Filled with propane then moved on to Wilmington and walked the water front. We noticed on the way out of town a sign for the Battleship North Carolina, we toured the ship for 2 hours. Because of the late time we stay at Wal-Mart in North Myrtle Beach SC.Read more

Outer Banks to Wilmington

Monday 29th May
As planned we were up and away by 06.40am. I did the first couple of hours driving to give Peter a break as we had a long drive ahead. Leaving early was a good plan as the roads were empty and we got a good few miles under our belt before we picked up any traffic. We stopped for breakfast in a town called Plymouth at Sheila’s café. Sheila was an elderly lady who cooked the most delicious food – her toast was served with homemade jam! When we arrived there were 3 local sheriffs there also having breakfast, she was clearly very popular.

It was very very hot when we arrived in Wilmington at around14:00. Parking in the shade of a tree we went to a local café to look on the internet for someplace to stay. We decided to go for the Holiday Inn because with the points he has amassed a room would only cost $30 – bargain. We strolled around Wilmington, but as it was still Memorial weekend – Bank Holiday Monday, most shops were shut so we couldn’t really browse properly. We wanted to ride the trolleybus, but, yes you’ve guessed, it wasn’t running due to the Bank Holiday. Tired and very hot we decided to check into our hotel, do some washing and relax, maybe researching somewhere to stay tomorrow. Tomorrow everything should be open and we can explore a bit before travelling onto Charleston.Read more

Run To The Sun Day 1

Today was just about as perfect as a day can get. The weather was clear, sunny, and warm, the roads were in good condition with very little traffic most of the day, and, perhaps best of all, our group of 10 bikes and 12 people were in sync even though some of us had just met each other last night.

One of the great things about being part of HOG (Harley Owners Group) is the almost immediate camaraderie you have with other HOG members. Last night at dinner, the rally coordinator asked for a show of hands from anyone not riding with anyone else during the rally. There were a couple of folks sitting by our three-person group (me, Bob, and Chief), so I asked if they'd like to join us. By the end of the evening, we had a group of eight bikes and two more bikes showed up at the hotel this morning to roll with us! Awesome 🤣!

Our dirty dozen made a lot of stops at dealerships, the Wright Brothers National Memorial, and an old store called Gibbs Store LLC in Engelhard, NC. The sign outside says the store began in 1895, and it must be the only store in town because it has everything from antiques to shotguns to wrenches to snacks. Cool place.

We ended today at Carolina Coast H-D in Wilmington, NC, with another terrific dinner and some door prizes. Now, I'm in my hotel room getting ready to lead the group again tomorrow. This is soooo much fun!!

Before heading for camp, we stopped at the Blue Surf Cafe in Wilmington for lunch. Or dinner ... it was about 3:00. Though it looked inauspicious sitting in a small strip mall, our meal was stupendous. Baja shrimp tacos with spicy greens and chipotle mayonnaise on the most amazing fresh-made corn tortillas. On the side was a chili-mango and radish salsa on mizuma greens which has to be tasted to be believed. It was worth the wait.

We weighed going off and doing tourist things, but decided just to set up camp and relax. Thunderstorms are promised (in fact we are listening to some distant thunder right now), and we were VERY hot and tired. Heather was so hot, she spilled apple cider all over, and GORDON was so hot he didn't know whether he wanted a beer or not. Heather RAN to the trunk and grabbed and emergency IPA.

The campground is about 5 miles from Wrightsville Beach, and we have a lovely private spot nestled in sand and gnarly coastal pines. It is finally cooling off and the thunder has grown to occasionally shake the entire trailer.

MORHING UPDATE: We awoke at 6:00 to a veritable concert of barnyard bellows. A VERY active and persistent rooster who sounded unlike any rooster I've ever heard. Being a North Carolina rooster, perhaps he was doing a rebel yell. Not to be outdone a very agitated dog was shouting counterpoint machine gun style. A poor beleaguered turkey, obviously straining for any space in the serenade, filled any silence with a soft gobble. Gordon is sure he heard a pig adding his disapproving grunts but i must have missed those when i plugged my ears. We finally gave it up and got out of bed. We soon realized it must have been our angels alerting us to get up and LOOK AT THE WEATHER!Read more
