    P. Baxter Pet Cemetary

    September 10, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Governor Baxter was a well-known dog lover and breeder of Irish setters. When his dogs (14 of them) and his horse (named Jerry Roan) passed away, they were all buried at Mackworth Island. This area of the island was protected when the island was turned into a state park so you can still visit the sites of Governor Baxter's beloved pets when you visit Mackworth Island.Read more

    Portland, Maine I

    October 14, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

As this was our first US port all passengers had to be cleared by US Customs & Border Protection. Although there were nearly 1800 passengers the process was well organized and went quickly. Once again we did a self-guided historical walk in the downtown area and along Commercial Street, the main tourist zone. We stopped for lunch at The Porthole Restaurant where we enjoyed what Maine is famous for....lobster, haddock fish & chips and fish tacos. The restaurant wasn’t fancy but the food was fresh and delicious. JS headed back to the ship; Ed wandered along the waterfront before going back to the ship; while Janet & I did a long walk along the Eastern Promenade that runs along Casco Bay. It was a very scenic area.Read more

    USA Tour - Boston/Portland

    November 17, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Last day in Boston today before my trip up to Portland, Maine later in the day. Today is when I started this travel blog, I also made a few FaceTime calls home to let people know I’m still alive and well. I was going to Portland via a greyhound coach which I was looking forward to - except they’re not Grey like in the movies 😭😭😂😂 it was still a comfortable journey which took about 3 hours. Unfortunately it was so dark I couldn’t see much but I managed to catch up on some episodes of ‘Norsemen’ which my dad recommended to me before I left.

I stepped off the bus in Portland and immediately felt like this was a friendly place - the town reminds me of the one in the film ‘deck the halls’ there was snow everywhere and in some places around 7 inches deep. I walked all the way up congress street which took me pretty much direct to my hostel which is brilliant, more like a house than a hostel it’s in a brilliant location too!

After checking in I made friends with two guys in my room - 1 guy called Bryan from Tennessee who is up here on work (he owns a weed farm) and he’s ex Air Force. There was also a guy called Miguel who was also in the forces and me and him ended up going for a few drinks around Portland.

Brilliant night, Miguel was cool and he gave me some tips on where to go when I get to Texas as he’s from there. We ended up in a bar called Rosie’s which was a proper bar. Line dancing, country and western music and fries served in a basket!

    Great night!

    USA Tour - Portland, Maine

    November 18, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 1 °C

Decided to just walk around the town today - Portland is only a small place, so it’s very easy to get around. I ended up around the harbour area today, which was so quiet as it’s all pretty much closed for the season, including a lot of restaurants. Eventually came across a bar called ‘Ri Ra’ which is an Irish bar that was actually quiet good. I drank miller lite, and watched the NFL like a local. I also got speaking to a couple from Boston who where up here on vacation for a few days. Real cool, super nice people who bought me a few drinks and also recommended other places to go in Boston if I ever go back (I go back in a few days 😂😂)

After all the beer was drunk I needed another walk around the town. I stumbled across a place called ‘duckfat’ which was awesome - ended up getting a huge plate of poutine ❤️❤️

    Bangor, Portland, Concord & Rochester

    October 17, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

In Halifax our ways splitted. Madeline flew back home, Caddi went to New Foundland and I had to return the car to Toronto. I decided to drive via US this time to see something different. I found three great places to couchsurf on my way.
I checked out some cool breweries Adam recommended to me in Portland and tasted some beer, cider and kamboucha. I bought some beer and kamboucha to bring it to my host in Toronto.

    August 19, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Our host from the airbnb we stayed in got us some nice pastries we could eat for breakfast, so nice of her!!! We took the pastries in the car and drove up to Camden. A little city, still on the coast of Maine. We sat in the harbour and ate the pastries. It was all foggy and it was gorgeous to see. Got some souvenirs and went on with our drive to Freeport. An outlet center. We shopped around for a bit and than drove further to Portland. That city is just so beautiful and nice. The atmosphere is so good and safe. Had such a good time walking around there. We drank something at a bar and went on with our walk to a new bar where we also had some nachos that we shared for dinner since we are all stuffed from our hamburgers that afternoon.Read more
