First time in the US and I got 3 states covered, that wasn't too bad, I would say. I got on a train back to New York and started walking around Manhattan. The rain had stopped again by this time. My plan was to walk from tattoo parlour to tattoo parlour until I found one that would do a walk-in today. During my walk, I had my Good Vibes playlist running and sang along to myself a little. I got a fair amount of streets covered that way. After being unlucky at a few places, I found an artist who said she'd give me a call in the evening. I then headed to the 9/11 Memorial Museum. This was the grimmest and most depressing experience of my trip. I was alive when this happened. It feels so recent. Right outside the museum was the Smorgasburg Food Market where I got myself some empanadas and guaraná soda. I then continued my walk around the streets of Manhattan, trying to stick to spots I had not been to yet, which wasn't much of a challenge. At around 4pm, I decided to head back to Matt's apartment to relax a little. The tattoo artist hit me up and we agreed that she would tattoo me on the day after. We then went to a Korean BBQ place near Empire with one of Matt's friends. This was my first time trying Korean BBQ. It was on the pricey side, but definitely worth it. This was one of my favourite dishes in North America so far, and frankly, at this point, I've had a lot. The three of us continued to a rooftop bar a few blocks down and enjoyed some very expensive drinks before getting some beers and chilling at Washington Square Park. The place was incredibly busy, but I guess on a Friday night, that was to be expected. Partying in NYC is very hectic, but in a good way. There's just so much energy in this city. We hit another bar but only stayed for one drink because it was crowded as hell. After that, I can't really remember what happened. According to Matt, I smoked a joint and we went to a café where I passed out. We then tried getting a cab which didn't work and walked back to the metro instead where we saw people having a fight, screaming at and punching each other. Our drunken selves found that to be pretty hilarious. We made it back to Matt's at around 3am. We made some trashy instant ramen and ate leftover breakfast tacos before calling it a day.Read more

      Coming to an end

      May 14, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Day 13 - Coming to an end

I started the day at 9am with a massive headache. Mixing drinks hadn't been a good idea. I joined a call on Discord waiting for Matt to wake up, but since he was still sleeping by noon, I decided to start my day either way. Since Dimitri told me that I'd have to try Dr. Pepper in the US, I stopped at the supermarket before getting some coffee at our breakfast spot and hopping on the metro. The B line which I normally took to the city doesn't run on weekends, so I had to improvise a bit and went to Union Square. This turned out to be more interesting than my original plan since there was a huge market and a protest against abortion laws going on. My plan was to walk in the direction of Washington Square to get a burger there, unless I found a more appealing place on the way. I ended up at a place that offers Cuban and Brazilian cuisine. While being there, I texted Matt and we had a conversation about being a bad influence for one another when it comes to alcohol. There is definitely some truth to that. Maybe it was for the best that I would be leaving New York the next day. I felt like I needed a vacation from my vacation. Well, at least my liver did. I then went to the tattoo parlour and got my second tattoo here done. Since my card stopped working, I could only pay for half of it in cash and we agreed that I'd come back the next day to pay for the rest. I went back to Matt's afterwards and we watched some Eurovision together since the finale of the song contest took place today. He had no idea about Eurovision before. We then got some food at the same place where we ate the first night. It seems fitting that my journey would end the same way it began, tired but with great Thai food.Read more

