    • Drive thru Spearfish Canyon

      August 31, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

When we left the campground this morning to visit Mt Rushmore (previous footprint), the plan was to then drive back via Iron Mountain Road and spend an easy afternoon on our patio.

We changed our minds during our “breakfast with the presidents.” Seeing as we were already north of the narrow, curvy, slow-speed roads we have to negotiate to get anywhere from our campground, it made sense to check out a few more places before going back home.

So, we headed up to Hill City and beyond. We didn’t do much in any of the towns, so I’ll skip them for the time being and take you straight to Spearfish Canyon, which we entered from the south.

We debated hiking the Roughlock Falls Trail, but it was already 1:30p and we still had a ways to go before we started to drive back home. Instead, we just drove up to the falls area. Finding a picnic table hidden in the foliage, we had lunch first and then headed off on the short trail to check out the falls. There were enough people on the narrow, paved trail that we had to don our masks on and off, but it was well worth the walk down to the cascades that fan out over the rocks.

Back in the car, we continued our drive north, stopping to check out some cataracts and cascades. Bridal Veil Falls, which is visible from the road, had very little water streaming down the stone wall. It would have been disappointing, except that there was a mama mountain goat browsing nearby ... accompanied by its kid. The last time we saw mountain goats was at Tangle Falls on the Icefield Parkway in Canada. That was back in September 2009 ... a while back. So this was a particular treat.

      Scenic drive through south dakota

      August 29, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

Took the scenic route recommended by the forest ranger through the tail end of Wyoming and into South Dakota. Passed by a historic building built early 1800s then the “center of the nation”. The rock formations here are very cool it was the scenic highway outside of spearfish. Stopped at several waterfalls. One even called bridal veil… I think I have hiked in 3 states now with a waterfall called this. Then continued on to pass by the city of deadwood. Several people told me it is only a tourist stop so I didn’t stop in the town.Read more

Where will the road take us next?

      July 29, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌩️ 77 °F

As we drive along the winding 14A highway we take a quick side trip to Roughlock Falls. The final scene of the movie Dances With Wolves’ winter camp was filmed a little bit further down the road, but we decided not to go due to time.

Back on 14A we enjoy the beautiful scenery and make a quick roadside pit stop to view Bridal Veil Falls.

Wish we had a little more time as we would have loved to check out Devils Bathtub which is a natural rock water slide! 🤷‍♀️🤷. Next time!!

      Roughlock Falls

      September 15, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

Back in the jeep to continue our drive in the canyon. Just drove slowly to put our eyes on the cliffs looking for mountain goats or climbers. Didn't see anymore.

About halfway through this 15 mile plus drive you arrive at little town of Savoy. Big lodge, and a couple of restaurants and lots of ATV rentals! I think this state has a lot of back roads thru forests and abandoned mines. We drove about a mile back from the lodge on one of the forest service roads to get to the Roughlock Falls. We could have hiked it (?), but it would have been all uphill getting there. So we stayed in the jeep and gave the hikers a 👋. (Linley will be so proud of us!)

We really loved this series of falls. And they have this well developed path that follows the creek as it moves from the upper to the lower falls. Nice canyon setting. Still a couple of weeks before seeing some of those wonderful fall colors. Plus we are only at about 4,000 ft. (Really hoping we get to see some color in Yellowstone! 🤞)

Finished out drive by completing a loop thru Deadwood and back to Spearfish. Deadwood might be fun if you have time to spend, but our "drive thru" impression is that it is highly commercialized. Lots of shopping, restaurants and lodging. So many visitors that there are several parking garages to accommodate all the cars. Definitely another level above Virginia City, but that sort of feel.

Got back about 5 and gave Charlie some more play time with her frisbee and the creek!! We really like this little City Park!
