      It's my birthday

      Early to rise and off to The Vatican.
      8.00am and a queue as long as your arm. Jumped ahead at our alloted time but still qued to clear security.
      It's amazing how efficiently people disperse and the museum manages to stay calm and relaxed. The Sistine chapel is smaller than imagined. (Tone sneeked a photo) The art and artefacts from around the world are amazing.
      Tony managed to sneek us into the front of the que for St. Peters Basillica. It is vast and highly elaborate inside, but i can't help wondering if all this oppulence is necessary in the pursuit of devotion to a religion?      Read more

      Totally blown away by the Sistine Chapel. No pics as copyrighted but visit this spot. Will change your life.
      Michelangelo did not want to paint it. He spent 7 months saying no to the Pope before agreeing and he was paid $500,000. He took 4 years to paint it.
      He came back 20 years later to paint the Last Judgment which is spectacular. It's also where they hold Conclave for the appointment of a new pope. The 2 ancient stoves are removed unless conclave and the chimneys are removed. The pics are from the Vatican museum.

      Viel laufen, viele Eindrücke, viele Menschen und Nationen. 🤗
      Und natürlich der schöne Petersdom und die Sixtinische Kapelle..

      Der Vatikanstaat, Nachfolger des tausendjährigen mächtigen Kirchenstaates, ist seit seiner Gründung im Jahr 1929 ein selbständiger Staat und das spirituelle Zentrum der römisch-katholischen Kirche. Der offizieller Name ist "Stato della Città del Vaticano" (Staat der Vatikanstadt).

      Die Vatikanstadt ist eine Enklave innerhalb des Stadtgebiets von Rom mit einer Fläche von 0,44 km2. (maximale Ausdehnung Nord-Süd: 450 m, Ost-West: 550 m) Sie liegt auf der rechten Tiberseite Roms und ist zum großen Teil von einer Stadtmauer umgeben. Zur Vatikanstadt gehören der Petersdom, der Petersplatz, die Vatikanischen Museen, sowie andere Paläste und Gärten innerhalb der Mauern.

      In der Vatikanstadt leben etwa 850 Personen, davon haben etwa 570 die vatikanische Staatsangehörigkeit (Kardinäle und Prälaten, die im Vatikan wohnen oder wichtige Funktionen bekleiden, die diplomatischen Vertreter des Vatikans im Ausland und ca. 50 Laien). 

      Der Vatikan hat ca. 3.000 Beschäftigte, die jedoch überwiegend nicht auf seinem Gebiet wohnen und auch nicht seine Staatsangehörigkeit besitzen. Alle Beschäftigten sind zu absoluter Dienstverschwiegenheit verpflichtet. Wer hier arbeiten möchte, muss katholisch sein und vor zwei Priestern schwören, Schweigen über seine Tätigkeit zu bewahren.

      Der Nationalfeiertag des Vatikans ist immer der Tag, an dem der jeweilige Papst gewählt wurde. Im Moment ist es also der 13. März, der Tag der Wahl von Papst Franziskus.

      Das Staatsoberhaupt ist der Papst, gegenwärtig also der aus Argentinien stammende Papst Franziskus (bürgerlicher Name:Jorge Mario Bergoglio), geboren am 17. Dezember 1936 in Buenos Aires.

      Die Staatsform ist eine absolute Wahlmonarchie. Das Staatsoberhaupt (der Papst) wird von der Konklave, der Versammlung der Kardinäle der römisch-katholischen Kirche, gewählt. Danach ist er auf Lebenszeit (oder bis zu seinem Rücktritt) der absolute Herrscher des Staates.

      Die Armee (besser gesagt die Hauspolizei) des Vatikans ist seit 1506 die Schweizergarde. Im 15. und 16. Jahrhundert galten die Schweizer Söldner als die zuverlässigsten und tapfersten Soldaten Europas. Die Schweizergarde hat heute einen Bestand von 110 Mann, davon sind 32 Offiziere und Unteroffiziere und 78 Gardisten, die alle die Schweizer Staatsangehörigkeit besitzen müssen und zur Einhaltung des Zölibats verpflichtet sind. Die offiziellen Sprachen (Kommandosprachen) der Schweizergarde sind Deutsch und Italienisch. Außerdem gibt es noch die Päpstliche Gendarmerie und das Aufsichtspersonal für Kirchen und Museen.

      Die offizielle Währung der Vatikanstadt ist der Euro. Der Vatikan hat das Recht, eigene Euromünzen zu prägen, die aber kaum in den freien Umlauf gelangen, sondern meist nur zu hohen Sammlerpreisen in Fachgeschäften (oder im Internet) zu bekommen sind. Auf der länderspezifischen Rückseite der Euromünzen ist das Portrait des jeweiligen Papstes zu sehen. Nach jeder Papstwahl werden also neue Euromünzen geprägt.

