      Journey full of wonders

      October 11, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

🇩🇪 Ok erst einmal sammeln.

Was ein Naturhighlight!

Plötzlich hält Felix an.

Jetzt erstmal was essen.

🇬🇧 Okay, let's gather our thoughts first. This entry is from four days later, and it's quite challenging to recall everything we've experienced in sequence.

So, we slept in Roseburg in a somewhat decent hotel. It's okay, but there's such a large gap under the entrance door that, on one hand, you can hear the highway outside, and on the other hand, it gets quite chilly in the room. However, we were exhausted from the day and fell asleep right away.

In the morning, we attempted to use the hotel's waffle iron and failed because we just couldn't figure out the American waffle irons. As a result, we ended up with overly crispy waffles that we had to pick out of the iron with plastic utensils. The utensils looked no better than the waffle, so we didn't dare to make a second attempt 😄.

Back to nature: Our destination was Salt Creek Falls. When we arrived at Salt Creek Falls, it was raining. First, pay the parking fee (yes, we still remember that). So, we put on our rain gear and set out on a short hike. The spot we're heading to is slightly below the main viewpoint, and there's a person sitting there. It's pouring rain, and someone is just sitting there. He's wet, and he doesn't even have proper rain gear. But we want to go down there too! Despite the rain, it's a bit muddy, but our not-so-new hiking boots easily help us down the slope. The guy sitting there has sneakers on. The waterfall is huge and thundering into the abyss. We're soaking wet and happy. What a natural highlight! Since we're already quite wet, we explore the area around the waterfall a bit more.

We continue our journey. The landscape changes from a wet rainforest to an open prairie-like terrain. A gigantic, very dried-out lake stretches alongside the road, creating an unreal, endlessly flat steppe. Suddenly, Felix stops the car. Through the trees, you can see huge black boulders that appear like a wall. It looks entirely surreal, as if this wall of rocks doesn't belong there, given that the rest of the surroundings are more reddish-brown and sandy.

We get out of the car and explore the wall. It's much higher than we thought and not climbable. A short reconnaissance flight with the drone reveals the extent of this "wall." It's more like a vast field of black stone, and we recognize a gigantic solidified lava flow that has carved its way through the area. Wow!

We keep driving, heading higher into the mountains. The rain turns into snow, somewhat to our surprise. An hour ago, we were in the prairie, and now it's snowing. The 1 cm of snow quickly turns into 40 cm, and we're very glad to be driving a 4x4 vehicle. It's a bit eerie because there's no one out here. However, we make it through and reach our hotel for today in Redmond. It's a small motel in good condition!

Now, it's time to eat. We found some decent bread at the supermarket. This bread isn't quite as soft and sweet 😅
