      July 31, 2020 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

As usual, we started our day by all of us eating and talking on the beds😉 but today, we had a 4 hour drive to Reno. When we got there, we noticed a lot of casinos and restaurants, but also so BLM protests✊🏾 Although this city was very... unexpected, we still enjoyed our time here. Day 23

      October 12, 2016 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 50 °F

I didn't sleep well last night. Maybe it was the coyotes howling in the background.

I woke up to a flat tire. There was no hole in the tube, so I just filled it with air, and kept an eye on it all day. It did fine. I'm not sure what happened.

The traffic was bad today, but I got lucky and found a road that took me off the highway for about 25 miles. Such a beautiful ride until till I had to climb. I'm getting better at it, but I still don't have to like it.

I crossed the Nevada state line. Yay! I'm in my third state. As I head east towns will become spaced further apart. I'm a little nervous about that.

The length of my ride today put me on either side of Reno. I didn't want to try to find a place to camp there, also i hadn't had a shower in almost 5 days I decided to get a room. The cheapest I found was $40 a night at Harrah's. Hard to say no to that, so I got the room for 2 nights. I decided to take a long break. I am relieved of riding all day tomorrow.

I checked in around 4. Got a room on the 17th floor. I have a pretty nice view.

The first thing I did was soak in the tub. Then downstairs to find food. My husband convinced me to spoil myself with the all-you-can-eat buffet. A fantastic idea after not having had much real food.

Tomorrow I will spend the day doing laundry, bike maintenance, and exploring Reno on foot. Can't wait to not ride a bike!

      Day off

      October 13, 2016 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 54 °F

It was so nice to wake up and realize that I didn't have to go anywhere. I got Starbucks, did laundry, walked down the river walk, and Midtown. Reno is actually a nice little city.

I also booked a flight for Hillary and Avery to come home in early December. I am really excited about that! He is already getting so big. :(

Not being on a bike for one day was good. A hot shower and a bed to sleep in was great. However, I am ready to get back to the middle of nowhere. Even if that means a shower only once a week, or sleeping on a half inch thick foam mat on the ground. I really love it.

I finished the night with some gear organizing , and bike maintenance. I'm getting to know my bike, and how to fix stuff, but there's plenty that I need to learn. Hopefully I won't have any major problems I can't figure out. Duct tape fixes everything, right?

As anxious as I am to get back on the road, I am not looking forward to the over 2,000 miles of elevation I am going to have to climb, in a short distance, first thing in the morning.

Tomorrow before I leave town, I am going to find some fresh baked donuts to fuel my trek up that hill. Then that will be the last of my indulgent rest in Reno.

    • Day 114

      August 21, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

      Miles hiked: 10.4
      Campsite: 1507.5
      Weather: scattered showers & 60s
One word to describe the day: unpredictable

I enjoyed my last night of sleeping in a bed. Got a very good night sleep! I think the next few weeks will be quite challenging but I'm ready for it! I said goodbye to mel this morning and headed to the Amtrak station.

A trail friend of mine, Maggie, lives in Truckee. She gave me some food suggestions to check out while I was in town. Went and got some avocado toast and coffee at do more coffee. Took the free bus around Truckee to a place called the Golden rotisserie to pick up a burrito to eat on the trail. After that I did my first solo hitch, sorry Mom! I've got rules to follow to keep me safe. A nice guy named Brian pulled over to pick me up. He said he never picks up hitchhikers but he decided to pick me up because I look like his daughter. He was in the middle of zoom calls for work. After he was done with his calls, we chatted for a bit. He was very impressed by the fact that I'm doing the PCT. He had done the El Camino which is in Spain. And plans on doing a trail that goes across America next year when he retires.

Now I'm officially a southbound thru hiker! It feels weird. It feels like I'm going the wrong direction, but I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually. There's less trail markers this way because less people go southbound. The scenery is so gorgeous. I feel like I'm in the Sierra is already! Hurricane Hillary brought me some unpredictable weather. The forecast looked really good when I left Truckee. It was just calling for a few scattered showers. Which was the case until it wasn't and started raining harder. I booked it to the nearest campsite, set up my tent and curled into my sleeping bag. Tomorrow should be better!

    • Day 4

      Reno

      April 15, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Weather: Partly sunny, cloudy, sprinkles and 60s

      States: Nevada and California

      Miles: 218

Hours: 3 hrs and 26 min

      Restaurant: Pompei’s Grotto

      Hotel/Home: Courtyard Marriott Fisherman’s Wharf

      Movies:

      Audible: Escape From Alcatraz

After a nice sleep, we woke early to get head start to San Fran since Reno itself is a bit of an armpit. Sorry. Where we stayed, in Sparks, is nice. It is about 10 minutes from downtown Reno. On our way out, we stopped in downtown Reno to see what it was about. Pretty much a seedy pit of druggies and down and outs. We had the kids step over a couple of syringes to get a picture of the Reno Arch. Ben says sarcastically, “Now I can tell my kids about the time I was in Reno.” Similar to the trip Paul’s dad took to Mexico the family while they were in California. Paul’s mom suggested visiting Mexico while they were so close to the border. His dad unenthusiastically obliged. He drove across the border of Tijiuana, turned around in a parking lot and drove back across. Mexico.

      Reno nevada

      April 14, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

OMG! If you are learning now, when I start with OMG, I’ve got a story to tell. I took the wheel for half of the way to Reno. Elizabeth, my co-pilot. “I got the wheels rolliin’, radio scrollin’...” then, just as we are singing through the mountain ranges, the dreaded light comes on...OMG, OOG! Out of Gas. 40 miles till empty in the middle of flippin’ no where. In a bit of panic, “Um, Biddy, we might be running out of gas. Please ask Siri for the nearest gas station.” Nothing, nothing, nothing for 80 miles. We don’t have enough gas to get there. “Wait! Flying J’s and Terribles Casino and Truck stop...39miles.“ Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. We have 40 miles left and it is 39 to the gas station. Paul has his headphones on and may be asleep. “Paauuulll, we might run out of gas.” As always he is calm as a J-bird. Yes, Paul. He can get wound up about some things but these things, the ones that have me crying or angry or (like now) sweating, heart beating out of my chest, my hands sweating on the wheel, well, yup, calm as a J-Bird. Elizabeth and I were freaking out. We were watching the gas tank tick down as the miles to the gas station ticked in unison with only a mile to a mile and a half difference. I’ve never prayed so hard on a Palm Sunday as I did today. Paul was having fun saying, “+1 difference in milles,+1.2, +1.5,+1.” Then it got down to only a 1/2 mile difference in miles. Elizabeth just got her permit and was learning a hard lesson in keeping your taking full in BFE. Would this lowly gas station even be there? Maybe J is dead now. Maybe they aren’t open on Sunday. Please God don’t make Paul walk down the highway amongst the tumbleweed and, eek, the murdering like man all in black we just saw walking down the highway. Thoughts of Paul coming upon him makes me shudder. The man coming upon our van on this remote highway, shudder. Well,, we literally made it to the gas station pump at 0. I was shaking. My adrenaline was through the roof. We made it. OMG! “Can I get a hallelujah? Can I get an amen?”(Maren Morris Song-My Church- we were just listening to it.) Another story to tell.

We are now in Reno heading to another Residence Inn Marriott and then check out Reno.

We had dinner at this Italian restaurant..The. Olive. Garden. It was by our hotel. Now the boys are playing basketball and Biddy and I are watching Devil Wears Prada. We love that movie. We are settling in for the night to move on to San Fran tomorrow. Good Eve.