      Das Vermögen des Vatikans an Immobilien, in New York gelagertem Gold und Aktien wird auf etwa 10 Milliarden Euro geschätzt. Zum Vermögen des Vatikans gehören auch die Kunstschätze, die die Päpste in Jahrhunderten angesammelt haben, die z.T. in den Vatikanischen Museen ausgestellt werden, und die von unschätzbarem Wert sind.       Vatican Museums

      This museum is absolutely incredible and has many, many exhibits from all over the world. It was impossible to see everything. I was fortunate to have a guided tour because everything feels very mixed together - you take one turn and the art changes centuries and continents with no warning. I especially liked seeing the work of famous artists like Michaelangelo, Raphael (my new favorite artist, was also a great dude), Dali, Van Gogh, and even Francis Bacon. There was also a large section of 16th century maps of the Italian region (not yet Italy, but apparently these maps were one of the first written references to the area as such) that are incredibly detailed and amazingly accurate. Of course I loved that part! There was also a postmodern exhibit of the artist Jean-Michel Folon that I really liked, it was a bit dark and not what I expected to see in the Vatican. The Sistine chapel is also in the museum which was so amazing to see but unfortunately you can’t take pictures of it. It was a bit weird because they say it is too holy to take pictures but then they make you walk through like 5 gift shops to exit it… strange.
      One of the coolest aspects was Raphael’s “apartment” where he was in residence and painted all of the walls. Originally it was thought that he did all the sketches and his pupils did the coloring. But it was recently discovered - like, literally a few months ago in late 2021 - that two of the figures were painted completely by Raphael. Not sure how they figured that one out. So I got to experience that a little differently than most people who have visited before. Cool little fact.      Read more

      Von der Kuppel aus wäre uns die Sixtinische Kappelle fast nicht aufgefallen, da sie durchaus unscheinbar ist. Von innen ist sie dafür sicherlich eine der schönsten Kirchen/Kappellen die wir je gesehen haben. Die Sixtinische Kapelle ist eine der Kapellen des Apostolischen Palastes und der Ort, an dem das Konklave abgehalten wird. Bei der Konklave handelt es sich um die Wahl des nächsten Papstes. Eine Wahl wird nach Eintreten der Sedisvakanz notwendig, wenn der bisherige Papst gestorben ist oder auf sein Amt verzichtet hat. Das Wahlgremium besteht aus den wahlberechtigten Kardinälen, die sich im Konklave versammeln. Die Besonderheit dieses Wahlverfahrens ist, dass das Wahlgremium eingeschlossen wird, bis es zu einer gültigen Wahl gekommen ist. Im Zusammenhang mit der Wahl ist sicherlich der Schornstein der meist fokussierte Punkt der Welt. Weißer Rauch und schwarzer Rauch kennzeichnen das Ergebnis der Wahlgänge bei einer Papstwahl. Schwarzer Rauch bedeutet, es gibt noch keinen neuen Papst. Beim weißen Rauch werden bei einer erfolgreichen Papstwahl zeitgleich die Glocken des Petersdoms geläutet. Seit 1878 findet das Konklave in der Sixtinischen Kapelle in Rom statt. Neben dieser großen Bedeutung beherbergt die Sixtinische Kappelle einige der berühmtesten Gemälde der Welt. Geschaffen wurden diese von verschiedenen Malern der Renaissance. Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Cosimo Rosselli, Biagio d’Antonio, Luca Signorelli und natürlich Michelangelo Buonarroti. Am beeindruckendsten ist mit Sicherheit das Deckengemälde. Die Deckenmalereien malte Michelangelo Buonarroti zwischen 1508 und 1512 im Auftrag von Papst Julius II. Sie wurden am 1. November 1512 enthüllt und zeigen Szenen aus der Genesis auf insgesamt 520 m² mit 115 überlebensgroßen Charakteren. Besonders der Ausschnitt ‘‘Die Erschaffung Adams’‘ ist ein weltbekanntes und oft reproduziertes Werk. Es zeigt, wie der Gottvater mit ausgestrecktem Finger Adam zum Leben erweckt. Sehr beeindruckend das Gemälde in echt zu sehen! Fotos mit Kameras und Blitz sind verboten. Ob diese mit dem Handy erlaubt sind oder nicht war uns nicht ganz klar. Ein paar Bilder konnte ich zum Glück machen, angesprochen wurde ich zum Glück nicht. Der Name der Kappelle bezieht sich auf Papst Sixtus IV., unter dem die Kapelle zwischen 1475 und 1483 erbaut wurde. Nach einiger Zeit in der gut gefüllten und wunderschönen Kapelle ging’s für uns wieder weiter. Für uns hieß es damit auch Abschied nehmen vom Vatikan. Wir kommen sicher wieder!Read more

      Birthday child.

