      Views from the Shoulder

      June 16, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Yesterday and today have been riding along Highway 200.
We began the day with errands to the post office for mailing unneeded stuff home, and REI and Adventure Cycling Association HQ. I guessed my bike weighed 71 pounds. Alas, it was 89. Oh well, we are over Lolo Pass.
A highlight for the day was getting an on-the-spot adjustment to my loose rear wheel bearings and brake. I met Marlena in the post office and she told me about her Bike Doctor work. Marlena called ahead and Eric met me at the door, then Don touched up my bike beautifully! Such a great while traveling!!!
Last night we camped along the river. It was so peaceful and beautiful, confirming why this ride is so attractive.
On the left card and trucks. Sometimes using a good shoulder, sometimes a leftover scrap of narrow asphalt or a guardrail close to the white line. Cars and trucks are generally thoughtful fellow travelers.
On the right and ahead are amazing landscapes and vistas. The river beside the highway is like a calf wanting milk. She bangs up against the hillside, gets rebuffed and turns aside, only to bang back up against the hillside again and again. Each time, we are treated to a breathtaking view of a winding river wand it’s banks. Such a treat and a big reason why I came here.
We are in Lincoln Montana now planning to camp nearby.

      Helena-Drummond

      July 22, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 35 °C

      Garnet Ghost Town, MT

      July 19, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

      ————

Strange visit of a good town totally abandoned in the 60s. Founded in the 1890s, its growth, and decay has been punctuated by discovery of gold-ore and its exhaustion. Preservation status is awesome. It’s the best-preserved ghost town of Montana.

Day 11-12 Seeley Lake to Lincoln

      July 24, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

What is it really like to ride these roads? In a word, difficult, beyond belief in parts. I would consider myself to be a reasonable cyclist, not the worst and by no means the best, pretty average. I can happily keep up with a club ride and often ride 80-100km on a morning hilly ride. None of that prepared me for the terrain here. It is spectacular but 50km here on these roads with all my kit, takes on average 6 hours for someone like me. Many people I have met on route have had the same experience, overestimating their daily mileage. Each day I set off early, usually at 7am to avoid the main heat of the day. Riding on dirt gravel roads that are washboard all over with no smooth surface in site. After 20km my legs are screaming and the climbs have usually begun. Today the climb was not too long just a short 12km on really tough, rough rocky roads. Parts made the Paris Roubaix route seem nice, at least that had some tarmac. My fingers were becoming numb from the vibrations, cars passing kicking up dust when they pass, making it hard to breath. Stopping at a stream to refill my camel bag with filtered water was light relief. After 7km of climbing and being on gravel roads for 28km and 5 hours, my right knee started to give me pain. My whole body telling me to stop. My mind telling me to keep going, remembering how much work has gone in to getting me here, I push on. Enjoy it I keep telling myself. But my body is telling me different. No one tells you how hard these climbs are. Much like tough days in life, they too shall pass. I reach the summit and start the decent. Then my brain has to kick in, one mistake on this downhill, on these roads and I will be thrown off with broken bones. Out of the saddle and I started the decent, my legs screaming, my hands now numb, my brain arguing with my mind. Finally we reach the campsite and tonight it’s next to a bar. Sitting with my friends having a beer, meeting other cyclists makes the day all worth while. Until tomorrow.Read more

      Ovando

      June 19, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

I've read and heard a lot about how cycle friendly ovando is. I've been looking forward to arriving here. Started with 3 hotdogs and a container of grapes. Made me feel a whole lot better.

Decided on a short day today to let body recover from 2 days of not feeling well.

I took a walk up to the local road house for supper. Not the greatest food but when you are hungry any food will do.

Ovando has a number of places cyclists can stay, an old wagon, a tepee and the jail. I chose to stay in the jail.

      Lincoln, steakhouse

      June 20, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Good ride all the way to Lincoln. Started very cold so had warm clothes on. Within 10km I changed to my normal riding gear, it was still cold but I was no longer overheating. But within the next 10km it started raining so I added my wind breaker and rain jacket, of course the rain then stopped.

After I reached top of the first pass I added my windproof skull cap to keep warm.

I wanted a steak but they only do that for Dinner so I settled for a steak roll. It was steak but not quite what I wanted.

      Day 7 Comments

      June 19, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

An exciting day for me. I've been very excited to see Ovando after hearing so much about it. When I got there I was very tired and chose to make it a bit of a rest afternoon. I took it peacefully but its amazing how quickly I wanted to get back on the bike instead of hanging around an d doing nothing.

I really loved seeing the wooden cottages built deep inside the forest. Seems like a perfect match to my dream home.

Missoula day 2: Garnet Ghost Town

      June 6, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

On our 2nd day in Missoula, Mark took the kids to Garnet Ghost Town to explore and learn a little history. The town was remarkably well preserved. The hotel, a few shops, a dozen or so cabins, and the school house were all intact. Ada had lots of questions, but the kids were just as interested in the rocks and bugs around town.

After the tour we found a nice spot for lunch at an overlook. We stopped briefly at Kettlehouse Brewery on the way home for a growler fill, then relaxed the rest of the afternoon.

Somewhere between Missoula and Butte on our way to Big Sky. We'll get a half day today and ski all day tomorrow. The weather is getting slightly better. We figure Big Sky is our best bet for skiing. At least we got out yesterday.Read more
