      Jochen setzt mich auf Diät!

      February 28 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 2 °C

Vielen Dank Jochen! -> Ohne Sam wäre Frodo niemals nach Mordor gekommen. 😊

P.S. Kamillentee musste ich auch trinken. 🤢

      Endlich neue Schuhe!

      February 27 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

😒Read more

      Es geht bergauf!

      March 2 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Shady Valley, home of the snake

      July 11, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

      Trail Magic abounds

      May 31, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

One of the most special surprises of the Appalachian trail so far has been the presence of “Trail Magic”. Hikers from previous years or local folks setup little (sometimes big) stations at road crossings with all sorts of goodies to keep us smiling down the trail. Often these angels are cooking up burgers or pancakes and have an assortment of snacks, fresh fruit, and hot/cold drinks. They offer it all up for free and are rewarded with so many smiles and super grateful through hikers. The following photos represent less than half of the trail magicians that I have come across. I am so stoked and grateful to all of them. Thank you!Read more

      Blue Ridge Parkway

Beautiful drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Ended up in Damascus VA which the Appalachian Trail runs right through town along a brick sidewalk.

      Virgina

      September 28, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Cassie was all ready to go. When we crossed the Susquehanna River at Harrisburg it was beautiful. The old aquaduct arches were reflected in the water. I was not quick enough to get the photo. I also missed getting the water tower that was painted like a basket of apples. We had mountains on both sides of us all through Virgina. We drove into a thunderstorm. Had a little wind, some heavy rain and then some showers. We stopped 24 miles short of TN. It was a good day!Read more

      Abingdon, VA

      March 11, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

This is the site of Heartwood, a center for Virginia's Crooked Road Trail. In addition to the collctions and presentations by regional artisans they feature music every Thursday night. Last night the young folks had their spotlight. The 11 to 15-year olds in the group Shadow Grass blew everyone away with their talent and stage presence. Sensational!
Beautiful countryside sites on a warm spring day and a stop for an iced coffee at Zazzyz made this last day in Virginia a perfect 10.

      Virginia - Day 1

      June 3, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

We woke up at our Airbnb on Friday morning in Abingdon, VA, to begin celebrating Heather & Robbie's wedding weekend. The cabin and surrounding area were rustic and lovely... The bug situation in the cabin was substantially less desirable. The good news is we were busy with wedding festivities all weekend, so didn't spend much time in the cabin.

Friday the boys and I went to meet up with other wedding guests & tour the town. Heather took friends on a walking tour of the town, but the boys got distracted by the first playground we spotted. While they played Floor Is Lava Ninja Warrior, I spotted a Free Little Library and read some Russian poetry that someone had left for the taking. It was a cool, beautiful morning and a lovely way to start the weekend.

Later in the afternoon Nate joined us after he finished work and we went to the rehearsal, followed by dinner at a neighborhood brewery, Wolf Hills Brewery. The boys had a blast with games and meeting new kid friends who had also rolled in for the wedding. Holden spotted a giant moth and was quite smitten by it, but not as much as he's smitten by Heather. Lots of laughs and hugs were shared this night. We couldn't have asked for better weather or better hosts.

      The VCT...what is it?

      October 6, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

A destination for visitors from across the US and a cherished asset for local residents, the Virginia Creeper Trail is best known as a biking trail, but in reality, the VCT is a multi-use trail with opportunities to bike, walk, run, fish, horseback ride, people watch, cross country ski and geocache, along with chances to observe and learn about the native fauna and flora, as well as the fascinating historical and economic role the railroad played in southwest Virginia.

The trail got its unusual name from the early steam locomotives as they struggled slowly up steep grades, carrying lumber. Having failed to turn a profit since the Great Depression, the Creeper ran its last train on March 31, 1977. The trail gained new life in 1984, when it was designated a National Recreation Trail.

Over 150,000 people use the trail annually, and in 2014 it was inducted in to the national Rail-Trail Hall of Fame.

From Whitetop Station near the top of the second highest peak in Virginia, the Creeper Trail meanders (mostly!) downhill through and over some of the most spectacular scenery imaginable – open farmlands and fields, dense forests, Christmas tree farms, rushing streams and creeks. On your way, you’ll sail across nearly 50 wooden trestles as you glide above this stunning scenery and travel through small, charming towns and past restored railroad depots. The VCT will intersect with the Appalachian Trail at a few points along your journey and, between Damascus and Whitetop, you’ll find Whitetop Laurel Creek, one of Virginia’s largest and most beautiful wild trout streams, just feet from the trail.

The elevation change along the 34-mile trail is moderate. Near the top of Whitetop Mountain, you’ll find Whitetop Station at 3500’ and Damascus (the half-way point) clocking in at a little over 1900’ – an elevation change of almost 1600’ in 17 miles. From Damascus to the trail head in Abingdon, the trail inclines slightly, with an elevation increase of less than 300’ that includes a moderate climb from the Holston River confluence to Abingdon. View Elevation Profile.

Heading down from Whitetop to Damascus takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on your pace. Add another 2 hours or so to travel from Damascus to the trail head in Abingdon.

The diverse landscape, the elevation variability and multiple access points all combine to make for a design-your-own Creeper Trail adventure and a chance to individualize your experience according to your time constraints, what portions of the trail you’d like to see, or whether you’re riding with very young children or energetic teens. Most folks opt for a shuttle from Damascus or Abingdon up to Whitetop Station and then journey the entire 34-mile trail to Abingdon or down to Damascus, located halfway between Whitetop and the trail head, though you can also head to Abingdon directly from Damascus or, for a more challenging route, bike up from Abingdon or Damascus to Whitetop Station.