      Bliss

      May 5, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

      Day 4 - Bliss

The day started slightly too late, but with 16° C (I will never get used to Fahrenheit), a clear blue sky and warming sunshine. We had planned an outdoor-day, so this was perfect. By now, I had completely settled in. Navigating the metro with my coffee to go felt like it could be my everyday morning routine. Crossing over Manhattan Bridge with its stunning views each morning seemed like the normal thing to do by now. It felt familiar. I almost started feeling at home. Lukass and I had quite an eventful day ahead of us, planning to spend the first half of it walking Central Park in its entirety. And when I say entirety, I mean it - northern to southern end and to all spots in between that seemed interesting. The plan was to have a picnic and listen to some music somewhere in the park, however, Lukass was over an hour late because he managed to get on the wrong train _three_ times. Someone should seriously take his degree away. Therefore, I started walking by myself, which in hindsight was one of the better decisions I made while being in New York. It was the first time since my arrival that I had some time alone to actually process my thoughts and disconnect from all the noise and all the things happening around me. It was during my walk through Central Park with its beautiful waters and its blooming trees, with a view of the skyscrapers surrounding me, walking by myself with some relaxing music that I finally fell in love with New York. Since I didn't get to have a picnic, I wanted to treat myself to some Mexican food for lunch before my boat cruise would start. However, the place I wanted to go to apparently shut down during COVID, so I found myself on the Lower East Side without any idea of where to go. I stumbled around there for a bit and realised that I should probably head to the harbour soon, so all of that was a pretty fruitless endeavour. A bit frustrated and set on getting my Mexican food, I decided to simply get some as a sort of pre-dinner after the cruise. Luckily I made it to the pier in time. The cruise would have to be the most cliché tourist thing I had participated in until this point. It did provide a nice view of the city though, and I do enjoy boat rides. I did end up with a major sunburn though, but oh well, the price we pay, I guess. Afterwards, I finally got my tacos and waited for Matt to respond so we could make a plan for the rest of the day. We ended up meeting at Burger & Lobster near Times Square. Matt wanted me to try lobster rolls, which I've never had before and are actually quite amazing. Our plan was to wait until sunset to see the top of the Empire State Building and Times Square at night. At the restaurant, the lovely older couple seated next to us started a conversation with us. It made me realise how much more warm and open Americans are compared to people in Vienna. I wasn't at all surprised by that since it's kind of common knowledge, but still, it was nice to be here and experience it myself. In this regard, I am more American than European, it seems. At home, I'm usually the one to start conversations with strangers, being overly enthusiastic and extroverted. We then went to the Empire State. I was done with the check when Matt figured out that he had lost his ticket when he was pulling his mask out of his pocket. I ended up going to the top of Empire on my own while he tried to retrieve his ticket, and we didn't find each other on the top. It was a bit weird and a huge fail on our part. I still got to see the city at night with breathtaking views though, so I was okay with that. I headed to Times Square afterwards. Walking Manhattan at night has got to be one of the busiest things you could participate in, I already wonder what it will be like on the weekend. Matt and I regrouped at Times and headed to a jazz bar with live music and enjoyed a few drinks. I have a hard time finding other experiences that made me feel so relaxed. It was quite wholesome altogether. After the show was over, we had a short discussion about either heading home or experiencing NYC at nighttime. Of course, we settled for the latter and went to a pub nearby that Matt often goes to and that offers some great IPAs. On the way there, I bought the cheapest cigarettes I could find - 15 bucks. Fuck. Me. Those are Norwegian prices, man. On the other hand, everything in New York is expensive. As Matt put it - it's a playground for rich people. We had a great evening together but had a hard time making it back home. We walked for a bit and I realized that I really fucked up my right foot. I ended up taking off my shoes cause I couldn't endure the pain anymore. I can now say that I walked through Manhattan in my socks. We got some hot dogs and then called a cab back home. Gotta experience a drunk ride in a NYC taxi, I suppose. It was 3am by the time we got onto the cab that would take us home to Brooklyn. Back at Matt's place, he wanted to take a look at my foot and it looked really bad. I'm not sure what exactly I did to make that happen, but this did have the potential of fucking my next few days up a lot. I knew I wouldn't be able to do another full day of walking around, so I decided the next day would be great for some state hopping.Read more

      New York

      June 29, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

Abends erleuchtete New York in hellen und bunten Lichtern.
Insgesamt gefiel mir New York sehr gut.

    • Day 95

      New York, Central Park

      July 17, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Admittedly a lot bigger than I thought. My cell phone counted 27,500 steps that day. But I didn't need to know that it was a lot. 🤪 Beautifully green, lots of benches, lots of rocks, gardens, sports facilities, eternal grassy areas, trees, bike and running paths, sufficient and clean (!) toilet facilities, fruit, ice cream and water vendors. Squirrels, sparrows, starlings, robins, rats, rabbits. Dogs only on a leash. And so much space. Right in the middle is the Jackie Onassis water reservoir, which used to supply the city with drinking water. There are also a number of small ponds and bridges. The view of the skyline was hazy - a result of the forest fires in Canada. Wonderful park and its original purpose of offering a natural balance to the concrete desert around it, which it still fulfills. When you're in, you forget you're in NY. Unless a helicopter is flying overhead or a siren is wailing outside, which is the case every 10 minutes. It doesn't matter, it's nice here. 👍🏻

      Goodbye New York

      October 10, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

New York City - Tag 1

      August 27, 2015 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Wow wow wow!

Thanks ;)
