      Thomas Jefferson Memorial

      October 11, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial is located at the Tidal Basin, a small lake. When looking back at Washington from here, one thing stands out, and that is that there are no high-rise buildings in Washington. This is forbidden by an ordinance and thus Washington has in contrast to even very small cities in the U.S. a very different cityscape.

      Tidal Basin

      March 17, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

To finish the day, and with the train easing off I had a walk around Tidal Basin. The park was covered in cherry blossom with beautiful views out over Washington DC. The Basin’s walk ways also included a number of impressive monuments:

      • Martin Luther King
      • Korean War Memorial
      • Franklin D Roosevelt
      • Thomas Jefferson Memorial

      Walking Tour of Washington Memorials

      January 6, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

This was my third visit to Washington D.C and the first time I would be visiting with my daughters, I had to make it a special and memorable experience for them so after some research and planning on how to see all the memorials and monuments in a structured order I decided we should start-off with the Jefferson Memorial. Union Station has become our start off point as they have a large paid garage with capacity for over 2,600 cars. Parking for 10hrs cost $20, shorter durations are cheaper but most sight seeing visits will fit into this range.

Just opposite the the Union Station is a bus stop where you can board the Circulator NMC bus for $1 per rider. It takes you round the mall, monuments and memorials. so we hoped on one and stopped beside the Jefferson Memorial from where our walking tour of Washington D.C Memorials and Monuments commenced, the route we followed is shown in the map below. We visited the following sites in the following order:

      1. Thomas Jefferson Memorial
      2. Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial
      3. Martin Luther King Jr Memorial
      4. D.C War Memorial
      5. Korean War Veterans Memorial
      6. Lincoln Memorial
      7. Vietnam Veterans Memorial
      8. The Lockkeeper's House
      9. The White House
      10. Washington Monument

The entire walking tour is about 4kms and took us roughly 2hrs as we stopped at each site to admire the monument/memorial, read the inscriptions and take some memorable pictures.

      Day 2 Washington DC

      September 2, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Today we visited the Washington, Lincoln, MLK, FDR, and Jefferson, monuments. We went to the Korean war monument, the Smithsonian Museum, and American Natural History Museum. We had a chance to talk to a capital security guard by the Smithsonian museum and we had tears in our eyes as he shared with us his incredible experience that he went through during the storming of the capital building by a mob of Trump supporters which included the Proud Boys and extremists groups to protest the Presidential election. That mob did 30 million dollars of damage to our Capitol building and its artifacts What a sad blemish on our country.Read more

      Hello, Washington DC!

      September 19, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 68 °F

We've arrived! The pace of our trip will pick up considerably as now that we have made it to Washington DC. Our schedule here is chock-full of exciting activities, marking a shift from the relaxed start to our trip.

We began our DC escapade with visits to the National Museum of Natural History and the National Museum of American History, two of the many Smithsonian museums. The students had a fun time exploring in groups, which made it a bit challenging to snap photos but certainly enhanced their museum experience.

Next on the itinerary was a much-needed dinner break at Pizzeria Uno where we indulged in the classic Chicago-style deep-dish pizza. It feels like we are always eating on these trips!

The real magic began after we were done with dinner. We visited three memorials as the sun went down - the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the FDR Memorial, and the Jefferson Memorial. Seeing the memorials at night is spectacular.

For those following along on the itinerary, you’ll likely see some deviations. A trip itinerary is nothing more than the hopes and dreams of what can happen in a perfect world. 🙂 When we have an appointment, we must make it. Otherwise, we’ll adjust the day to fit our needs and flow. Mrs. Bates is the absolute best at tailoring the trip on the fly to to ensure the best possible experience. She is a seasoned expert!!!

Though we spent a large portion of our day on the road, every moment off the bus was packed and I still managed to get 15,000 steps in!

We are winding down for the night. Tomorrow offers a later start, giving us a moment to recharge before embarking on a full day of adventure. 😁