      Today it's my daughter's birthday.
      And it is a promising day.
      Although we started with a ly-in and a easy breakfast, we were in the city of Rome around 10.00.
      And already choking hot. The plan was to go and see if we could visit the Colloseum.
      We got out of the train at the Roma Ostiense, and took a walk. Had a glimpse of the Therme di Caracalla, and the San Saba neighbourhood. At the Circus Maxima, we took the right turn to the Colloseum.
      We cancelled our visit, the heat and the thought of standing in the burning sun was not appealing.
      We skipped that dance.
      Turned around and I had a nice idea of visiting a secret.. but as we passed a nice coffee bar, we could not resist. Coffee for me, a orange juice for the lady. And of course a brownie with cream.
      It's a birthday!
      After this rest, we could feel our feet and legs. The 20km of yesterday are not worn of by the night.
      We arrived at the secret, well known to everyone.. but. It was closed. The cleaner who was working there let us in anyway. Maybe he could see we were in despair..

      It's situated at the entrance of a church, and as we were true tourists, we took a peek at it also.
      What a gems this city hides.
      We also wanted to see Isola Tiberina and so walked over Ponte Fabricio.
      As we had an appointment with the Pope's treasures at 17.00h, we walked into the direction of the Vatican city.
      But humans need food to go on. So stopped at a nice restaurant for lunch. It turned out to be spaghetti.
      We arrived at the appointment a small hour early. So we sat down on the stairs of Via de Tunis, I had a little nap, and Nika fed the pidgeons. Made a whatsapp call to Renata, and as we were showing her the neighbourhood, it was time for the Musei Vaticani.
      Maybe we did not plan this very well, as it was HUGE!.. What a rich collection of all you could want to see. It is truly a place full treasures. And all in almost perfect condition. We did not see all. We did not have time.
      And in a way.. I came for the Sixtine Chapel.
      So in a way, we ooh't and ahh't through the never ending hallways into the direction of our goal.
      Was it a disappointment? No. I think you have to see this. Once in your life. But take your time to see the other art. Maybe those are even more important or rare than the work of Michelangelo.
      Sadly in the Chapel there was a bunch of copyright policeman, so don't try to take pictures.
      Out into the field, have a rest and a coffee, we left. Tired and satisfied.
      On the end of our day, we took the time for an big tasty ice cream. As diner!
      Train, walk, shower..sleep.
      Tomorrow (today) we leave for the city of Grosseto. Half way up to Pisa.

      Сьогодні були в новій країні хехе:) Ватикан ще менший, ніж я думала. Музеї Ватикану надзвичайні. Аудіогід обіцяв, що ми їх запам'ятаємо на все життя і протягом 4-х годин ми мали можливість переконатись в його правоті. Такого щільного накопичення краси на кв.м ще не доводилось бачити. Риму це стосується також. Просто приходить момент, коли думаєш, ну все, достатньо, я не можу стільки осягнути, стільки красивого, змучуєшся навіть емоційно, бо постійно в захваті. Так, звучить, напевно, дивно, сама не думала, що так буває. Перед тим, як побачити якусь визначну пам'ятку, про яку я лиш читала чи яку бачила лиш в інтернеті і телевізорі, я страшенно хвилююсь. Ніби перед важливою зустріччю. Я думаю: ну, і яка вона буде, чого очікувати, чи виправдає сподівання. В Сикстинській капелі взагалі неймовірні відчуття. Знову ж таки, це неможливо осягнути.
      Собор Святого Петра теж вражаючий. Дуже жаль, що ми не встигли в нього потрапити. Було вже зачинено. Взагалі з робочими годинами, позначками входу-виходу тут і у Римі трохи проблематично... І нам в інформаційному пункті сказали, що ми далеко не єдині туристи, які шось прошльопали через це. Оскільки цього ж дня в нас літак, ми не встигли піти і на пагорб Джаніколо, звідки, кажуть, Нерон споглядав ним же підпалений Рим.
      Але в Рим завжди можна на вихідні прилетіти. Що ми обов'язково зробимо. Значно більше шкодуватимемо, якщо щось з бажаного не вдасться побачити в Південній Америці. Туди на вихідні не прилетиш.
      Колізей, Римський Форум - тут навіть нема що сказати, мені досі не віриться, що я це все побачила на власні очі. Але черги - нереальні. І ми дуже тішились, що купили квитки онлайн.
      Хочеться відмітити, що у Римі дуже багато фонтанчиків з питною водою і взагалі вона дуже добра. Не очікувала від міста, яке має такі проблеми зі сміттям. Пиво чомусь дуже дороге-в середньому 7-9 євро за 0.5 л. До аеропорту ми вже не встигали і взяли таксі, це було дуже весело))) Італійська манера водіння наліцо)) Це і постійно сигналити, і возмущатись як інші можуть так жахливо їздити, і сварки з іншими водіями на ходу через відкрите вікно))) Словом, все як у фільмах)) Крістоф такий: "Нам не треба нервуватись, що ми не встигаємо, він нервується за нас обох" :)

      a couple of cheeky snaps in the chapel.
      I knew from my last visit we should have gone out of the door on the right that takes you into St Peters but instead we took the route we were supposed to do, through the door on the left. It took the best part of an hour, we must have walked 2 miles and we got soaked into the bargain. The only plus point I that Dave will never know how far it would have been if we had gone through the door on the right.
