Verona, NY

We stopped at Turning Stone casino, owned by the Oneida Indian Nation, to pass some time before our much anticipated meetup with mom, dad, Aunt Kathy, Uncle Scott, and Pat at the Finger Lakes.

We got some chores done, continued to get to know and love (or in some cases, tolerate) Thunk, and ate some tasty food.

I had the best restaurant Mac and cheese I've had in a long time (maybe ever?), so that was noteworthy. The boys were very popular when they spent time in their tent, everyone wanted to say hi to them.

In other news, it is hot, humid, and occasionally tornado-y in upstate New York (don't worry, the tornado warning or watch or whatever didn't quite affect our location and there's a shelter here just in case it did). We did lose power, which isn't too big of a deal with a big bay of batteries and a generator, at least.Read more

At the Casino

Caught the shuttle bus to Turning Stone casino, amazed at the number of people playing the slots & tables. No gambling for us, only here to eat BBQ at the Tin Rooster, great food, country music playing & line dancing waiting staff. Great views from the 21st floor of the Tower.Read more

Great campsite overlooking the fishing pond at RV park at Turning Stone casino. Watching Olympics on TV ... US biased, guess we'll see the Brits if they win Gold !!!

World's Smallest Church - Oneida, NY

Quinn found us another interesting stop. The world's smallest church. It fits two people. It is in the middle of a bog of some sort. We were only able to see it from afar. Still, a good stop. The geese didn't seem to enjoy us interrupting their day.Read more

Overnight stay in Verona, NY

An overnight stop at The Villages at Turning Stone in Verona, NY turned out to be a gem! With ample shade provided by the tree cover, a serene ambiance, and a free shuttle to the casino (where everyone else apparently hangs out, hence the quiet), it’s definitely a place we'd revisit.

The shuttle service was a lifesaver, sparing us from unhooking the Jeep for our casino adventure and dinner escapade. Our driver doubled as a tour guide, sharing that the casino has hosted the World Series of Poker and attracts over 5 million visitors a year! 😳

As you pull up to Turning Stone Casino, you’re greeted by statues of turtles, bears, and wolves—symbolizing the three tribes that teamed up to create the casino about 30 years ago. (Missed a photo op, though. 😢)

We got a “free” pull and won $10, which we promptly spent on the gaming machines. Don hit the jackpot with $5.40 on his first spin, and Beth walked away with a whopping $0.55 on hers! Trying to figure out the machines was a comedy show in itself. 🤣😂🤣 High rollers, watch out! 😂 We had a blast trying to figure out the gaming machines, laughing all the way.

The casino boasts about 10 different restaurants, though some were closed. We settled on the Italian place, which served up good, hearty portions (hello, leftovers!) — nothing to write home about, but it hit the spot!

All in all, it was a fun and memorable stop!Read more
